No matter what I think of the rule changes, they are what they are, so ... gotta feel good about 15 goals in 2 days for the Thrashers without Ilya.

Two words: Washington. Capitals. |
The beauty of the Center Ice Package is threefold:
1. I get to watch pretty much all Wings games. 2. I get to watch Hockey Night in Canada again 3. I get to watch all the other games. I watched HNiC tonight. Such a joy. The music. The production values. Coaches Corner. Leo Racicot and Lighting Boutique commercials. I have noticed in the first few days that both HNiC games and TSN games do a much better job than all other broadcasts at getting a good balance on the sound. Both TSN and HNiC have mikes that capture the crowd noise and rink-level noise. The announcers fit nicely into the background. The rest of the broadcasts, however, barely pipe in any crowd/rink noise, so you're left with listening only to a couple of announcers with the sounds of the game off in the far, far distance. Grapes was great tonight. Back in mid-season form already. Great suit. Great tie. Bitching about how Wellwood got sent to the AHL while the Leafs kept a bunch of young Europeans up. He also mentions how the Leafs have drafted only one Canadian in the last two years. That was just the start of it. A great segment. |

Though despite my initial response, you have to be happy with how well Bondra is playing. If he's going like that and you have Hossa and Kovalchuck... Atlanta could have one of the most potent offensese in the league. Not too many teams anymore can boast three pure goal scorers like that. Many don't even have one. |
yeah, production values for HNIC are just amazing. lots of subtle things that you didn't see on ESPN. and, of course, the best theme music of all time. my favorite day of the year is when they start at like noon and spend the entire day doing stories about hockey, capped off by a couple of games between canadian teams.
fun Avs game tonight. Stars tie the game with about 8 minutes left. not long after that, Hinote checks Arnott into the glass. it's clean, but Arnott catches the metal and gets cut pretty badly. Bill "Longneck" Guerin comes after Hinote, as does Arnott. Laperriere comes to Hinote's rescue, cancelling Guerin's penalty. Arnott gets the only fighting major (Hinote didn't fight back) and an instigator to boot. Avs get a 7 minute power play with 6:30 to play and capitalize on it. Even without Arnott's gift, the Avs looked much better tonight. I really like Marek Svatos. Peter Budaj looked pretty good for the Avs tonight. |

Caps do suck, but I do think Atlanta is going to the playoffs this year. |

It's called, what, Hockey Day In Canada, I think? It's a great thing. Treats hockey like it should be treated. |
Quote:
and, at least in the past, Center Ice has carried the whole day. |
Oilers undefeated! 82-0 baby! (Wait. Are they still playing 82 games?)
|

