I know everyone has their own priorities, etc., but I just don't know how people have the time for so much TV. We still have a DVR full of entire seasons of shows we haven't started yet from last year, just trying to get through older stuff first. I have a bunch of stuff on Netflix I'd watch if we could get through the 500GB on the DVR.
Then again, binging TV (unless it's live sports) is not something I've ever done or want to do. I suppose if I spent entire weekends, 20 hours-ish, I could get through a good bit of stuff. Maybe once the last kid is out of the house next fall, we can finally catch-up and I can think about watching episodes/series when they come out, instead of months (or years) later. |

Agreed. Yeah, the coach beard episode was a waste IMHO but the rest of the season was just as good as the first. Nate

We can get in about 2 episodes of a show once the kids are in bed, grab a cocktail, etc...That puts us in bed by about 11:00. My oldest is 11 so there are certain shows we can watch with him around that helps. Up until recently when they fled south for the winter my in laws used to have the kids sleep over about 2X a month. We would usually door dash and binge something that night or the next morning. |
I thought through it and there's just not that much time for sitting down and actually paying attention to a show. At least right now. That's going to change once we become empty-nesters.
It goes like this... Summer, both kids are typically home and stay up late, so if we're not out doing something, we're all sitting in the family room watching something (sports, GSN, something we all will watch) while we each are doing our own thing, or maybe playing cards together, until about 10pm. Then Michelle and I go back to our bedroom and watch the 10pm news, then she usually reads and quickly falls asleep. Fall/Winter, it's football season so that eliminates Saturday, Sunday, Monday and Thursday nights for the most part. In November, high school basketball starts so throw in 2-4 games a week that keep us busy at night until the end of February. When we have a quiet night, we will usually watch DVR shows from about 8:30 or 9 until 10, then it's the news and same routine as above. Spring, basketball transitions to softball in mid-March so again, limited nights at home to watch TV. I can't think of a single time we watched a DVR show together in the middle of a Saturday or Sunday, so it's just those 60-90 minute slots on nights we happen to be home when we can watch the shows that are piling up on the DVR. Even though the technology has changed, our viewing habits (primetime) haven't. *shurg* |
My wife will watch NFL with me, so all day Sunday we have either Giants or Red Zone. I usually watch the 12 Huskies games by myself.
Otherwise I watch all my sports, including about every Mets game, on my laptop while we watch whatever random shows, so I am usually multitasking. |
We put our son to bed around 7:45p. So we have a few hours of hanging out afterwards. My wife goes to bed around 9:30p (she's a teacher) and I usually stay up to around midnight. So I have plenty of hours to watch TV.
My wife isn't a fan of any sports, so if I have a game on (usually soccer), its on a second screen while we're watching something else. |
Started watching For All Mankind on Apple.
Interesting premise that got me asking about the Soviet program to the Moon. Apparently the Soviets had an unmanned lander that crashed same time as the US landed on the moon. Also, in their Soyuz program (equivalent to Apollo), a cosmonaut in Soyuz 1 died cursing the program/people as his capsule burnt up as it fell back to earth. Getting back to the show ... it's kept my interest as an alternate reality/dimension. Also like how all the astronauts drive vintage corvettes (love the 1964 and 1965 look). |
The wife and I both enjoyed the new season of Dexter.
|
So, I'm watching this Boba Fett show and it's everything we always wanted: Boba Fett is remarkably old & soft, he is super kind to all of his enemies, he has a teen gang with multi-colored scooters that saved him from a wookie-skunk, and he desperately wants to comfort a depressed Rancor. What in THEE fuck??
|
Rancors are like Pit Bulls apparently. It's all in how they're raised.
|
Mare of Easttown was so good. Not an easy watch, but certainly a worthwhile one. Exactly the right length. Wouldn’t want a second more or less.
|
Watched Tom Hanks "Greyhound" on Apple TV.
About a WW2 destroyers defending a convoy from a wolfpack. Assuming they leveraged some scenes from real life, there were a couple that I didn't know had happened as part of "combat". |
Quote:
This looks good and I'm surprised I had not heard of it before. But I'll watch any WW2 movie and especially one with Tom Hanks. Saw Midway the other day on TV. For a recent movie, the special effects were pretty bad. Enjoyed it mostly but for a budget that size, I thought it would look much better. |

