It's interesting.. I think Foxy Lady would be my 3rd or 4th choice for Hendrix songs, even when thinking about the masses... |
Quote:
Fans are pulling of their jerseys and throwing them in the garbage. Mel Kiper is ripping the pick. This is Jets circa 1990. |
Quote:
Yeah, I'm pretty speechless. Nothing against Hendrix, mind you. |
Quote:
you know Tom Brady was a sixth round pick |
Quote:
Honestly, I think its the best cover song ever done. I was tempted to go with in the Round 2, but I didn't think the Stones would last. |
So no skipping if it's outside of work hours? Or should I send in a list if I go to happy hour?
|
Quote:
I was shocked no one picked it first round. |
Quote:
Dude, you shouldn't send a list. You can scan the bars jukebox for good songs. |
Quote:
yeah, and you're going to need to pull a few miracles out of your ass to make up for this slip-up. |
Quote:
But I'd have to remember them by the time I stumble home. :) |
The heckling fans is the best part of the process :D
|
Yep, I had Watchtower as my #1 cover, but I suppose it's all about priorities.
Time for the epic. And sorry, but I'm not a believer in Freebird. Just don't think it's that great of a song. When it comes to what I'd consider to be truly epic, I'm thinking about indians scattered on dawn's highway bleeding, heartache and the loss of god...and the kind of guitar work that is closer to an aural painting than electricity and metal. Cabaret, snakes and fire, tripped-out guitarwork, distance and cacaphony, spoken word poetry -- and probably the most famous use of the f-bomb in rock music, though you'd pretty much have to hear them live or on a bootleg to find out just what Mr. Mojo Risin' wanted to do to his mother, though it's clear on any version. You got it: Classic - 1.3 - Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan Epic - 3.3 - The End - The Doors Arena - Trendsetter - 2.8 - Respect - Aretha Franklin Love Song - One-Hit Wonder - Party - Crossover - Cover - Anti-Establishment - |
Quote:
bah. How can you cay that song isn't a classic. I am totaly aproaching this from a mass appeal and you can't tell me there isn't a more popular Hendrix song. |
Quote:
|
Quote:
All Along the Watchtower, Purple Haze, Hey Joe, Voodoo Child to name a few. Foxey Lady's way down IMO. Either way, we'll see. :D |
Butter is up. He sent an original list of three, then a revised version. The revised version has been picked dry, but he has one song left from his original. I'm going to hold off picking for him for now and see if he shows up.
Send your picks (if you won't be around). |
Quote:
You go out on the street and ask the average person to name a Hendrix song 65% will say Foxy Lady :) |
if you go Hendrix, "Purple Haze" is the slam-dunk pick. Shit, i'd even take "Manic Depression" before "Foxy Lady".
The fans are pissed. You took a Division II QB when the top prospect was still on the board. |
The End is so bloated and over-indulgent, that it makes Bohemian Rhapsody look like a Ramones tune. I think it's crass and horrible.
I thumb my nose at your selection. |
Quote:
I couldn't have put it any better. Shit pick. The draft is getting easier for some guys because of the few that are falling down on the job. |
nomyths list looking great in preseason!
|
What a waste of the doors pick.
|
Quote:
Yeah, if 65 of the 100 are you. |
Quote:
then it would be more like 90 |
Quote:
|
Quote:
LOL, you have a point there. |
Quote:
When I think of an epic, I want a tour-de-force, not a tour-de-drunken shirtless greaseball yelling incoherently like a hobo. |
Quote:
Yep...goodness knows it was nice to see the audience approve of a category choice, for once. :) |
Quote:
I agree, but Light My Fire was a better epic song. |
I'd just like to say that the NFL Draft would be 100 times better if after every pick, the other GMs rushed to the ESPN booth to say "Wow, that guy sucks!".
|
ROFL
|
vtbub and lordscarlett, will you be around to make a pick this evening?
|
Quote:
I'd watch it. Can you imagine if you had the other's GM snickering every time Matt Millen goes to make a pick, with the "pick a WR, save yourself the trouble!"comments? This seems like something Simmons would like. |
Quote:
I should be. |
Quote:
If not, I will send in a list and/or designate a backup picker. |
OK, let's give Butter a little while to check in.
|
Quote:
Jimi's Woodstock rendition of the anthem should've fit in somewhere. |
Sent a few picks to Maple Leafs, but I'll be checking in tonight...
|
For a summary:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?k...IZ_tG0Np9qK7QQ Maple Leafs, if you want to keep up with this I can send you an invite to edit it. |
I like the Freebird pick. I would've gone differently with Hendrix too.
