Even later, but really happy to hear the great news.

CT Scan tomorrow with follow up reading on Tuesday... |
October 30, 2018
Blood work as great, even my platelet count was up, and the scan looked good. However, the doctor was a bit irritated, but to explain I need to provide some background. Our company's enrollment for benefits took place on October 1, and as part of that change, I can no longer use a hospital based imaging center without paying an additional $500 deductible that in no way applies toward my overall deductible. In other words, I'm now forced to use a free standing imaging center. So I did...unfortunately, the imaging center still hasn't provided my doctor a copy of their report and the scan that was provided to my doctor only showed the top half of my abdomen (though the order was for lungs and abdomen). Hence the irritation and rightfully so. I'm going to have to have a conversation with the imaging center especially sense I'm going to be using them a bunch moving forward. |
Great news!
|
Glad to hear that the health report is good. Sorry to hear that seemingly absurd red tape is adding to your stress level.
|
Awesome. Hopefully the imaging place sorts out the rest of the images soon as well.
|
Glad to hear the good news Breeze!
|
Thanks again guys...
|
Good to hear Breeze!
|
Keep the fight strong, Breeze. I know quite well living MRI and CT scan result to result and the coping mechanisms needed to handle being normal in between them and not letting them overtake your life. I admire your courage during this time.

It's scan time again. In fact, I was supposed to have my MRI today, but unfortunately, I can't. I'm not sure if I outlined my new company insurance in this thread, but basically it stated that I had to go to a 3rd party imaging center for my scans or pay what is basically a $500 penalty (as that money doesn't pay for the scan or go towards my deductible). So I scheduled my MRI at a stand alone location, but I found out yesterday that I have to have a special MRI, one that is tied to the scans that were done for my Gamma Knife surgeries. Which means, my scans have to be done at the hospital where the surgery took place - so that just bumped my total out of pocket expense for medical by $2000 this year. I don't have a new time for the MRI yet, but the CT scan is tomorrow... |
Ugh. Sorry to hear about the added expense.

I have received the results of both the CT and MRI and things are really good. The CT showed no changes from the scan 3 months ago, and the MRI showed no activity at all, meaning all the treated spots are now gone and no new lesions have formed. The MRI was as good as I could have hoped for, and the doctor said he won't need a follow up scan for 6 months (which is a huge relief based on the post above about the additional cost for MRIs). Next scan will be the CT in the middle of April. |
Fantastic!

Today was supposed to be my CT scan, but when I went in to the imaging center to get the procedure done, I was told the insurance company refused the pre-authorization. The medical records clerk brought me back and we got on the phone with the insurance company to try and get the issue resolved. During the discussion the company approved my abdomen scan with contrast, but ultimately they continued to refuse my chest scan. They said they needed additional clinical information before they would approve it. I guess stage 4 lung cancer isn't sufficient. If this wasn't so frustrating it would be down right laughable. (And, given that it isn't inconvenient to you the reader, feel free to laugh - because it is just so absurd). |
Insurance companies suck. Sorry to see this.
|
Idiotic bastards. Sorry Breeze.
|
Scan has been rescheduled for Thursday. The assumption is the insurance company will have time to review the case before then and approve the procedure.
|
Just the kind of thing that makes you want to reach into the phone and rip someone's throat out.
|
Thursday was a bust...the pre-cert wasn't approved Wednesday night, so I called the insurance company to try and determine if it was going to get approved. I was on the phone with them for 3 hours and all I got was basically "it's still pending". They did admit there was some information missing and that without it I probably would not get approved. The missing information was the Dr. notes from my visit within 60 days of the CT Scan, which is a problem considering I get a scan every 3 months...so there is no doctor visit within 60 days. This really ticked me off, but ultimately I got no where.
Then on Thursday morning, I get a call from the imaging center - "Your cert has been approved, we are ready to do your scan." - Are you freaking kidding me!!!! I hadn't taken the pre-meds to counteract my allergic reaction to the contrast - so we moved the scan to Friday. I also had to move my follow up from Tuesday to the 23rd. |
Quote:
And at this point I'm thinking "are you SURE it's been approved?" (to the center I mean, not you you). God bless ya Breeze, and I mean that literally. |

CT follow up tomorrow. Praying for continued good news. |
Wishing you all the best my friend, continued prayers

Scans continue to show no changes. The doctors are extremely pleased with the results and they told me to just keep doing what I've been doing and they would see me in 3 months. I did have to report to being abnormally tired during this 3 month stretch, but I've also been walking twice a day for around 30 minutes each time for exercise. The doctor was pleased by the later and not surprised by the former. Fatigue is a common side affect of the medication anyway, and she believes the walking is increasing the symptom, but she urged me to continue to walk as it is extremely beneficial for my overall health. So I'm doing good and I've got until mid June before I have to worry about it again. |
Good report, although the fatigue sucks. You're doing great!

