Nice pick - The Sugarhill Gang were awesome.

Someone that knows less about rap than me? Is that possible? |
Quote:
If you only knew how funny this question is. |
Quote:
Growing up I despised rap and still do to this day. I have been a musician since I was 8 and appreciate every kind of music but for some reason I have never had any tolerance for rap. |
Quote:
Well, fwiw, the song is considered to be the first ever hit rap song and basically the origin of the entire genre. In my mind it is more clear a "trendsetter" than the previously mentioned "Smell's Like Teen Spirit" because you could argue that there were a lot of similar bands and songs that cropped up atht esame time as Teen Spirit, and that it just happened to be the most popular. |
Quote:
If you mean The Organisation, you didn't even spell it correctly. And if that's who you mean, then, no, I haven't. :) I can throw a lot of things out there that people won't know that I would love to draft. They'll be Free Agent picks, though. No sense in waiting on a draft pick. ;) |
Quote:
I've heard other people say this, coming from similar perspectives (they love all types of music, can appreciate all kinds, etc.), but am totally confused how that could be possible. I could understand not appreciating the lyrics, especially more recently with the heavy emphasis on violence and women...but the beats, the rhythms, sometimes I'm just amazed at what I'm hearing (underneath the lyrics). |
My pick is coming up... an artist who's been pacing the green room and frantically calling their agent to ask why they haven't been taken yet.
|
Quote:
Great start, but this comment is a biiit too early. Lots of other catagories around, and I do think that most voters will be looking more at the "Classic" and "Epic" catagories than any other to be frank. |
Quote:
Not the same. The organization is a band that was formerly known as death angel. I am in no means being critical of the pic or of the artist and their effect on that genre. I would have never listened to a rap song at the point I was at in the early 90's. |
Quote:
Billy Joel? :D |
Quote:
And I didn't think you were. I'm rather certain I have never heard "Rapper's Delight" all the way through, I'm just quite aware of it. "Walk This Way" was originally an Aerosmith song (could've been used in Covers I think) and was and has been heavily rotated ever since. |
Quote:
I guess for the same reason I can't undersatnd how someone can't appreciate bagpipes, tin whistles and fiddles in punk music. shrug. |

Classic -
Epic - Arena - 1.7 - Welcome to the Jungle - Guns N' Roses Trendsetter - 2.4 - Heartbreak Hotel - Elvis Presley Love Song - One-Hit Wonder - Party - Crossover - Cover - Anti-Establishment - This is the song that introduced Elvis to America, which in turn makes it the song that introduced Rock and Roll to much of meainstream (i.e. white) America. Yes, black artists had been doing rock and roll for years and Rock Around the Clock had already come and gone, and you could even argue that "That's All Right" was the real Elvis crossover song. But Heartbreak Hotel was the big hit that largely launched the Rock and Roll era, not to mention Elvis's career. And yes, like a lot of songs that will be taken early this techincally could also be a cover. But I doubt the voters think of it that way. |
Quote:
I agree. BTW, I think Bucc got a steal with the Stones song in the second round. I think that was a better pick than the Public Enemy song personally (which I thought also was a solid pick). |
Yep, good pick, Maple. I was thinking it might be Hound Dog, though.

