The goddamn Padres are like the little kid in the division no one likes or cares about but keep annoying you; they need a rival, but the Giants and Dodgers have each other at least. San Diego? nothing.

They're still on the hook for most of that contract.

I wonder if they can give it to him in pennies?

Or better yet, McDonald's gift certificates?

My favorite story from yesterday (via Big League Stew):

Nationals 11, Astros 10 (11 inn. — completion of suspended game)
The first game passed through different dimensions. After a rain delay of 65 days and 1,400 miles, the Nationals took all of 7 minutes to beat the Astros in game one. Joel Hanrahan(notes) picked up the victory, even though he's on the Pirates now. Nyjer Morgan(notes) scored the winning run, even though he wasn't on the Nats when the game started, in D.C., on May 5.

larrymcg421 07-10-2009 09:20 AM

I wonder if a guy in a similar situation has ever recorded a win against his own team?

Ksyrup 07-10-2009 09:37 AM

I don't know, but Joel Youngblood got a hit in two different games for two different teams on the same day in the early 80s. He got traded after a day game and was able to make it to his new team's night game.

Quote:

From the great Kevin Hines of the Elias Sports Bureau: "Like father, like son. Tony Gwynn Sr. broke up a no-hitter in the 7th inning or later five times. Most notably, he broke one up against a pitcher who was quite similar in style to Lincecum, Orel Hershiser (1985) (and it was) also leading off the 7th inning.

"Hershiser had a scoreless string during his career of 59 IP. Lincecum had one of 29 broken today."

I remember an odd fact from a baseball card or something about Tony Castillo on the Jays... I think he got a win or save against his former team when a postponed game was resumed.

TurnerONU22 07-10-2009 12:03 PM

I didn't see a mention of another 'oddity' that occurred this week involving Washington: Alan Embree picked up a victory for Colorado without throwing a pitch.

Washington Nationals vs. Colorado Rockies - Recap - July 07, 2009 - ESPN

Embree came on in relief with two outs in the 8th inning, then picked off Austin Kearns before throwing a pitch. Rockies score in the bottom of the 8th to allow Embree to pick up the victory.

Charlie Manual chooses Jayson Werth over Sandoval.

Glad you have your entire OF in the All-Star game now.

Dr. Sak 07-10-2009 01:43 PM

Good for Charlie

Ronnie Dobbs2 07-10-2009 01:45 PM

Neither deserve it over Sandoval, but especially Victorino.

Karlifornia 07-10-2009 02:06 PM

Fuck you, Charlie Manuel, you dumb shit.

Ksyrup 07-10-2009 02:21 PM

To the victors goes the spoils, right?

Who the hell cares about the All-Star Game anyway? I'm a huge baseball fan, and I'm not sure I'll even be watching.

Ronnie Dobbs2 07-10-2009 02:22 PM

Something to argue about.

This is really the only All-Star game worth watching. I care. I admit it.

BECAUSE THIS ONE MATTERS!

...or something like that

RedKingGold 07-10-2009 03:48 PM

Heh, I love the outrage.

Crapshoot 07-10-2009 04:38 PM

Charlie Manuel is a frigging ass. Is he going to select Carlos Ruiz next? Maybe Brad Lidge?

Ryan Howard on the team is a fucking joke as is; the most overrrated player in baseball (he ranks 12th amongst NL 1b in wOBA!). Perhaps he'd like to just send out the Phillies?

Don't give him any ideas.

MrDNA 07-10-2009 04:50 PM

I do wonder how many people complaining have actually looked at Jayson Werth's stats. As a Phillie fan I don't think Howard should be going (I understand it's his home town, etc.) but the other 24 Phillies are Kosher ;)

Can't say I understand this at all. If Church stays healthy, he's a pretty solid hitter. Would've been nice to add another piece to the deal since Franceour will be gone after the season.

Or you know, since Franceour is pretty fucking terrible.

MLB Rumors - MLBTradeRumors.com

If its true I'm going to have a hard time facing my friends. I may have to lay low for a couple years.

