Coffee Warlord 05-13-2009 04:02 PM

Danny 05-13-2009 04:04 PM

3.10 Aristotle, Scientist - Pre 20th Century, Greece

He was the first scientist and pretty much everything that came after what based on his work or scientific principles.

Meh. I think there were better US choices. Kissinger, for example

I don't think so... a lot of math and science comes from the ancient Egyptians. Just saying...

ntndeacon 05-13-2009 04:09 PM

my reason for picking him was basically he stopped a war. The Russo Japanese war was stopped due to his diplomacy and earned him a Nobel Peace Prize in the midst.

not horrible. but there are a lot of good greek picks. Please remember to put in your country though. Some of our picks won;t be that obvious.

+1

I was debating between Bismarck and Kissinger.

Abe Sargent 05-13-2009 04:12 PM

I was going to take Kissinger if Marco Polo had been taken.

Lathum 05-13-2009 04:13 PM

I'm ready once Galaril goes.

God help him if he steals my pick

Lathum 05-13-2009 04:22 PM

so there's nothing worse then when you have a pick, and you are amazed it fell and there is one guy ahead of you and he takes forever.

Galaril 05-13-2009 04:23 PM

3.11 Ben Franklin, Scientist - America, Pre 20th Century

It can always be worse.
He could take it.

Abe Sargent 05-13-2009 04:23 PM

Yup, totally agree

Noop 05-13-2009 04:24 PM

I think Lathum's choice was taken.

Galaril 05-13-2009 04:25 PM

:)

Lathum 05-13-2009 04:25 PM

I like the Ben Franklin pick but I would have put him as diplomat.

I think taking Einstein not as American was a mistake. It allowed a good scientist to hit the board from America, and this is the consequence.

Agreed. I was surprised he wasn't taken as American.

Izulde 05-13-2009 04:27 PM

I thought about JPJ, but I didn't know if he actually did anything or whether it was just the one fight.

Lathum 05-13-2009 04:27 PM

I am sure you meant U.K Latham as Scotland is not a country.

Barkeep49 05-13-2009 04:29 PM

I like Franklin as a scientist, but agree with those who suggest he makes a better diplomat.

Lathum 05-13-2009 04:30 PM

I thought there was some ruling about this last night that made it Scotland

Like Karl Marx, I think he does double duty and is a good pick, especially with the American bias in the voters.

Barkeep49 05-13-2009 04:31 PM

Frankly I considered Nimitz as my American Navy presence, being 20th century and all.

Abe Sargent 05-13-2009 04:32 PM

Okay Galaril - amaze us!

Yup

Abe Sargent 05-13-2009 04:33 PM

I fear we would have 10 or 12 founding fathers on the list and there was not that much talent there, but we revere them. Luckily, we've largely stayed away. I would've shot someone for taking Washington as their army chief, for example.

Galaril 05-13-2009 04:34 PM

One minute.

Abe Sargent 05-13-2009 04:35 PM

larry - do we have a ruling on Scotland for Wallace?

Galaril 05-13-2009 04:37 PM

4.2 John Stewart Mills, England, Civil Rights Leader/Father of Utilitarianism - Pre 20th Century

Abe Sargent 05-13-2009 04:38 PM

Damn Galaril, cockblocked my pick in round 4

Galaril 05-13-2009 04:39 PM

Sorry brotha.

Danny 05-13-2009 04:39 PM

4.3 Adolph Hitler, Leader/Ruler - Germany, 20th century

Abe Sargent 05-13-2009 04:40 PM

Now see, I thought Hitler would have been an inspired Diplomat pick before Otto went.

Abe Sargent 05-13-2009 04:40 PM

I think you get good value for Hitler here.

Danny 05-13-2009 04:42 PM

Surprised he was still available. Hopefully Ghandi can keep him in check.

Lathum 05-13-2009 04:43 PM

I was thinking Smith was ruled from Scotland, I'll let Larry put him in for UK, I dont want to edit my pick

Abe Sargent 05-13-2009 04:43 PM

I'm still inwardly fuming over the Mill pick. I got cockblocked in category and nation by a pick that I think is inferior to mine. Grrr!!!

DT was just whining about it.

Galaril 05-13-2009 04:44 PM

I look forward to the vote rational on that one later;)

lordscarlet 05-13-2009 04:45 PM

Do we really think that Ben Franklin is the best American scientist of either pre 20th or 20th+?

No, but I think people will see his name and think it's a major name.

Coffee Warlord 05-13-2009 04:49 PM

There are aton of great ones and I bet the ones you are thinking of were among the others three specifically I kept going back and forth with. But, in the end I like old Ben's breadth of work as opposed to one guy who had one or two major inventions.

ntndeacon 05-13-2009 05:04 PM

4.4-Tobias Michael Carel Asser-Justice Minister-The Netherlands-20th century

He is one of the founders of the Court at The Hague

Edison?

Barkeep49 05-13-2009 05:19 PM

I think Franklin, because of his versatility is a great pick. Best scientist? Maybe, maybe not, but someone I'd want in my cabinet for the breadth he could offer.

Izulde 05-13-2009 05:26 PM

Two more to go and I'll be pissed if DT or CW takes my pick.

Don't you dare.

DaddyTorgo 05-13-2009 06:09 PM

were you thinking a scientist CW?

Coffee Warlord 05-13-2009 06:09 PM

If I was, it'd be useless, since I have Einstein. :)

Izulde 05-13-2009 06:10 PM

Am I going to have kick one or both of your tails?

DaddyTorgo 05-13-2009 06:11 PM

4.5 ISAAC NEWTON, SCIENTIST, UNITED KINGDOM, PRE-20TH CENTURY

He still ranks ahead of Einstein as the most influential scientist in human history according to surveys of scientists done over the past few years.Without him...we're nowhere.

Barkeep49 05-13-2009 06:11 PM

Seriously. The suspense is killing me, especially because I am holding off doing something until my pick comes around and sooner is better than later.

Barkeep49 05-13-2009 06:11 PM

Great choice DT.

Coffee Warlord 05-13-2009 06:13 PM

4.6 Charlemagne, Leader/Ruler, France, Pre-20th

Said to be the father of Europe, the first Holy Roman Emperor, and united a whole major part of Europe.

Izulde 05-13-2009 06:13 PM

Excellent pick, DT and one I had as a backup plan for scientist.

Izulde 05-13-2009 06:14 PM

4.7 Hammurabi - Justice Minister - Iraq - Pre-20th Century

When a nation needs to have a code of laws, who better to draw upon than the man who established the first code in human history? Some of the edicts might seem draconian to modern American minds, but that's what the other members of the Cabinet are for.

Surtt 05-13-2009 06:16 PM

I was hoping he would drop just a few more spots.

nice - i considered him as my justice minister, but i feel like he wasn't necessarily the one who like...conceived of all of them necessarily...idk - maybe i'm wrong about that though

I feel like we should have had a "thinker" category of which he'd have been perfect. Franklin would also have been strong there, as would many of the other famous philosophers/public intellecturals.

It's too shallow a category to risk it. There was only other backup I thought of just now after I made the pick and I would've scrambled outside of that. So yeah, took it while it was there. :D