Quote:
Well, either way, it's good to be King. ;) |
Huh - I gotta say, purely on personal taste, Presley never did it for me. I can recognize the impact without liking the music though. :D
|
ntndeacon PM'ed his pick...
Classic - Epic - 2.5 - Another Brick in the Wall — Pink Floyd Arena - Trendsetter - 1.6 - Good Vibrations - Beach Boys Love Song - One-Hit Wonder - Party - Crossover - Cover - Anti-Establishment - |
Quote:
I don't understand them either. :) Quote:
I had Elvis in my trendsetter list as well. However, I didn't pick him because of the reasons you list above. There are a lot of people that will discredit this pick because he was not the first true rock 'n roll artist, covered a lot of his songs, etc, etc. Good pick, though. I think he had to be a top trendsetter pick. |
Quote:
ditto There's a couple of artists I'm surprised ML passed over for that pick. In FOF terms, that's a high volatility pick - the voters may love it, they may hate it. |
Quote:
That would have been my Anti-Establishment song. |
I would put Another Brick in the Wall squarely in the arena category, for sure...Pink Floyd was the definitive arena rock band for a while, no?
|
this trade has me screwed up, can someone print the order of the next few picks
|
Quote:
I'll echo everyone else -- a solid song to pick, but probably the least effective category to put it in. |
Quote:
Still, putting all that aside, anyone who claims Elvis Presley wasn't one of the two or three most influential figures in rock and roll history is just trying to be argumentative. |
Classic - Yesterday- The Beatles 1.5
Epic - Arena - Trendsetter - Rock Around The Clock- Bill Haley and The Comets 2.6 Love Song - One-Hit Wonder - Party - Crossover - Cover - Anti-Establishment - The song that set the trend. |
Quote:
It certainly fits into either category. I was a in high school when it came out and remember it more for the social cometary then just as a great song. |
Quote:
I think there is a gigantic blurry line between Arena Rocker and Epic. A lot of things can go in both. Quote:
Should be: 2.6 vtbub 2.7 Butter_of_69 2.8 NoMyths 2.9 Lathum 2.10 Subby Round 3 3.1 Subby 3.2 Lathum 3.3 NoMyths 3.4 Butter_of_69 3.5 Maple Leafs 3.6 ntndeacon 3.7 vtbub 3.8 lordscarlet 3.9 Buccaneer 3.10 Oilers9911 |
Quote:
If you're going Floyd for Arena Rock, I don't see how this is the song you pick - particularly based on the definition that Maple Leafs laid out. |
cool, thanks.
My pick is still intact |
Wow, trendsetter is becoming like the center position in the NBA, or like DH in MLB. Teams are just putting random guys in the lineup, without even checking to see if they're any good.
|
I'll give Butter a little while to show up, otherwise I have a pick to use for him.
|
Trendsetter is going to be difficult now. Sure there are plenty of trendsetting artists/songs unpicked, but the question is how many of the voters will recognize, say, a trendsetting Blues song.
|
Quote:
I think it also becomes tricky to define that they were truely a trendsetter. That's what I was trying to say earlier. Finding songs that A) Are truely trendsetters and B) People know are trendsetters - will be difficult. |
Quote:
Not to mention, the category isn't "most influential", it's "trendsetting". There's a difference. Can something (relativelty) obscure really be considered a trendsetter? Or is the song that rips it off and becomes a hit the trendsetter? Edit: For example, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" wasn't especially original. That sound had been around for years, and many great bands had come and gone in relative obscurity playing songs that sounded an awful lot like what Nirvana ended up releasing. They didn't invent anything or even perfect it, but they were the ones who brought it to a larger audience. Original? No. Trendsetting? Without question. |
Quote:
yeah... bands like Velvet Underground do have massive influence, but the public is entirely unaware. In a competition like this you need to go for mass appeal, baby. |
I see NoMyths is in the thread, so I'll make Butter's pick now so we can keep moving.
Classic - Epic - 1.4 - Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen Arena - Trendsetter - Love Song - One-Hit Wonder - Party - Crossover - Cover - Anti-Establishment - 2.7 - Anarchy in the UK - The Sex Pistols |
Quote:
Nice - though I obviously preferred London Calling. |
NoMyths is going to pick a woman, I can feel it.

Quote:
Ooooh....scary. Pick on its way... |

|
Definitely don't have to worry about a Michael Penn tune here ... its too early in the draft for that.
|
A tough choice here, as there are songs I'd prefer to have earlier, but that "two songs sung by women" rule is going to bite some folks in the tail. I'm going to avoid the coming crunch by taking one one of the most popularly beloved and critically important songs by a woman artist. The song has it all -- social consciousness, the civil rights era backdrop, an African-American woman demanding her due...and it rocks, too. Every female vocalist in the modern era walks the trail this song blazed. I also get bonus points for having seen her perform it. With that:
Classic - 1.3 - Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan Epic - Arena - Trendsetter - 2.8 - Respect - Aretha Franklin Love Song - One-Hit Wonder - Party - Crossover - Cover - Anti-Establishment - |
I'm up. correct?
|
Yep.
|
My sources tell me Lathum is going with 2Pac here.

