Season 2 is not yet confirmed but they better make it because I still have a bunch of questions. The guy is either the real or fake messiah and that hasn't been established yet. Some interesting theories out there is you google for them.

The show does bring up that interesting question. If Jesus/Prophet/Messiah was to come on the earth today, would we recognize him and accept him?

Im watching it now. On episode 9. Really good show. I like how it shows the everyday peoples faults and how easy it is to succumb to temptation.

It has some slow parts, but overall, a thumbs up.

Forgot that was out. Really looking forward to it.

Is the show somewhat family friendly? Was going to recommend to my Mom but would feel weird if half the show is nude orgies.

There is some "thrusting" sex between the FBI/Shin Bet agents and there is some frontal nudity. No orgies though.

Just finished "The Witcher." I enjoyed, though I stayed confused through most of the season. The fact that the stories where in different timelines and that didn't become clear to later really annoyed me. Some people love that kind of story-telling, but generally I find it is a way to hide a weak story. I think the show would have been better without it.

I just watched the first episode and was curious about some things. So I looked up the episode recap to see if it could clewr anything up. It was ONLY there in the recap that it suggested the two primary stories were at different time periods.

So, through sheer luck, I will seemingly avoid your frustration. I would have been similarly nonplussed.

I did like the first episode. Looking forward to the rest.

Yeah I don't mind telling stories like this but they did a poor job of laying it out.

We do get this song though.

I really loved "The Witcher." I thought it was fantastic and can't wait for the second season. I was a little confused about the timeline initially, but slowly started to pick things up as the season went along. At first, I was wondering if some scenes were dream sequences or involved spirits or something, but eventually I picked up on the fact and was able to roll with it.

I thought it was kind of cool in some respects. For example, I really enjoyed Queen Calanthe and her husband in the first episode and was surprised how the first episode ended. It was cool to be able to get more of them and their story as the season went on, which made the first episode all the more interesting and impactful in retropsect.

ISiddiqui 01-08-2020 04:22 PM

I'm enjoying The Witcher myself. I just finished Episode 3, which clearly lays out that there are two separate timelines. I like that the show doesn't take itself too seriously. And the production values are just simply top notch.

Chief Rum 01-08-2020 11:23 PM

I finished The Witcher. Consider me sold. I enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next season.

Edward64 01-11-2020 11:06 PM

We got the free Disney trial and watching the Mandalorian. I am enjoying it and baby "yoda" is cute. I'm glad it expanding the universe into different areas.

All in all, I prefer The Witcher (because its not as familiar as the Mandalorian SW universe) but both are on my keep on watching list.

Dracula was a good show. It was dark but at times fun. I absolutely fell in love with Van Helsing.

Well Netflix sure did well in the Oscar noms. The Irishman got 10 nominations, Marriage Story got 6. Both were nominated for Best Picture. Klaus was nominated for Best Animated Feature.

I've seen Marriage Story and Klaus and they were both deserving. I guess I will at some point watch the Irishman, but it just seems sooo long.

We have started that twice and fallen asleep both times, I need to watch it on a Sunday afternoon.

panerd 01-13-2020 12:00 PM

I just look at it as a really good miniseries. I would have no problem binge watching like 6 episodes of Black Mirror or Homeland so I just watched like an hour a night and finished it in 3 nights. It's definitely worth watching. Might be a bit much in the movie theater but well worth it just streaming at home.

I enjoyed it. It was a little spooky how everyone looked young again.

spleen1015 01-13-2020 01:19 PM

I think the length takes a lot away from the movie. I'm rooting against it.

As I said in the movie thread, I'm all for a good long movie, but you gotta give me 3 hours worth watching.

ISiddiqui 01-13-2020 01:44 PM

Yeah, I would argue that TV series and movies are different animals, and if you are marketing a 3+ hour story as a movie, I'll try to watch it all at once because that's the medium you are presenting it as.

Generally a 3 hour miniseries will structure things so that each part of the miniseries functions as an episode itself. Splitting a 3 hour movie in thirds or in half tends to not work as well.

Yeah but this one is like Goodfellas and Casino where there are obvious breaks in time so if you really wanted to you could cut it into miniseries by decade. I get what you are saying about movie vs series I was just saying if the length is the only thing stopping you from watching it than I would because it was very entertaining. If there are other reasons than I get it, I just had no problem watching an hour or so and calling it a night to pick up at a later time.

Groundhog 01-13-2020 03:32 PM

I'm 16 years late, but finally got around to watching Deadwood. Watched Seasons 1 and 2 over the Christmas break and looking forward to starting the 3rd season on the weekend.

How was the movie? Did it provide a nice conclusion?

Carman Bulldog 01-13-2020 06:38 PM

I found that The Irishman moved along at a nice pace and didn't seem to drag at all. It definitely didn't feel like three-and-a-half hours. Really, it's not much longer than Godfather: Part II (329 minutes vs 322 minutes).

It's just a great story. The biggest thing for me with the de-aging was their movements looked strange. Sure, the guy looks 40 years old but he's moving around like an 80-year-old type deal.

spleen1015 01-13-2020 07:52 PM

Godfather: Part II is 10 times the movie the Irishman is. :D

I honestly did not notice but now that you mention it ...

stevew 01-14-2020 11:44 PM

I thought the Irishman was solid but all of the ground has been covered before. Literally just watch Goodfellas again. Everything this movie did, Goodfellas did better. Also don’t quite understand why they de-aged everyone and then jumped ahead to “oh hai I’m Anna Paquin”. She’s like 35 years old or something. Like this movie was Forrest Goodfellump or something.

