BTW not that anyone cares but i am rooting for Detroit because of Earl, and i am also cheering for Earl to over come all the shit in his life,no one deserves what he has gone though.

I used to think Babcock was an arrogant assaholic but after watching the piece on hockey night in Canada with him and Earl it has changed my mind.

You have insider scoop that Crosby will be back??

The realist in me say if the Pens win tonight, they'll need Crosby back to have any shot against Washington or Philly.

And the true reason anyone should be rooting for the Pens is you'll get to have more Matt Cooke in your life next round :)

Is it just me or does it seem like Jason Pominville is always out for months at a time when he gets hurt? It seems like the guy is never healthy, especially at the start of season.

I care, bbor! If you want, I will send you my old Petr Kilma Wings jersey so you can represent!

I saw that piece on Babcock. Great stuff.

By the way, not to take sides, but the idea that it's classless for teams to pull their goalie on a delayed call late in the game is Milbury-level ludicrous.

Hm, guess I kind of did take sides there.

Bad enough the guy is clearly wrong, no need to call him Milbury-esqe

So the only good thing to come out of the Sabres losing:

My facebook post today:
"YEAH!!! So if you were wondering why I changed my profile pic to my favorite Upper Deck Sabres card it's because Upper Deck was running a contest on facebook and as it turns out... I WON!!! WOOHOO! Will post the loot when it gets here!"

YEAH!!!! There was a contest for each series and I won the Sabres drawing so I think I get all 10 cards (all patches/jersey/autographs) :D

I wouldn't put money on that.

Forgot to post it yesterday, but I was listening to the local radio pre-game 7 and some guy called in and said that the Sabres should be killing the Flyers because they beat them 9-3 in a pre-season. He was dead serious and went on about it with the radio hosts. The radio hosts said that it was the first time in his career that someone actually called in and said that a hockey team should win based on a pre-season game.

The one thing that was missing is the guy is an incredible penalty killer and a contributor on the power play. If he wasn't getting $5 million a year and in the $3-$4 million per year range, it would be easier not to be as critical on him as we are.

Galaxy 04-27-2011 09:53 PM

Good game in Boston-Montreal. Come on Habs! (Even though Boston-Philly would be a great series to watch.)

SirFozzie 04-27-2011 10:00 PM

Arrrrghghghghghghg.. Stupid penalty, combined with what LOOKED like a soccer-like oversell, you could see it coming.

I give the bruins like a 1/3 chance of winning in OT.

This Bruins team is horrible. They deserve to lose this game. Seriously...brutal.

2) San Jose vs. 3) Detroit

Kudos! You really went out on a limb on those picks Barack! Going chalk with the top three seeds in each conference and your only upsets being 5 seeds over 4 seeds when one four seed was without it's two best players and the other without it's starting goalie.

What happened in the first round was exactly what was supposed to happen and I think all 8 favourites won.

samifan24 04-27-2011 11:37 PM

Nice of Nathan Horton to bail out Patrice Bergeron there with the GWG in OT. Bruins-Flyers meet again for the 2nd year in a row. Series begins Saturday afternoon.

SirFozzie 04-27-2011 11:47 PM

The "high sticking" penalty was stupid, but it was a complete flop, a soccer-like oversell (the guy flinched like it hit him in the face, but it didn't even come close)

Someone is a sore loser.

And yes, teams ALWAYS pull their goalie on a delayed penalty. It has nothing to do with the score, whom they are playing, or the color of your grandmother's socks. Do you expect them to stop playing because they have a big lead?

nightmare fuel

britrock88 04-28-2011 02:45 AM

I watched MON/BOS while keeping up a conversation with my friend, who was pulling for the Bruins at least as hard as I was pulling for the Habs. The funniest thing about our conversation was his reaction to the Plekanec breakaway: "Gross."

Also, he said after the game that Subban really impressed him. ...In the offensive zone, maybe, but we were all watching him and Gill struggle to clear the puck on at least 2 Bruin goals, no? Relatedly, come on, Gionta/Gomez! -3? Really? You weren't playing offense _or_ defense, apparently.

Dr. Sak 04-28-2011 07:37 AM

I sat in front of a guy who had a pure hatred for everything Kris Letang did. I am not a Pens fan by any means, but I was about to turn around and strangle him. All he did was "Boo" Letang everytime he had the puck and cheer everytime he went for a line change cause he was a "worthless bum who should be traded". This guy is one of the top 10 to 15 defensemen in the league and you can't appreciate it? Wow!

