oooooohhhh!!!!
MegaMan! That guy would not only kick your ass, but he would steal your weapon!!! hell yeah |
My bad. MegaMan was picked

Agreed, it's been used that way in this draft but I honestly disagree with it. There is a world of difference between video games and computer games IMHO and two separate drafts would have been more appropriate. The games generally appeal to different audiences, have different design decisions and play differently. The line is blurring now with the more powerful consoles but overall the two are apples and oranges. This is of course, just IMHO. |

That was before he got busted though. |
I did think it was an overreaction for SkyDog to ban him permanently.
But hey, this is serious business. |
I hear he didn't accept his banning though so he'll be o.k.
|
Eh, as long as he doesn't lose any posts over it, shouldn't be a big deal.
|
If he does lose posts, we will all be...
|
sniping?
|
doomed.
|
DOOMED!
|
The Paperboy was a great pick. I had completely forgotten about him, but as soon as I saw his name, it rang a bell.
I always sucked at that game. |
Note to participants: Would anyone object if we shortened the pick deadline after round five? Maybe two or three hours? I don't see any reason why we can't finish up pretty quickly once the first half is done.
|
What? No love for "Spyro the Dragon?"
And why hasn't anybody picked that "All of your base are belong to us" guy? If I were drafting, I'd take Oda Nobunaga. |
Quote:
I think we need to finish as quickly as possible. This whole thing is just going to get worse and worse I think. :p |
Quote:
Naah, Cao Cao was the basis of far more games and could have kicked Nobunaga's butt. |
Quote:
I guess you aren't giving the respect that is deserved of a draft of video game characters... |
Quote:
No problem. I agree with Calis that this has become less fun now that people are just coming in here to poke us with sticks and laugh at us (now I know how that panda at the zoo feels). It's a shame, too, because I actually really enjoyed this over the last couple of days. The draft brought back fun memories and the like--and it was interesting to see the relative importance that people placed on characters once we got out of the first round. People mentioning picks early was annoying and pointless, but it was nothing with which I could not live. Considering that most message boards are so filled with annoying people that I can't spend more than 5 minutes there, I will accept the occasional and infrequent immaturity from this board as the price of communicating on the internet and still consider myself lucky to be here. |
Dang. Sorry guys, I thought this was a draft.
It seems it's more of a "who can remember the most cool video game characters" You should change the title if that's the true intention. |
Quote:
Wow, except for that never seem to want to mate thing I've always thought it would be pretty cool to be a panda at the zoo. You just kick it, eat and scratch yourself for others amusement. Zoo's would suck if you weren't an intrinsically lazy species but pandas? Forget about it. I didn't know that they poked them with sticks though. Depending on where they stuck them, that may explain the reluctance to mate. I'm not making fun of your main point, though I think it has been an interesting draft. Still, you must admit that some drafters kinda brought the abuse on themselves. You can't object so strongly around here and not get teased for it; especially in what is essentially a lighthearted thread. |
Quote:
You know, that's a pretty valid point. In a draft, generally all the teams get a list of who's available to draft. They don't have to try to remember who's eligible. |
Quote:
Apparently that was all it took. |
Quote:
If you assume I'm they type of dork who participates in a video game character draft, then my comments don't really seem at all disrespectful or inflammatory. Besides, Nobunaga's Ambition was a kick-ass game, and probably the best turn-based strategy game of its era. |
Quote:
You honestly think so? I think romance of the three kingdoms ( the original ) was way cooler and the only one I could actually get my friends to play on a regular basis. I think the two Genghis Khan's were better single player than Nobunaga as well. The fact that the computer would punish you for being too ambitious or too cautious was cool. |
Quote:
I think it was desnudo's poll thread that brought the sharks circling IMHO. |
Quote:
I think you are the type of dork to participate in a midget orgy. |
FWIW, I would like to finish the draft--Just pretend that the MSG crowd got a few more beers in 'em for the second half of the draft and consider the peanut gallery part of the atmosphere.
Also--I've been here for the whole thing, and I have my own views on who is mature and who is not, who has overreacted, who has not, etc (based on more than just this thread, certainly). Everyone has their own view on that. I certainly won't name names because no good comes from that. |