I just logged in because I wanted to tell somebody that the Boba Fett show feels like just stupid, lazy derivative storytelling. In the speeder chase, we got a great big heaping of fan-service with a C-3PO clone, an R2 clone, the robots from the Phantom Menace, aliens from Jabba's band... It just feels like they're throwing tropes at us in place of doing anything interesting. Hey, remember *this* alien costume? Remember *this* droid? Remember *this* speeder? Look, there's a rancor, remember those? (Oh, and Machete, because we're directed by Robert Rodriguez.) I just...the Mandalorian felt campy at times, but in a fun sort of way. The Boba Fett show just feels like a wasted opportunity. My SO just said it reminded her of a Star Wars episode of the Power Rangers...and now I can't get that out of my head. |
I know it's the "Book of Boba Fett" but hopefully they elaborate some on Fennec. It's not like she's some shit character either, she's been a bounty hunter since the Clone Wars.
|
I agree Boba Fett is not as "fun" to watch but its not hardship to watch it. Better than 80+% of Netflix and Prime shows IMO.
I appreciate the additional backstory to him, Fennec, learning more about the Tusken Raiders etc. and in general, the world of Star Wars. |
Saw Eternals on Disney+.
It was okay. Some great special effects, good action etc. but the story line of "why they exists" seems BS to me. Overly and unnecessarily complicates MCU, not my favorite characters but whatever. FWIW, Angela Jolie < Gal Gadot. |
I love The Mandalorian. Love it.
I was onboard with Boba Fett for the first two episodes. The second one, I thought, was particularly good. The third one, however, this most recent one was a complete dud. It was weird. The action sequences were terrible (unlike the train sequence from the second episode which was excellent) and it’s unclear why Boba Fett would even want to be a crime lord, since he seems to have zero interest in crime. That’s fine, if that’s the story you want to tell - his redemptive arc or what have you, but that’s not what seemed to be served up. He still looks sweet in that armor though. |
Somehow blitzed 5 episodes of The Flight Attendant last night and it's really good. HBO Max.
|
Flight Attendant was pretty good. We just finished another HBO Max show - Station 11 which was fantastic. It's not as good as the book, IMO, but it decided to do it's own thing and it really worked well.

My son was watching, and I didn't realize this was an MCU property I evaluated the plot and acting for fifteen minutes and Dismissed it as another lame DC play for a successful comic movie. I thought it was a step in the right direction, for DC. WHEN I learned it was Marvel, it can only be classified as disappointing.. |

Binge watched the new part 1 season of Ozarks. As good as before but do think the cartel arc was too convenient.
Love Marty. Love the emergence of Wendy. Love Ruth, hope Julia Garner gets many more great roles. No word on s4 part 2 yet but can't wait. Before starting on s4, rewatched last 2 episodes of s3. I'd forgotten how gut wrenching to see Wendy go through "that". I actually thought Ozark was filmed in MO or AR but its actually primarily in GA using Lake Lanier and Allatoona. Wonder how much that house will sell for. |