This is great news man! Woohoo!

July 10, 2019
We are coming up on scan time again...CT on Friday, MRI on Tuesday. Also, during our vacation at the end of June, I decided (like an idiot) to try and waterski. And not just get up and get pulled around a bit, I tried to slalom like I used to YEARS AGO. It didn't take long for the folly of that thought to impact me, before I was even up I tore a muscle in my hamstring and another in my oblique (right under my rib cage). Given both of these issues just involve rest to let them heal, I'm going to be dealing with this stupidity for a while. |
July 25, 2019
Both the CT scan and the MRI were clean. Both doctors were very pleased. The Radiation Oncologist thought about extending my MRI to every 8 months, but ultimately left it at 6. He basically said that with these newly identified cancers (like my ALK) they have developed strategies for treatment, but they haven't yet developed procedures for follow up and he's unsure of what it prudent. Given that, other than the stress of waiting for results, the scans are more inconvenience than anything else, I don't really mind. In fact, I'd rather know if a problem occurs sooner than later so treatment adjustments can be made as quickly as possible. Next CT scans are in October. |
Glad to see that everything is still looking good.
|
Sounds like good news. Glad to hear it!
|
More woot.
|
Thanks for the update and congrats on the good report!
|
So once again I'm running into problems getting my medication refilled. We just switched insurance providers again and at the same time my year long prescription expired. So the Dr is trying to submit the new pre-authorization, but the new company doesn't like it for some reason and the shipping of the medicine has been delayed. The problem is - I'm down to about 3 days of pills!
Ugh...I hate it when this crap happens. |
Ugh. I hope they get this ironed out quickly.
|

Supposedly it is resolved. We'll see if the pills are waiting for me, when I get home. |
My pills arrived yesterday...Whew!
Now I can relax... |
Glad to hear it!

October 1, 2019
CT again on Friday. Originally my follow up was for Tuesday (10/8), but the Dr is out of town, so it's been rescheduled for 10/22... Long time to wait for results  |
October 24, 2019
Got the CT results, and things remain unchanged. I'll continue with my current treatments and my next round of scans will be in mid-January. |
I missed this the first time around. Happy you get to enjoy the holidays without the stress of this for now. Good news for now.
|
January 2, 2020
At the end of the year I got my CT and MRI scans done in order to take advantage of having met my maximum out of pocket expense. Unfortunately, this means I'll have a few weeks to wait on the result... |
January 13, 2020
Have my CT follow up tomorrow. Saying my prayers the meds are still working. |
Praying for you!
|
In my thoughts buddy, all the best
|
January 14, 2020
The CT and Blood Work is great. No changes, so one more hurdle to clear on Friday when I get the MRI results. |
good update
|
January 21, 2020
MRI was also good, so I move on for another 3 months before my next CT Scan. The radiology oncologist admitted to me that at this point I'm serving as a benchmark for future patients. That these new treatments are pushing patients into uncharted territory and that his staff will be monitoring me closely to help them understand how to treat future patients. |
Great news!

My latest scan, other than being a pain to coordinate with the Covid situation and dealing with the usual pain in the ass insurance issues, was uneventful. My meeting with the doctor was over the phone, so no blood tests, but the scans showed no change. And we start another 3 month cycle...
|
SWEET UPDATE!
|
:)
|
Solid.
|
July 8, 2020
The most recent rounds of scans are now complete. I got the MRI last week and the CT yesterday. It was a little odd with Covid measures in place, but no big deal. I will get my first results on Friday, and the other on Tuesday. |
July 14, 2020
I have all my reports back. The MRI report is down to less than a page in length, and it states there have been no changes. The Dr was extremely pleased and we're scheduled to do it again in 6 months. The CT was also good, the Dr stated the lungs looked normal so does the liver and lymph nodes. Said to keep up the good work, and we'll schedule the next scan for October. So, I'm good for another 3 months... |
Outstanding news, very happy to hear it.
|
Fuck yeah, you go boy
|
Good news!
|
That is incredible news man.

Awesome!

As always guys, thanks for the support. It is greatly appreciated.
|
Sorry for my lateness, but fantastic news :)

October 9, 2020
3 months is up, scan day again today. Just the CT this time around, but unfortunately, I have to go all the way down to the main campus at Emory. That's about an hour each way, without traffic (which shouldn't be terrible), whereas I usually go to a local facility which is less than 15 minutes away. The worst part about the CT is - I'm allergic to the contrast they use, so I have to take a bunch of steroids and Benadryl before and I feel like crap for days. |
October 13, 2020
The reports for both my chest and abdomen state "No metastatic disease" so I'm good for another 3 months...which gets me through the holidays. |
On my way to get scanned on Friday (9th), when I pulled into the hospital, there was a big group gathered in front of the children's wing. I turned to see what was going on and there was a boy, couldn't have been more than 8 ringing his cancer free bell...it was a pretty awesome sight....
|
Great news in both instances!
|
Fantastic news, glad to hear it puts you past the holidays too.