Logan 07-10-2009 05:20 PM

They announced it on ESPN. Metsblog also has it.

Baltimore Sun

Quote:

NEW YORK (AP) — The slumping New York Mets have traded outfielder Ryan Church to the Atlanta Braves for outfielder Jeff Francoeur.

The deal came Friday, with the injury-ravaged Mets trying to avoid falling farther back in the NL East race.

Church is hitting .280 with two home runs and 22 RBIs. Francoeur is hitting .250 with five homers and 35 RBIs.

Those three doubles last night were just the start of his resurgance ;)

Seriously though I'm glad Atlanta got rid of this guy and to get a respectable major leaguer back in return is amazing.

larrymcg421 07-10-2009 05:24 PM

Why would the Mets do this?

ISiddiqui 07-10-2009 05:25 PM

Crap :(

I want to hunt down and kill Minaya.

Logan 07-10-2009 05:26 PM

I know Manuel didn't like Church, but it still makes no sense. The team was too left-handed when everyone was healthy...not so much now. That's why I'm hoping a mid-range prospect was thrown in, otherwise Minaya is batshit insane.

Instead of suffering through a painful, injury filled season that just slowly deteriorates Minaya apparently thinks its best to just do the humane thing and put Mets fans out of the misery quickly.

larrymcg421 07-10-2009 05:31 PM

It's pretty bad when Frank Wrens pwns you in a trade.

Ronnie Dobbs2 07-10-2009 05:31 PM

The obvious solution here is to fire Manuel. I've heard he doesn't care much for Reyes either so maybe Omar will trade him for Alex Rios.

If Manuel didn't like Church they should have gotten rid of Manuel.

larrymcg421 07-10-2009 05:34 PM

Quick, someone pitch Kelly Johnson for Reyes to Minaya before he gets sober.

Atocep 07-10-2009 05:38 PM

I've defended Omar up until this point. He's made made mistakes, but has done a decent job.

Now, I hope he's fired at the end of the year and they bring in someone smart enough to know that there isn't a player on the Mets 40 man roster that's worth trading for Francoeur.

I'm seriously sitting here dreading any of my friends signing onto MSN tonight.

Well, let's not make Church into something he's not (I know asking you to cut the hyperbole is impossible, but whatever). This trade is shit because Francoeur is shit, not because Church is a stud.

k0ruptr 07-10-2009 05:40 PM

IMO Victorino is having a pretty good year, I think its all star worthy, juts not as much as sandoval.

I'm aware of why the trade is shit. I'm just saying they'd be a lot better off without Manuel.

miked 07-10-2009 05:58 PM

Wow, a steal for the Braves. Get a shitty guy off the team and actually get a warm body back. One that doesn't incessantly bitch too.

k0ruptr 07-10-2009 06:24 PM

The braves GM thought he was playing a baseball text sim after that trade.

I wonder how many people have looked at Pablo Sandoval's stats. The Panda was fucking robbed. Robbed, I say!

On another note, I can't believe the Braves were able to trade Francoeur for anyone remotely resembling a major leaguer. I also find it hilarious that the Royals, who were reportedly interested in Francoeur a while back, traded for someone who manages to get on base less than he does in Yuniesky Betancourt.

ISiddiqui 07-10-2009 06:43 PM

Yeah, regardless of Werth's value, Sandoval has been amazing this season.

I'm not at all convinced that the 2009 model of Church fits that description by much more than the narrowest of margins

That aside though, since someone wondered about any other pieces to the deal, the AJC says the Braves will send "some cash" to the Mets but no other players are involved.

I don't think people were that upset about the Victorino selection because it was the "fan vote". I can understand the upset over Werth being selected, but I don't really give a crap because I'm a Phillies fan. :D

RedKingGold 07-10-2009 07:36 PM

lol at the Mets trade. Of course, I've just jinxed Amaro into doing something crazier or stupider (like signing Pedro).