Are Discovery and Picard any good?
|
Quote:
Haven't seen Discovery. Mostly enjoyed Picard season 1. I'm more a casual Trek fan and I think there were some things in season 1 that bothered the more hardcore fans and understandably so. But it also did a good job of touching some prior nostalgia(fanservice) while weaving a new story, though one point in the ending was a bit jarring to me, even for scifi. Got me wondering: looks like Picard season 2 is about to come out: March 3-May 5. So that means I'll probably go get Paramount for a month starting in April or May. SI |
For Mandalorian fans but not Boba Fett fans, watch this week's episode.
Trust me. |
Been watching new Korean zombie series "All of Us are Dead". Not Romero zombie as they can die by non-head shots but good enough. Setting is in school .
Plot is below average but but great special effects. Survivors fight back with archery bows (not ideal but guess better than Daryl's stupid crossbow) and anything else they can pick up. Some love interest, revenge, societal structure etc. stuff mixed in. The Kingdom is better because of the historical setting and didn't have the teen love angst stuff. But worth your time if you are a zombie aficionado. |
Finished the final season of The Expanse. What a great series. That scene with Amos & Bobbie on the Ring in the finale was fantastic! I do think the Marcos arc dragged on too long but can't complain too much.
I want more. But won't be anymore unless some other studio picks it up which is unlikely. So that means I may have to read the 2-3 books that continue after the show series ended. I want to learn more about the protomolecule, see more spaceships fighting, go on more adventures with the Roci. Thank you Amazon for picking it up from SyFy. |
I would say it is rare a TV show can actually change your perspective but Rogue Trip on Disney comes pretty close.
|
The Woman That Lives Across The Street From The Girl In The Window was majorly disappointing. Just pretty ridiculous.

Started watching Yellowstone with my Peacock (Olympics) subscription. Want to move to Montana now and buy me a bunch of open (& cheap land), truck and cowboy hat. Maybe another rifle and pistol to add to my collection.
I like how it shows life on a reservation. I'd like to think its highly embellished but think much of the life portrayed is not quite that embellished. |

I made it thru Ozark part 1. It was just kind of there. At this point I feel like I've heard one too many Laura Linney speeches for the rest of my life. She was great early on, but the writing for her just kinda was meh this season. The Byrde kids did a lot with what they were given.

Liked Alice in Borderland, got through the 8 episodes in the last 3 nights. Netflix original, only one season so far but with a second commissioned.
It's a Japanese show based on an old manga/anime (not sure which, but not sure what the difference is anyway). People find themselves in a deserted Tokyo and have to play violent games to win playing cards and visas that allow them to live until their next game. It's a bit violent, and a bit twisty-turny. Not award winning tv, but entertaining. I also watched three seasons of Doom Patrol. Not sure why, it was a bit crap. |
Ricky Gervais's "After Life" is still one of my very favorite series. I wasn't expecting season 3, but he 100% hits the mark so many times in this one. He really attacks the realities of dealing with death, and people and moving on, while not wanting to. I'll rewatch is all again easy.
|
Ricky Gervais has mastered his style - his show characters are all painfully normal, average looking, weird - you laugh at their antics, but then suddenly, at some moment later in the series, you're actually vested in them and care what happens to them. Because everyone is just so flawed and vulnerable and unlike other types of characters you get used to seeing over and over again on TV.

Space Force s2 coming out Feb 18 on Netflix. Orville s3 coming out Jun 2 on Hulu Thinking about dropping Disney & AppleTV for now and getting Paramount to catch up on Discovery and Picard is coming out in Mar. Is there one software, app that I can log into and easily control all these subscriptions? |
Not streaming, but Reelz is premiering a documentary on Sunday night about the Rhode Island nightclub fire that killed 100 people during a Great White concert. Sunday is the 19th anniversary of the fire. It's called The Guest list, but in typical reality TV fashion, they felt compelled to add AMERICA'S DEADLIEST ROCK CONCERT to the title.