I am about tired of Ulanov. I don't think he is going to make it all season, or at least he should not if he doesn't get it together quickly. |
Quote:
I was tired of Ulanov about 40 years ago. He did score some clutch goals down the stretch last season, but they still didn't make the playoffs, so I don't know how clutch they could be considered. He doesn't really bring anything to the table execpt "big" hits and a moderate shot from the point and IMO, he makes too many defensive blunders to overlook for the occasional bone crunching hit. He's always the second to go when I play the Oilers in EHM (Conklin being the first). |
I thought Ulanov had a valuable role last season. Now he seems to be having a tough time dealing with the "new NHL."
I'm ready to see how Semenov stacks up this season. Certainly Igor has had a tough enough time to justify bringing Alexei into the lineup. I suppose we'll be seeing Brad Winchester on the roadtrip. I wonder how that will go. |
Quote:
Well, according to MacTavish, he can substitue any player on his other 3 lines into the 1st without missing a beat. I guess we'll see with Smyth out for a couple of games at least. Ulanov is what, 68 years old now? I think he was drafted by the Jets for crying out loud. That's friggin old, time to let the kids play. Oh, wait. We traded them all for Pronger. |
Quote:
Initially, I was unhappy about Chris Pronger because I hated the way he used to play. He was a guy who bent the rules every chance he had. He is still just as solid playing a clean game so far. He has made a believer out of me at this point. |
Nevermind. Found it.
|
Quote:
Hmm... my Center Ice showed that as starting at 4:00pm. |
Nice. 2-0 already for the Wings.
|
Wings shoulda had another PP too.
Holmer got mugged. |
Wow. The Wings just outshot Calgary 22-4 in the first period.
It's 3-0. The Wings have gone 3/7 on the powerplay. |
And all those penalities were legit. Two double minors for high sticks.
Don't blame em on the rules. |
Brutal.
You hear that creaking noise? It's the bandwagon starting to collapse. |
Quote:
You know, as much as I like to see the Wings win 6-3, and I love it, Kipper is my fantasy goalie. If only they had scored 6 on someone else. Oh well... I am really enjoying watching this team play. It's taking some getting used to, all the new names, but I must say I like watching guys like Franzen, Cleary, Samuelsson, and the like, more than I did Brett Hull and Steve Thomas. Lilja has been playing very well along side Lidstrom. I like that pairing a lot. Franzen seems to be a very good fit with Draper and Maltby. Datsyuk and Zetterberg are playing as advertised. Shanahan is playing his best hockey in a few years. And the most forgotten man on the Wings roster, Robert Lang, has been stellar. It's only three games in and there is a ton of hockey yet to be played (a ton), but so far, so good for the Wings. |
Quote:
I watched the game Saturday, but skipped Coach's Corner... I'm still greatly annoyed at his antics from the last season of Coach's Corner. Grapes is great when he sticks to hockey... when he gets all political and pissy about French Canadians & Europeans he's an idiot I'm ashamed is the figure head for such a great broadcast. |
Quote:
I've loved Don Cherry since I was a wee lad. While I agree wholeheartedly, that he comes off as a major idiot when starts wandering down that political and pissy path about French Canadaians and Europeans, I'm usually just much more amused than angry or irritated. Perhaps it's because I'm not Canadian, but I just can't take the guy seriously. Just look how he dresses. I think of his rants like something you'd hear on pro wrestling. Just a bunch of piss and wind there to be enjoyed. |
Quote:
for a Wings fan, you are remarkably in tune with me |
The way he dresses is cool. It just goes to show that people do have a problem with people who go out of the mainstream. People look for any reason to discard you, even your choice of clothing.
EDIT... I forgot the winky. ;) |
Quote:
I thought he had a point. They keep big guys who don't score instead of giving a chance to Kyle Wellwood, who scores goals. In today's NHL, Kyle Wellwood may be much more valuable than big guys who will be pylons. |
Quote:
NOT PYLONS!!!!! CONES |
Quote:
That's how I used to take him... I think the turning point came when he did his French Canadian thing last season, and then Cuthbert got fired. As much as I once enjoyed Coach's Corner, if I had to pick where CBC should spend their money from a strictly hockey POV it would be on Cuthbert. But Cherry is a ratings bonanza so what do I know. The other problem I have with what hes says is that he says it on a public broadcast station, not on a private one. Personally I think his prejudice crap shouldn't be allowed on the CBC... he he stuck with hockey fine, but he tends to sprinkle his amazing knowledge of the game with stupidity. As well the whole Quebec wanting to seperate thing, and at the same time you have the CBC employing a guy who thinks they are all babies. It's inappropriate, IMO. And don't even get me started on him being a Top 10 canidate of the Greatest Canadian... if any of you American guys come apon a Canadian calling Americans idiots... just point that little tidbit out, it should shut them up. I'm curious did he say anthing about what Avery said a few weeks ago? Quote:
Yeah, like I said when he sticks to hockey he is usally spot on. |
Quote:
Nah, didn't mention Avery or French Canadians at all. |
OH MY GOD! The Leafs freakin' suck!!! They have no defence!!! Berg is an idiot!!! Kaberle refuses to shoot the puck!!! Pat Quinn attracts pucks to his head!!! Allison & Lindros should NEVER be allowed to be in the shoot-out because they CAN'T SKATE!!! Wellwood is the only player on the team who deserves to be there, and what did they do at the start of the season? Put him in the AHL!!!! Arghhhhh!!!!
Quinn for god's sake throw Domi in the shoot-out next time, at least he can skate... and it might throw the goali off or something... otherwise besides Wellwood you have no viable options!!! Arghhhh!!!!! I'm really sorry Belfour, you deserve so much more!!!! ---- End rant... I will now drink my sorrows away, see you all later! |
sabres win in OT :D
|
Hey, at least you get to watch hockey tonight. Some of us are in markets that got blacked out :(
Not that I would have been watching the game intently all night with playoff baseball on, but it would be nice to have something to flip back and forth between or PIP. SI |
Good thing the Flames have the best D in the league and the best player in the world.
Oh wait... ![]() |
Quote:
There is a team up north you could start cheering for. 82-0 baby!!! :) |