Suburban Rhythm 04-28-2011 08:14 AM

Did he score last night? NO! Therefore, he stinks!!

Suburban Rhythm 04-28-2011 08:17 AM

DOLA

Anyone like Kelly Chase on 'On The Fly'? I find him really irritating.

I kind of like Mike Johnson, and Brad May was pretty good the couple times he was on.

He said last night he had a problem with Subban gesturing to the Boston crowd after his PP goal under 2:00 left (gesture as in kind of held his hand to his ear, not a Ference gesture).

"He needs to keep his emotions in check...and it got the better of him. He was on the ice for the game winner against in OT...the hockey gods didn't like what he did"

WHAT?

If they wanted idiotic commentary, just pipe in more Paul Steigerwald.

samifan24 04-28-2011 10:18 AM

Why do so many fans hate PK Subban? His flop last night is a good example:

Honolulu_Blue 04-28-2011 10:32 AM

I liked PK Subban. I think he's an exciting, dynamic player. He may have some maturity issues and what not, but I think he's a great player for the sport and I love watching him play.

While not a Penguins fan, I was very impressed how well they played all season and in the first round without Crosby and Malkin. If they can maintain that style of play and discipline when those two get back, they will be a very formidable team.

Sometimes I forget that Scott Gomez is even on the Canadiens. I have the same problem with Marian Gaborik and the Rangers. I will be watching a Rangers game and sometime in the third period I will go, "Oh yeah, that's right, they have Gaborik."

Dr. Sak's Letang "fan" reminded me of a guy who sat in front of me at Joe Louis arena back in the first round of the 1997 playoffs. It was Detroit-St. Louis, Game 5. The series was tied 2-2. The entire game the guy kept complaining about how the Wings had too many Russians and how horrible they were. He'd boo each time any of the five touched the puck. He wouldn't even stand up and cheer if a Russian scored. So irritating.

I think even Marian Gaborik sometimes forgets he's with the Rangers too. Case in point the OT winner he assisted on in Game 4.

Oh well, next year the Rangers will be a distant memory as I cheer for the Jets :)

Round 2

Caps in 6 - Tampa beat Pittsburgh when Pens couldn't score, not a problem for Caps
Bruins in 7 - toughest pick, but not sold on the 3 headed goaltender monster

Canucks in 6 - Scare in 1st round helps Vancouver
Sharks in 6 - I should know better than betting against Detroit, but Sharks hung under the radar this year compared to previous seasons.

My worthless predictions for Round 2:

Lightning in 7 - I still am not sold that the Capitals are a Cup team, and I never bet against Stevie Y.

Flyers in 6 - I don't see the Bruins being a serious Cup contender either.

Canucks in 7 - Nashville plays tough defense and their goalie is outstanding, but the Canucks have more firepower, and that will be the difference in this series

Wings in 7 - Another good series between these two teams will result in a game 7, down to the wire, win by Detroit.

bbor 04-28-2011 10:54 PM

Caps in 6
Flyers in 5
Nucks in 5
wings in 6

Crosby: Symptoms recurred during comeback try - NHL.com - News

Quote:

Penguins star Sidney Crosby is optimistic about returning fully healthy for next season, but acknowledges he recently had a setback in his recovery from a concussion.

Crosby, who didn’t play this season after Jan. 5, stopped skating with his teammates during off-day practices and morning skates midway through the Penguins’ seven-game playoff series loss to Tampa Bay because he began experiencing concussion-related symptoms.

Previously, Crosby said those included headaches that made it impossible to take part in any physical activity.

http://plus.sites.post-gazette.com/i...ght-counseling

Quote:

One of the most interesting nuggets to come out of the Penguins' Break Up Day activities today is that left winger Matt Cooke received counseling shortly after being assessed what proved to be a 17-game suspension last month.
It was done, he said, with the approval of Penguins officials.
He characterized with people with whom he spoke as "good people."
Cooke was suspended for the final 10 games of the regular season and the first round of the playoffs after delivering a nasty blow to the head of New York Rangers defenseman Ryan McDonagh.

I thought at the time he got it for going after Flippula in the scrum afterwards, but it was "drawn by Howard" supposedly.

The Heatley penalty was pretty lame early, and I would have preferred in general that the Eaves slash be let go when under ten minutes in a tied playoff game. It *was* a slash, but ehhhhh.

Anyway. Woooooooo! and Happy Birthday Benny! Go get three more.

Kaberle has actually made it worse. It's something like 7% since the trade.

Great game in Vancouver.

Wolfpack 05-01-2011 01:13 AM

This just in: Pekka Rinne is good.