Watching some Ray Donovan on Peacock.
He really drinks a lot of whiskey, 1-2 shots if good for me. He gulps then down. Also, he must live in a world where there is not video cams at boat docks, fancy apartments etc. I don't like Mickey. He's okay in small doses but he's at the same level as Ray with scenes etc. and beyond belief he hasn't been killed already. |
Some recent shows I’ve been watching:
Station Eleven: It’s a 10 part limited series based on a book about a global flu pandemic that wipes out 99% of the human population. Hits a little close to home given the current environment. It takes place in a few different timelines. It’s an excellent show. Really fantastic. One of the best of last year. On HBO Max. Peacemaker: HBO Max show based on John Cena’s character from the new Suicide Squad movie. Just wrapped up it’s first season. I loved it. Super funny and really managed to make Peacemaker an interesting and complex character. One of the best opening sequences ever and Vigilante is the best. All Of Us Are Dead: Another Korean zombie show. This time in a school. Only two episodes in, but it’s great so far. Koreans are cornering the market on zombie fare after this, The Kingdom and Train To Busan. On Netflix. Legend of Vox Machina: An animated D&D show based off of the Critical Roll streaming show. I’m not at all familiar with Critical Roll, but have enjoyed the animated show. It’s funny, gory and all around delightful. On Amazon Prime. |

I watched this late Sunday night and it was intense. 75% heartbreaking, 20% infuriating and 5% inspirational. I did not know the history of Joe Kinan the last survivor pulled out of the fire, and I am in awe of how his life has progressed since that day. And Dee Snider is always a treat to listen to because he never holds back and doesn't sugarcoat anything. Tough to watch but I recommend it. |
Wow, The American's is so good. It's been on my watchlist for so long, and I convinced the wife to watch it and we've hammered through 2.5 seasons in about a week. It's incredible.
And I apologize if I've ever said anything bad about Keri Russell, she's so freaking amazing. |

I want to watch it but wife just refuses. Why, I have no idea. She has several shows like this and Better Call Saul that she just will not watch without reason.

Better Call Saul is, also, amazing. Do you have any chance to go solo on any of these? Fire up an iPad with some earbuds? I watch almost everything by myself. My wife isn’t a TV watcher. She will only watch a very small number of shows, so I’m left on my own for most things I watch. I tend to watch my stories first thing in the morning while I drink coffee and have some sort of sweet, delicious unhealthy breakfast treat. It is the way. |
Finished Space Force s2. It was fun but eh.
I like how they setup s3 with the finale. |
Watched a couple episodes of The Americans. I enjoyed it and will continue watching it.
But Keri "the scene" was gratuitous and unnecessary IMO. I know its rated TV-MA but that rape scene should be called out explicitly. |
I spent the better part of 30 minutes last night scrolling through My List and then generally scrolling through a couple of different categories and couldn't find a single thing I wanted to watch. Good thing my kids are making use of NF so the cost is (somewhat) worth it.

The "Martha" storyline in The Americans is one of the most tragic and heart wrenching lines that I've seen. It's a long play, and it's a long decent with no redemption and it's just a deeply sad character arc. I don't think I've ever been that invested in a side character in a long, long time.

I'm up to episode 4. I'm enjoying the acting & storyline. However, I'm no prude but don't think I can watch this with the missus (and certainly not the kids). Apparently it came out on FX? Which means it was easily available via cable. US standards on what is appropriate for TV sure has changed. |
Just started watching Reacher on Amazon last night. Having read a bunch of the Lee Child books I was hopeful this adaptation was going to be closer to the original work, and I'm happy to report it is. I'm sorry, but Tom Cruise attempting to play Jack Reacher is just ridiculous. The TV series is following the story of the very first book "The Killing Floor". I'm about 3 episodes in and really enjoying it.
|
Really have enjoyed For All Mankind. Joel Kinnamen is terrific in this.
For those not familiar, it's an alternative history show about if the Soviets had gotten to the moon first. Solid space/NASA drama with the cool butterfly effect of that event and how it rippled through history. Not sure what the budget was for the show but the space stuff is all incredibly well done. As good as any movie I've seen. Quote:
Yeah, a few minor changes, but all in all, it's what I envision Reacher to be. Show kicks ass. Already got renewed too. |
I’d echo this. I’m about to wrap up season 2 of For All Mankind after binging through season 1 as well. A good group of unique and built out characters that allows the show to have a good number of storylines going on besides the main Russia v. USA spade battle.