Quote:
Roffle - I almost wrote that as a prediction for you. Interesting pick. |
It's interesting that two of the trendsetters have been cover songs. :)
|
Very worthy choice for first female.
|
I like the Aretha pick.
|
Classic -
Epic - BaBa O'reilly ( also known as teenage wasteland)- The Who 2.9 Arena - Trendsetter - Smells Like Teen Spirit- Nirvana- 1.2 Love Song - One-Hit Wonder - Party - Crossover - Cover - Anti-Establishment - This song just rocks. Period. You can be anywhere this song is playing and not see someone playing air guitar. One of the most recognizable guitar riffs ever. |
Quote:
From the rules: At least two of your songs must be sung by a female |
Yeah. R.I.F.
|
Quote:
Yeah, I just don't see hwo that can work. |
There are two artists that I am just shocked that they haven't been picked yet.
|
When I first heard this song I was just shocked. I had never heard something so completely in-your-face and raw (yes, I was raised on white classic rock). It opened my eyes to the mistrust and anger felt by many memebers of the black community toward the police (clueless was I). My memory is fuzzy, but it seems like I heard this around the time of the LA Riots. In any event, I was in my college years for both. My pick is the anti-establishment anthem Fuck Tha Police by N.W.A.
Classic - Stairway to Heaven, Led Zeppelin 1-1 Epic - Arena - Trendsetter - Love Song - One-Hit Wonder - Party - Crossover - Cover - Anti-Establishment - Fuck Tha Police, N.W.A. 2-10 |
Over blank by blank? uh, wow.
|

Interesting. I had this on my "Where the hell can I fit this in?" list. And I had Pinball Wizard as my top Epic choice. |

I think baba is more recognizable then pinball wizard. ( once people understand what song you are talking about) |
The draft so far...

We ought to compare "Where the hell can I fit this in?" lists, LS. :D

Someone remind St. Cronin not to bing up potential future picks. oops I guess I just did :)

I was thinking the same thing. |

one was a real song, actual anger. the other was an exploitative attempt to ride the coattails of the other. |

By the time -------- came out the alternative rock and gangsta rap were in full swing and the environment was more receptive than it had been when Fuck Tha Police came out. |

Yes but which one was actually CENSORED? Consider the category. |
Get on with your next pick, Subbs. ;)

Subby, you know you're up, right? :)

Fuck Tha Police got NO airplay on the radio or MTV. It was completely underground. It had the word Fuck in the title and if you google it is still listed as F--- Tha Police in many instances. The other song was covered by Kurt Loder every day for like three months. |
Trends don't check with artists to find out if they wrote the song themselves.
Fat Man and Little Boy weren't the first atomic devices built. :) |

grrrrrr now I want to fight you  |

he's got a point though, you're just wrong on this one. trust us. |
There is no freaking way I am going to pass up the chance to have both Freebird and Stairway on my team. The pairing is so freaking sublime that I might have to go build a bong in shop real quick just so I can get high off of this recycled office paper.
So yes, I am picking Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd as my epic song. Because it is so effing epic. I have a better arena song for the down the line. Plus the extended jam is so great. Note: They also have a killer Behind the Music. Classic - Stairway to Heaven, Led Zeppelin (1-1) Epic - Freebird, Lynyrd Skynyrd (3-1) Arena - Trendsetter - Love Song - One-Hit Wonder - Party - Crossover - Cover - Anti-Establishment - Fuck Tha Police, N.W.A. (2-10) |
Quote:
The Jerky Boys were more underground than NWA. Every kid in my high school had that tape. |
Well, I'm definitely going to vote you number one for Most Pandering, Subby. :)
|
Can't believe Freebird fell out of the 1st round.

Fair point.. the more I think about it, the less the covers as trendsetters bothers me... it seems unnatural, but I can't argue agaisnt any of those being trendsetters. |

Classic -Foxy Lady- Jimi Hendrix- 3.2
Epic - BaBa O'reilly ( also known as teenage wasteland)- The Who 2.9 Arena - Trendsetter - Smells Like Teen Spirit- Nirvana- 1.2 Love Song - One-Hit Wonder - Party - Crossover - Cover - Anti-Establishment - Most of Classic song's selected so far can be put in a similar catergory, I wanted to find something that rocks a little more but has withstood th test of time. I waffled back and forth between a few different picks but I didn't think I would get another shot at Jimi. |
Quote:
|
Shit - I was really hoping Hendrix lasted till my pick. I would have gone with All Along the Watchtower as the cover, IMO, or Hey Joe.
|
Quote:
While those are great songs I am trying to keep in mind what will appeal to the masses |
We'll continue the draft over evenings/weekends, although of course we'll expect longer delays between picks.
Please PM me a few picks if you're not going to be checking in outside of work hours. |