I've been having this discussion with a woman I work with. Just for statistical purposes mind you I am searching for a japanese albino midget whore. Yeah, she's a weird chick, just like I like them. If I find one, she's even offered to join in the fun. I'll keep you updated. BTW, googling "japanese albino midget whore" gives you 318 hits which totally blows her mind. I didn't have the heart to tell her none of them describe the person we're looking for. |
Quote:
Actually the poll was a result of watching people already being jerks to each other in this thread. It was intended to lighten the mood a bit since people were taking themselves waaay to seriously. In any case, I'm tired of the finger pointing, the anger mongering, the chest pounding, the self-importance, the downright mean spiritedness (of which I was one; guilty to AE); so this will be the last non-pick specific post I respond to in this thread. |
Quote:
I wasn't blaming you for what happened but your thread likely caused folks who hadn't read the thread to read it. These people would seem to be people who had no real interest in the subject of the drafy anyway as anyone with interest in the draft likely had already read it. Since you were making an attempt to lighten the mood, this made the whole thing seem more like a joke and things only got worse for those who took themselves too seriously. I think it was inevitable but I don't think anything was "your fault" by any means. I hope you didn't get that impression. |
I guess it's my pick huh? Sorry guys...long night last night. Here goes...
Sub-Zero Mortal Kombat The coolest (literally) character from Mortal Kombat, and I needed a fighting game representative...and then, we go with... Billy Lee Double Dragon His search for Marion was great, and spawned something like 3 sequels. What can I say...I gotta go with what I know, and old school NES games are what I know. |
Double Dragon... excellent pick. I was hoping to get both brothers with my back to back picks at the end of the round.
|
I am openly reaching on this one... but absolutely did not want to miss out on this character.
The Amazon From Nintendo's Pro-Wrestling, I select the most brutal bastard ever. ![]() ![]() ![]() |
The Amazon, WTF is that? Just kidding of course, I've never played that game.
|
Hah, I remember The Amazon. Great pick, although I imagine you could've held off on him until the last round, completely not on my radar.
Fond memories though. |
I'm gutted about Double Dragon going off the board.
|
I am in utter awe of the pick of The Amazon. Fan-friggin-tastic pick.
|
Acknowledged as an obvious reach in this round, the Amazon is still a very cool pick.
|
The second I saw the Amazon I said "oh right on" out loud. Great pick man. I use to play that game all the time. Him, starman, and the one white fella who did the backbreaker were all awesome. I actualy still own that game, and have it stashed away somewhere.
|
Quote:
very likely would have been my selection had he (billy lee) not been taken. I think at this point in the draft there are going to be very few consensus picks left... my selections will probably all seem to be out of left field. |
This is the part of the draft I've been waiting for :) I want to go for guys that I like that no one else likes/has ever heard of.
I still think there's a few guys that are more consensus than others, but still. |
I have to say, the quality of the "real" picks vs. the quality of the "suggested" picks has been no contest.
|
Quote:
Which has been higher in your opinion??? :) I've been pleasantly surprised by a lot of the picks myself. |
Great friggin pick CT - The Amazon.

You think Larry and Ms Pac Man will get together? |
I don't know. I hear Ms. Pac Man has put on alot of weight from eating those pretzels and such. I can't imagine those dots are very healthy either... Never know about Larry though.
|
my team is just trying to avoid the Donkey Kong vs. Amazon locker-room deathmatch. I don't think either plays well with others.

OK, we're seriously slowing down so I'm making the call: as of tomorrow, we go to three hour deadlines.
We're at a point in the draft where everyone is virtually assured of getting their #1 or #2 pick in the next round, so please send a list if you're not one of those types who's around all the time. I already have pre-picks from several people. If I have a pick from someone but see that they're online, I'll wait for them to pick (so if you're worried that I won't do your choice justice, don't be). |
Sounds like a plan to me.
|
I thought Ninja Gaiden was a great value pick... I kept waiting for him to go off the board. I figured the straight peice from Tetris was a lock to go in the 1st or 2nd round, so surprised its still on the board (don't feel bad about mentioning it since it was already brought up a couple times earlier).
There is one pretty big old-school "villian" that I'm surprised is on the board... in the same genre as Space Invaders. |
*Waits for SI's review of round 4*
|
Quote:
At the end, though, I bet the winner is the guy who just keeps picking the best available, even if it's someone who's been mentioned a dozen times. That Ms. Pac Man pick didn't win any accolades, but it looks pretty good now. |
Uh oh Maple Leafs, you mentioned "winner"..probably opened up the floodgates again. :p
|
I think my team is looking pretty good with the selections of Kirby and Bomberman. Both 2nd round quality IMO
|
I think that it is tough to argue with Corbes team right about now. One legend and three very solid picks in the first four rounds.
|
Yeah, Corbes and TP. I might be up there, if Megaman had fallen to me in the 1st.
|
My team has four very solid starters right now. All borderline HOF types -- Croft, Space Invader, Crash and Dirk. But I'm missing that one big superstar to get the headlines. Damn 12th pick...
|
I was torn on the Ninja Gaiden pick. There's another character in the same vein that I was considering.