Finished watching Netflix's Vikings: Valhalla.
Read up on how accurate it was. Essentially the main players real but they didn't exist (or were adults) at the same time. Events were real but didn't quite align with the true timeline etc. I guess to be expected. But still a pretty good show, lots of nice fighting action. One thing I learn was there truly were Vikings that converted to Christianity and there was tension with other Pagan Vikings. Go Shield Maidens! |
Wife and I last year decided we would watch all the oscar nominees for best picture
So far we have seen Dune- OK, typical sci-fan. Not a fan of the book or genre Don't look up- Really enjoyed it a lot but understands it doesn't stand a chance Belfast- Liked it more than I thought, typical artsy Oscar type movie but some great one liners. King Richard- Our favorite so far. Smith was awesome. Really enjoyable. My 8 year old daughter loved it |
|
Finished Station Eleven a couple of nights ago. I also read the book a couple of years ago, not a bad adaptation but the longer the series went on the more it diverged, and the more it diverged the worse it got. The ending was a bit of a mess.
Looked good, and well put together with the timeline jumping though. Season Two of Raised by Wolves is next up. |

I think it's good. It's just so weird that I don't know what I'm watching half the time. |
I’ve started watching Severance on Apple+. It’s fantastic so far. Interesting concept - people work at a place that servers their memories when they go to work. So, they have no idea who they are or what the world is even like while they’re at work and when they leave, they have no memory of what they did while working.
Definitely recommend it. |
Just watched The Rescue on Disney plus. It is a documentary about the rescue of the 12 kids and their coach from the caves in Thailand. Absolutely riveting despite knowing the outcome. By the end wife and I were both in tears.

Finished this last night. It was enjoyable for what it is. I doubt anyone else cares (and least of all my wife), but it bugs me that despite being set in the 1000s all the Vikings look like they just finished looting Lindisfarne back in 793 CE. Even the fact that they call themselves 'vikings' at this point in time is off. None of it matters at all to the story etc., but for me it feels like watching a movie on the Vietnam war with the Americans flying the Union Jack and calling themselves a British Colony. On the plus side, some impressive scenes and special effects - the whole London Bridge episode in particular, plus the battle in the final episode, all very impressive. The cast for the most part are all solid too. We never made it through the original series of Vikings and dropped it after a few seasons, but I think with a clear ending in sight for this one re: 1066 we'll stick with it for the 3 seasons. |
We just finished watching Life & Beth. It was enjoyable. It is definitely not what you would expect from Amy Schumer.

For the second year in a row wife and I made an effort to watch all the Oscar nominated movies and did all but one. We left out Drive My Car. Not doing a 3 hour movie with subtitles
My rankings CODA- absolutely fantastic. Just a great story about family. Well written and acted. Perfect mix of funny and poignant. King Richard- Smith is deserving of the Oscar for best actor. He was excellent and it was a great story with some stuff I didn't know about. Don't Look Up- Great cast, quirky acting. some funny parts. An enjoyable film Belfast- Kind of weird but in a good way. I liked the kid. Cool cinematography dune- Classic sci-fi. I didn't read the books so I have no frame of reference. looking forward to the second one. West Side Story- It was a musical. Songs and acting were good, it was long. Not sure it is worthy of an oscar nomination Nightmare alley- Kind of weird but in a good way Licorice Pizza- Was kind of all over the place. I like the girl but the movie was too flat. The Power of the Dog- totally boring. Kept waiting for something to happen and it never did. Just a snoozefest, which is why it is the favorite, just like Nomadland. . |
Will Smith.....WTF was that. Get over yourself. Rock should file assault charges

It's a one-of-a-kind thing. I found it very moving and interesting, and I recommend it. I would think that seeing the live show could be really enchanting. Some disagree, and I guess I can see why, as well. But, I suppose, if you'd totally hate a magic show, then skip this. |