So I’d still give it like 7/10 or something and def think it’s worth watching. If only so that Netflix makes more things like this.

I agree with this. I found it to be... okay... but there were just too many times that I thought "oh this is the goodfellas playbook" instead of enjoying or appreciating what was happening in this film. Its a Scorsese movie with DeNiro and Pesci so that's not a big surprise, but this one just didn't really land for me.

stevew 01-15-2020 12:13 PM

Like there’s a pretty solid chance I will watch Goodfellas at least 20 more times before I die. But I can guarantee I’ll never watch the Irishman again.

I was watching a bit of that too, what a story (and yet I apparently managed to forget most of it in the time since then).

thesloppy 01-17-2020 07:16 PM

I was watching the Witcher recently, not particularly paying too much attention to the episode order, and they FINALLY reached a point of confluence for the two main characters and I was like "Alright, now this story might actually go som-"SEASON OVER

Atocep 01-20-2020 04:15 PM

I finished The Witcher last night and I thought it was a solid start. I wish they had been more upfront with the different timelines thing as it confused the hell out of my wife. The challenge the writers faced in telling Yennifer's origin story and tying her to Geralt is the different time periods. When the 3rd Witcher game begins, IIRC, Yennifer is roughly 100 years old and Geralt is in his 60s.

I read some interviews with the showrunner and I'm optimistic about where it's headed. She acknowledged the issues with season 1 and explained that the primary goal of season 1 was to get the backstory in and introduce the characters before diving too deep into the plot. With the amount of detail in the Witcher universe I think that approach makes sense.

Jumping into this blind has be daunting though. The first couple of episodes where spent with me pausing every few minutes to explain little things they don't have the time to stop and explain or they wait to explain later on. Why does a Witcher carry 2 swords? Why are his eyes black and you can see the veins in his face sometimes? What's the deal with Nilfgaard? What's the law of surprise? What's the deal with Ciri's magic?

Overall what stood out to me was the combat scenes with Geralt are fantastically done and they did a solid job of capturing the tone of the world.

DirkGildun 01-20-2020 06:22 PM

Having read people's comments and confusion about the Witcher TV series, I started watching it over the last couple of days (1st 3 episodes).

Now I understand what the problem is -- if you know nothing about the Witcher universe going in or your only exposure has been the PC games, you have every reason to be confused.

The Netflix series is based on the original Sapkowski books. The 1st 2-3 books contain short stories, and they bounce all over the place as far as the Geralt timeline is concerned. The rest of the books form a continous series in the timeline (although there are some flashbacks and flashforwards that can cause issues with comprehension, especially when the focus changes from one main character to another).

The timeline of the 3 Witcher PC games takes place after the book series concludes.

I liked how they did the Striga in Episode 3. That was a very important story in the early books. The Striga/Princess also appears in the 1st and 2nd PC games.

I really liked the different timelines in Witcher. Reminded me of S1 of Westworld a little bit. It was cool seeing the hints dropped of which timeline the story was in.

Yeah, I agree. I really enjoyed it, although the backstory of the games and knowing enough about the books really helps.

As for the multiple timeline bit, I don't remember it being really relevant until around midseason, by which point surely when you've seen a young Calanthe vs the one you saw in the first episode, and you can figure out what is going on?

This, especially re: the tone, was pretty much the takeaway with me and the kid here in the batcave tonight as we squeezed in ep. 1 before he heads back to school. It looks and feels and even sounds right.

I'm not sure about the way they chose to approach the telling of S1, a more straightforward timeline would certainly be less of a challenge for viewers (especially those coming from zero knowledge) but there's enough here to give it a chance and see how that works out.

Honolulu_Blue 01-21-2020 09:45 AM

I understand the timelines were confusing. I was confused a few times and thought certain scenes with characters who were already dead or much older when we saw them first were just dreams or had ghosts in them, but I eventually caught on.

To me, it really captured how I felt playing Witcher 2 & 3. I had a blast playing them, loved the world and everything, but only understood about 75% or so of what was ever happening at any moment.

It's on my watchlist.

Also, Center Stage recently hit Netflix. One of my favorite movies (I think I mentioned it in the thread about critically panned films that we love). Quite a few of my friends are also fans. I had a mild crush on Amanda Schull for a considerable while because of this one.

So we finished Deadwood season 3 and the movie last night.

It's weird, going straight from the finale of Season 3 to the movie I imagine negated a lot of the disappointment. I think the movie did a good job of providing some closure to season 3, without spending much time on exactly what had gone on in the 10 years between the two, and leaving open the possibility of another film. The first 10/15 mins I was worried the whole thing was going to be one big long fan service event, but once the intro was done it was just like a 2 hour episode of Deadwood. It was real bittersweet, and it's a damn shame that a couple of the actors died before the movie came about - Powers Booth the big one, but Richardson (Ralph Richeson) also somehow became one of my favourites. Also a shame that a couple of guys weren't in the film (Titus Welliver especially).

All in all, among the best TV series I've seen. If I'd watched the show when it was released, I'd have been furious for the last 15 years. :D

ISiddiqui 01-27-2020 04:40 PM

Probably be even more furious when you realize one of the reasons Deadwood ended is because the creator wanted to do John From Cincinnati.

Can't say I'd heard of it, but reading the one-line summary makes that show sound like just about the least interesting concept for a show I can think of.

I really enjoyed the Witcher and echo this as well. It kept me on my toes and added a level of anticipation.

I just saw that Ottoman was added. This also looks right down my alley - has anyone seen it yet?

Finished watching Altered Carbon s1. Great series, fantastical concepts, but somewhat rushed in the last episode to conclude the season. Looking forward to s2.