For all that Luongo did to keep Vancouver tied or ahead for the first 59 minutes, Rinne pretty much one-upped him with some absurd saves in the OTs. Gonna be interesting to see how Vancouver bounces back. The way they blew Nashville off the ice in everything but score only in Game One seemed to indicate that they were truly playing without the awful weight of the Blackhawks history on them and I thought they actually had a decent chance to make a short series of it. Credit to Nashville for bringing the fight tonight and forcing a split going back home.

That's pretty much the way it has been the past two seasons. For whatever reason the Sharks seem to have their number.

With that said, this series is by no means anywhere close to over as this was the first time the Sharks played well following a win this post season.

As for the second period, the Sharks have been very good this postseason outscoring opponents 13-7 in the 2nd. Seems like they either wake up or make some coaching adjustments each game.

Pretty obvious one of the reasons the Bruins powerplay can't do shit is they don't put anyone in front of the net. You have Lucic and Horton on the ice playing like snipers at the top of the faceoff circle, absolutely bizarre. I've seen Krejci go to the net more often than those two this game, and he's nearly got a couple of goals to show for it.

Boston should be up big time in this game.

JvR is playing like a man possessed.

Great GWG there as the refs review it after the play and get the call correct on a ROCKET from Krejci that was hit so hard it caromed back out of the net.

B's win 3-2 in overtime!!

I'm actually glad for once there isn't a West Coast game. All these overtimes are wrecking my sleep habits. :D

His progress not just this year, but like the last 3 months, is ridiculous.

Not playoffs news, but there is no offseason thread yet.

You wouldn't want to be the guy who follows a legend.
You'd want to be the guy who follows the guy who follows a legend.

Paul Steigerwald is the former. He took over as the Penguins' TV play-by-play broadcaster in 2006-07, succeeding the incomparable Mike Lange.
Will Doc Emrick, the voice of network hockey, be the latter?
Rumors are flying that Steigerwald will be replaced. His contract is expiring. So is Emrick's pact with the New Jersey Devils. Emrick has a modicum of Pittsburgh roots, having taught speech and broadcasting from 1969-71 at Geneva College in Beaver Falls. He's a die-hard Pirates fan. Penguins management feels the club has become an international brand worthy of a big-name announcer.

It's coming from Mark Madden, so take with a HUGE grain of salt.

Dr. Sak 05-03-2011 09:53 AM

Doc's price tag went up just a little more after winning a Sports Emmy last night for the best play by play guy in sports.

Suburban Rhythm 05-03-2011 10:22 AM

As long as he and Colin White don't come as a package deal, I'm cool with it.

samifan24 05-03-2011 11:55 AM

I can't stand Doc Emrick's voice. I heard "Crosby sends it on to Malkin" in a high pitched whine in my head.

Suburban Rhythm 05-03-2011 02:22 PM

Hmmm, I need to rethink this.

Doc "DRRRRRRRRRRRIVE...and wide" + Kris Letang from the point = lo-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-o-ng season

Logan 05-03-2011 03:07 PM

Have you heard the phrase "sashays the puck across the ice" recently?

DaddyTorgo 05-03-2011 03:13 PM

Getting emotionally invested in these playoffs has me wanting to stop on my way home and pick up NHL11 for my PS3.

Galaxy 05-03-2011 03:48 PM

My problem with Emrick is he doesn't do play-by-play when they're actually playing. Save the commentary during the stops, not during the action. Call the action.

Pumpy Tudors 05-03-2011 06:44 PM

Stop talking shit about my boy Doc Emrick. He's my favorite play-by-play commentator of all time. I have no comment on Steigerwald, but I'll never figure out why everyone in Pittsburgh loves Mike Lange. He sounds like an old great grandfather who's about to keel over at any second. Then again, there's a lot I don't really get about Pittsburgh when it comes to sports. To me, the only thing Pittsburgh fans seem to do properly is cheer for the arena football team, but given that its record is 3-4 right now, that probably won't last much longer.

But I digress. I'd watch much more Penguins hockey if Doc was doing the play-by-play for them. Since this rumor is coming from Mark Madden, though, I won't put any stock in it. Mark Madden is a piece of shit, and I hope he chokes on a cough drop in front of his family at his own birthday party, and the only way anyone can help him is to piss down his throat.

Dr. Sak 05-03-2011 09:20 PM

Tampa Bay has won 6 in a row right now.

SackAttack 05-03-2011 09:24 PM

The Bruins and Lightning are making this Panthers fan happy.