well that was kind of fun. nice to see Darren McCarty again, even if it was just for a millisecond as he was getting tossed. so, what do the Flames have against Laaksonen? |
dola
I'm pretty encouraged by the last 2 Avs games. The young guys are looking good - Svatos, Liles and Woljski especially. Turgeon, someone I've always liked, has done pretty well, especially on the power play. Brisebois, someone I've always disliked, has surprised me in his own end. I haven't had to call him "Pyl...er, Cones" yet. They still need to shake the nasty habit of getting a lead and then coasting, something that's plagued them for years. |
I don't suppose someone would like to clue in clueless me as to the plyons-cones thing?
SI |
Quote:
all I know is RPI-Fan seems to be hellbent on getting his message out that pylons should be called cones. I'm humoring him, even though he is totally wrong, mostly because I feel bad for anyone who has to spend time in Troy. |
|
Quote:
McCarty looks kind of silly with that weird, billy-goat goatee thing he has on his chin. He needs to do something about that. |
Quote:
Heh! Go Lions! |
Quote:
Glad you feel better....i just want to remind you its 3 games in.....We TIED the consensus best team in the NHL twice, and lost a very entertaining 1 goal game to Montreal....we are without our best player, Mats Sundin, and Jeff O'neal for most of these games...Belfour has played bad, and the Aki Berg/Wade Belak pairing has been horrible.......overall, i think you maybe overreacting a bit ;) |
Quote:
I tend to do that after the Leafs loose :)... I still stand by my opinions of Berg, our defence, and our ability to win the shoot-out. As for Belfour, he hasn't played great... but alot of the goals he's been giving up, I can't really blame on him since the defence has just left him high and dry for the most part. |
Two ties and a loss, against teams that are all undefeated, is not bad. It's not good, but it's not bad. It amazes me how all the experts had the Leafs losing last night by something like 8-1, yet when they pull off a third-period comeback to get a point (on the road!) those same experts still trash them.
That said, the following Leafs are officially in danger of joining the Benoit Hogue Memorial Shit-list: - Aki Berg (one foot in the door) - Wade Belak (play your three shifts, get into your one fight, and get the hell of the ice please) - Jason Allison (SKATE! Just SKATE! You must know how to skate, right?) |
Quote:
of course they wouldn't be undefeated if you had won no would they :D Enjoy trailing the Sabres in the standings, you'll get used to it :p |

Quote:
Ok, we can call their two losses, ties if you want... but they lost, they still got one point, but they lost. I'll agree the Leafs are playing decent, and like always they are over achieving... on paper they have no business competing with Ottawa, but they are, and I'm happy about that. But if Ottawa "won" those games instead of the Leafs "losing" them, then I wouldn't be all pissy :). And the fact that Quinn is still putting Lindros & Allison in the shoot-out is ridiculus! |