The NFL Draft should have hecklers like this too, I agree. |
I'm here, gimme a second.
|
Classic -
Epic - Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen, 1.4 Arena - Rock and Roll (Part Two) - Gary Glitter, 3.4 Trendsetter - Love Song - One-Hit Wonder - Party - Crossover - Cover - Anti-Establishment - Anarchy in the UK - Sex Pistols, 2.7 I'm thinking of Arena as more like a sporting event, and nothing gets the crowd going like this (perhaps overplayed) classic. I know I can't resist the fist pump and the "HEY!" every time I hear it. |
I can't believe the last few pics.
Subby, if you manage to pick a Foreigner or Journey song next I will have to vote for you just completely based on the music played at the local dive bar I went to in college. |
Gary Glitter? Interesting. It wasn't on my radar as a pick in the entire draft. :D
|
OK, this one is a bit of a reach in the third round, I know that. But the more I think of it, the more I suspect that the "crossover" category is going to be a bitch. You have Walk This Way (picked), Bring Tha Noize (ineligible), and not much else. How many good rock/rap hybrids are there? I can see a run on Limp Bizkit wannabes. Shudder.
Just a tough category. Who came up with these anyways? Put some thought into next time, please. So ... I'm going with one of the first artists to ever have success in multiple genres: pop and country. Yeah, country is pop now, but back in the day they were completely different and you did one or the other. But this guy had mainstream pop success despite being a country legend. So I'll pick him a little ahead of the curve so that I don't need to spend a late pick on Jay-Z/Linkin Park. Classic - Epic - Arena - 1.7 - Welcome to the Jungle - Guns N' Roses Trendsetter - 2.4 - Heartbreak Hotel - Elvis Presley Love Song - One-Hit Wonder - Party - Crossover - 3.5 - Ring of Fire - Johnny Cash Cover - Anti-Establishment - Technically Walk the Line was his first major crossover hit, and Boy Named Sue was bigger hit. But I like this song better so go piss up a rope, Mr. Negative. |
I was waiting for some one to take Johnny Cash's Hurt as a cover.
|
Quote:
Yeah same. It's pretty well known and liked. |
Quote:
There goes my cover song. This is the line of thought I was in at first for "crossover" until I got the clarification. In my mind this crosses genres as far as charts go, but it's still the same style he always did -- it just began to appeal to a broader audience. Having said that, I don't know where else you go in this category. I will have to think of something other than "Hurt" for my cover song gold. And, for anyone that wants to argue, "Ring of Fire" is an excellent choice for Cash. I considered it for Love Song. :) |
Quote:
Quote:
See above. :) I didn't expect Cash to get picked up for crossover and thought I could sleep on him a few more rounds. |
Holy shit. I'm sorry I didn't realize that it would go this quickly. I don't have access to FOFC at work and didn't get any emails, sorry.
I gotta catch up even though I did see the crap picked Satidfaction, which coincidently, was my 4th choice after the 3 I PMed in! Nice work. |
Also, as per the Bucc Rule, please change Satisfaction to "Classic". Thanks.
|
Yep, Hurt was on the cover list as well. And I can't get any slack for the friggin' End. :p
|
What draft position are we at? I got a great pick chosen.
|
Quote:
Nothing personal :) |
Quote:
I though it was a great pick. It got people to stop ripping on my pick. |
Yes, one of the reasons I wanted to take Cash was so I could screw over at least half the other players who all thought they'd get Hurt in the late rounds as their cover.
Boo-yah! |
Quote:
3.6 for ntndeacon. You're up next at 3.9. |
Quote:
There are plenty of other good covers, and I'm already good on crossover. :) |
I have a pick for ntndeacon but will give him some time since he was around quite a bit today.