I only just saw this and, holy crap, my wife just dealt with that. Sounds like the same cocktail to counter the allergy they gave her (for the first time) and sonofabitch, it worked (to my surprise if I'm being honest). Her previous scan some months back where the allergy was discovered scared the crap outta her & Will both, as he had done the driving that day and she reacted while they were eating dinner afterwards. Definitely not prepared for the severe ... shaking? tremors? whatever the right word. It's a nasty allergy to have for sure. Stoked about your good report, that's the stuff I love to hear. |
Really happy to hear your good reports Breeze. Great news!
|
Got trashed by the undefeated rookie league leader who posted a 10(4) yesterday.
Sitting third going into day 9 at 5-3-0 despite my 17/40 hit rate being tied for fifth in the league. Assured of a finish between second and fourth depending on results today, and placement in a B, C, or D league depending on results tomorrow. Suppose I'm playing good defense (yesterday aside) or just getting lucky matchups. Korme, at 4-2-2 and 18/40 hit rate, is in the same spot in his D league, with the same potential season outcomes. |

Another round of scans goes well! No changes to report, so reset the clock for 3 more months. The only item that was different was the insurance company balked at the scan of not only the pelvis but the abdomen. We are used to the pelvis being blocked, but the abdomen caught us off guard, and the Dr was out of the office so he couldn't do the peer to peer talk. So just got the chest scanned this time around. |
I can't believe that I missed this last week. Nothing is taken for granted, and another three months to go ahead is great news man. Really good to hear.

And while I read this when posted, I didn't comment at the time but I wanted to specifically thank you for sharing details like this. Because you have, my household is better prepared for what we're going to inevitably bump into. I've literally talked about the approved/not approved/then approved shuffle with my wife twice in the past week, between your stories and a couple of other people with similar, we'll still be frustrated I'm sure but we won't feel blindsided when it happens either. And that helps. |
Glad to reset for another 3 months. Keep bringing us good news!

I go in tomorrow to get the results from my latest scan. I'm much more concerned for this one than I've been in quite a while. Basically, the concerns started way back in January when the wife was exposed to Covid, so I moved in with my brother. In an effort to try and bolster my immune system, I did like so many others - I started taking vitamins and drinking orange juice. After drinking oj for 8 to 10 days, often times multiple times a day, I got concerned. One of the things I have to stay away from is blood oranges because like grapefruit they impact the effectiveness of my medications. I felt like I was probably ok, because oj is typically made from valencia oranges, but when I looked it up - sure enough - blood oranges were listed in the ingredients. Follow that with some significant discomfort in my lower left rib cage, and my anxiety is pretty high. I have had the twinges in the rib cage before, but it's been much more common and more pronounced. I'm hoping it is just scar tissue building or tearing that I'm feeling. Regardless, I'm saying my prayers heading into the visit tomorrow. |
Good luck tomorrow, Breeze. I will pray for a good result tonight.
|
Been awhile since I've been on this site, but thrilled to see updates over the past year. Good luck with the tests tomorrow, Breeze!
In barely semi-related news, my extended family has shared rave reviews about their care at Emory compared to other facilities in the area. Some COVID, some non-COVID care, but across the board they have seen better outcomes at Emory than other facilities. |
Good luck!

Scans and blood work continue to be good. The PA was concerned about the pain around the bottom rib, but she poked, prodded, and listened and seems satisfied that everything was ok. The scan showed nothing obviously, so she thinks either the plural lining of the lung is irritated or the bundle of nerves that runs under that rib could be as well. My guess at this point is the scar tissue at the lower part of the lung is rubbing against the nerves or the rib cage and that's the problem. The PA was going to have the doctor take a closer look when he returns from Spring Break with his family. |
Sounds good so far!
|
That's what I'm talking 'bout.
Outfuckingstanding. |
So good to hear that things continue to be great for you Breeze.
|
July 6, 2012
The next round of scans start today with my MRI, and finish with my CT on Wednesday (7/8). I have my MRI follow up tomorrow and my CT follow up on the 13th. Some of my concerns from my last CT scans are still in place for my MRI, because this is my first brain check since I mistakenly drank orange juice for a week. Will let you know what I find out. |
I hope you get good results.
|
Agreed. Let's go!
|
July 13, 2021
Just got back from my follow up visit, and I was told that all my scans (CT and MRI) and blood work look fantastic! I was told to keep "trucking" (PAs words not mine) with the same treatment. |
Most very excellent news.
|
Sounds great!
|
Thanks guys!

October 12, 2021
Most recent CT scan continues to show no areas of concern, so I restart my clock and I get to relax through the holiday season. |
