I assume that's Littleton? I stayed a week there from about where the photo was taken, assuming if I got the town right.

You are correct, sir.

Hey it was the last post I made before I headed home after work, sometimes it's not easy to tell if it's the top of the page post. Don't worry it's been fixed.

Putting this one in a spoiler tag because it's pretty disgusting. Had a cow having a calf this morning and it was a giant calf so I helped her by pulling it out. Problem was a few minutes later her uterus and reproductive tract fell out too (prolapsed uterus would be the proper term).

Anyway, myself, a vet, and one of my employees eventually got everything back inside her where it was supposed to be and sewed her up so it won't fall out again hopefully. She's not feeling too hot right now but hopefully she'll take off. Lots of times this will kill a cow because a big artery gets severed but I caught this one as soon as it happened so she stands a good chance.

WARNING: THIS PICTURE IS DISGUSTING

Spoiler

Oh man, that's nasty. I'm guessing you have to wash her off pretty thoroughly as well? I can't imagine all that grass is the most sanitary thing. Will she be able to have more babies if it all goes well?

During the process of putting the uterus back in, the vet was pouring a disinfectant solution over the parts that were about to go back in and I was plucking as much of the straw off as I could but obviously we wouldn't have gotten it all. I'll start her on ampicillin to help with the inevitable infection. If all goes well, she should be able to have herself many more babies.

Good news is I just got her to stand up for me. Understandably she's a little wobbly yet so I'm just going to let her rest and hopefully she'll be up and at it tomorrow and ready to milk!

CraigSca 02-10-2012 04:11 PM

Is she at risk of this whole thing happening again? I would think that after this happens, there would be a high risk of this occurring in the future, no?

I wasn't sure, so I checked the Merck Veterinary Manual and it said there is no increased risk in subsequent calvings. This particular incident likely happened from my assistance in pulling the giant calf she was having out. She was laying at a weird angle...

Best way to avoid it in the future will be to use a Jersey bull on her. That'll create a tiny calf that'll be little more than pushing a sideways turd out compared to this calf which would've been like shitting out a boulder.

MRS. A: "So what do you want for dinner tonight?"

ME: "Um. Not hamburger."

I wonder if at some point a pitcher is on the mound, takes a moment to let that image sink in, and goes, "My job is awesome."

Did you include any raptors in your images?

That's what I thought.

That's a really interesting picture of Keith Richards in drag.

haha. Thought that too. Also thought, damn - looks like it'd be pretty intimidating the first few times.

Matthean 02-10-2012 07:08 PM

The only thing saving Lindsey in that pic is the lack of wrinkles. Once those hit, she's going to instantly look 60.

I hate them. And I'm also not looking at that pic. :)

Flickr is celebrating its 8th birthday today. They've been posting favorite pictures of 8 of their longest-duration members. Some of the shots are really cool. I don't want to violate any restrictions on the image sharing, so I'll just pass the links for the blog entries...

Cool pix, tk but I guess 8 years would be a long time in teh internets. Most have been here 11+ years.