After that, vtbub is on deck. |
At the end of round 3 can we have a quick pause to review and see who is the shittiest so far :)
|
If I had read the rules more carefully, I would have not picked PE in 1.9 knowing they would not go off the board. Satisfaction would have been my 1.9 pick.
|
in the history of the 8 million drafts my husband (subby) has ever done, this is the ONLY one I've ever been excited about - that being said, make your picks faster!
|
Quote:
Er. Public Enemy is off the board, aren't they? |
Quote:
What I meant was that I don't think PE would have gone off in the first two rounds. |
Quote:
Got it. :) Good thing you got "Satisfaction." |
ok I am here. give me a second :D
|
Quote:
I like this pick, and I'm not even a Doors fan. After a weak 1st round pick, NoMyths is back in contention. |
This song has been almost been drafted already, and I can't let it slip lower.
Classic - Epic - 2.5 - Another Brick in the Wall — Pink Floyd Arena - Trendsetter - 1.6 - Good Vibrations - Beach Boys Love Song - One-Hit Wonder - Party - Crossover - Cover - Anti-Establishment -3.6-London Calling--The Clash |
Quote:
Is this a joke? |
Quote:
Shhh. |
vtbub, you're up!
|
Quote:
Thank you. I think you win that particular category. :D |
Epic- Layla- Derrick and the Dominoes 3.7
|
Quote:
Esp. if you don't care for black people. :) |
Quote:
Nice pick. So is Clapton solo still in play? |
The same 2 artists I couldn't believe were still on the board however many hours ago are STILL ON THE BOARD!!!!
|
Quote:
Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. As in STFU. :) |
Quote:
Heh - I'm actually listening to Fuck The Police right now. :D |
Quote:
THA |
Quote:
Truthfully, I know the 2 and it has shocked me. I am guaranteed to get one. |
First, I'm guessing that st. cronin's artists are going to last at least past this pick.
This pick is by an artist that defines "anti-establishment." My gut was to go with someone from the genre that defines it, and probably my favorite genre, punk. However, there are so many good options that I wanted to go a different route. Rap has turned out to be very similar in this vein. A lot of ant-establishment songs in that genre. So with that, I will take "Killing in the Name" by Rage Against the Machine. How can you get more anti-establishment than "Fuck you I won't do what you tell me!" Classic - Epic - Arena - Trendsetter - 2.3 - "Rapper's Delight", The Sugarhill Gang Love Song - One-Hit Wonder - Party - Crossover - 1.8 - "Walk This Way", Run-D.M.C. feat. Aerosmith Cover - Anti-Establishment - 3.8 - "Killing in the Name", Rage Against the Machine |
I'm looking to trade with Oilers. I'll see if he's around...
|
Quote:
Hm. I suppose I can see the logic, but I think I might take the risk of Oilers not grabbing my 4.2 pick. |
I know, I don't see him so I'll pick and hopefully he's nothing of the other.
Classic - Epic - Arena - Born in the U.S.A.- Bruce Springsteen Trendsetter - Love Song - One-Hit Wonder - Party - Crossover - Cover - Anti-Establishment - |
Quote:
Just curious, do you guys think this would work as an anti-establishment pick? Do people realize that or would enough people be confused because they think it's a patriotic song? |
Quote:
Neither, you would have to have heard it live in the 1980s to know that no one cared what it was about - just a very loud arena rocker. |
Quote:
Its funny, I found this on a list of the 50 most conservative songs, and I wanted to laugh. Of course, the same list had The Clash on it, so it shows what they know. :D |
Quote:
It probably belongs in the Miracle on Ice thread along with the US winning gold by beating the Soviets and the Mets winning the WS after the ball went through Buckner's legs. |
Subby is completely hosing everyone else, picking up a top ten pick in round three. He has to be the early favorite to take down the title.
|
I'm back so I can make my picks at 3.10 and 4.1
|
Quote:
I believe that's where we are. :) |
Quote:
Shit! ooops...ok one sec. ;) |
Classic - 1.10 Hotel California - The Eagles
Epic - 2.1 American Pie - Don McLean Arena - Trendsetter - Love Song - One-Hit Wonder - 3.10 Macarena - Los Del Rio Party - Crossover - Cover - Anti-Establishment - 4.1 We're Not Gonna Take It - Twisted Sister |
I got to get a ruling from the Commish.
|
Quote:
A ruling on? |
Quote:
One of the rules? |
Quote:
I'm guessing he wants Clapton, but not sure. If so, I think he's fair game. |
Quote:
That's close. |
I don't know if everyone would agree, though.