I'm off for the night. ML has a couple of picks for me if it comes to that. If not, I will see you tomorrow.
|
Yeah ML. I'll PM you a couple more later.
|
I think Frogger might be the best pick of the draft so far.
|
dola-
Fox McCloud is up there in my book, too. |
Quote:
|
I think King Bowser going in the 3rd round was at least a small steal.
|
Quote:
My criteria is vague and wishy-washy. I'm not sure draft position has much to do with it -- Frogger's just one of those characters you wish you had on your team. That's what I'm trying to say, yeah. |
I LOVE the Double Dragon Pick!!! That game was awesome...spent hours w/ my neighbor playin that game!
|
I am itching to make my pick - waiting for SirFozzie
|

Good vertical leap, too. |

Can't a guy get some sleep around here? :) (Kidding.. that's one of the bad things about working 2-noon)
Pikachu! I CHOOSE YOU! (with my fifth round pick that is) :) |
Despite the fact that he is widely hated by parents worldwide, thats a very good pick. Hes been in a few games, a tv show, 5 movies and is one of the 10 most widely known characters taken in this draft. That said, he really hasnt had that large of a roll in the actual pokemon games and is not widely liked by people over 13. Still, a good pick and someone I was considering for my next pick.
|
Are you guys only using console game characters?
|
No, although the majority have come from consoles.
|
Asteroids was also the first ever video game to allow the user to imput his initials for a high score.
|
I think Pikachu is a pretty decent pick.
|
Quote:
Pikachu should not qualify then |
The game came before the anime/card game.
Qualifies just fine. |
And here's the backup:
From: http://www.raichu12.com/Articles/Timeline.html 1996 February 27 - Nintendo releases Pokémon Red and Green for Game Boy. ?? - TCG Base Set released in Japan. 1997 December - Pokemon has its first major controversy: A scene in the Pokémon TV show reportedly causes seizures in several Japanese children. Japanese TV pulls the show for several months. Whether the seizures actually happened is not known. 1998 - Pokémon Comes to America ?? - Pokémon: Mewtwo Strikes Back opens in Japan. August 27 - Pokémon debuts in the US in events held in Topeka, Kansas (renamed "Topikachu" for the event). (Check out this article about the Pokémon events in Topeka. Top quote: "If the reaction of northeast Kansas kids is any gauge, Nintendo can start counting its profits.") September 7 - Pokémon cartoon premiers on the US network The WB. September 28 - Pokémon Red and Blue released in the US. |
Quote:
I'm not going to say how to judge this one way or another, but as the resident Pokemon person, I feel I should throw out some stuff for whoever makes rules clarifications. The game debuted first in Japan and the cartoon soon followed but the game most definitely came first. However, in the US, the cartoon came slightly before the game (I guess the cartoon translation took less time or something). The other subtle distinction that should be made is that in the Pokemon games, there are generic Pikachus and the default name for them is "Pikachu". The one that stars in the cartoons and movies just happens to be one that Ash (the main character of the cartoon) called Pikachu instead of changing its name. It's just like having a dog and calling it "Dog". If that's going to be used to throw things out then the metroid pick is very similar and should be looked at but I think the statute of limitations is up on that one. Lastly, in Pokemon yellow (it was the "inbetween" game- came out *after* the first two companion games but before the next two), you do officially have the Pikachu that stars in the tv show/movies/etc. SI |
Pikachu was going to be my next pick. I think he's an absolute steal this late in the draft.
And yes, he qualifies under the rules. It was a video game before everything else. |
I am going to go off the charts here and take...
The Warrior in Gauntlet I was a huge Gauntlet fan when I was younger and this was one of the first video games I loved and it brought a multiplayer feel into the genre like I have never seen before. It was all great - until you heard - of course - "Warrior, your life force is running out!" |
Quote:
I''ll third this. It was *definitely* a video game before the (great) show came along. |
Ramzavail is on the clock.
|
I picked - look up :)
