Thanks, Icy...

I went on two different diet and exercise "kicks" over a two year period. The first time I weighed 245 and got down to 195 primarily through reducing caloric intake to less than 2000 per day and then just exercising. That took about 3 months, but I gained most of it back. This past April I was 220 and decided to try the South Beach Diet - at the same time I also started training for a marathon. I got down to 163 in about 3 months or so. South Beach is pretty easy. The name is unfortunate because it is just so trendy-sounding, but the principles behind it are pretty sound. Eat foods that keep your blood sugar on an even keel...stay away from high glycemic foods and alcohol. Eat lots of vegetables, eggs, cheese, whole grains, lean meats...

Anyway, probably more than you wanted to know :)

Two things about that above picture which was quoted by rkmsuf:

Cutting out processed carbs lowers triglycerides and cholesterol, and hence is good for heart health. So you are pretty balanced out - especially if you add exercise into the mix. In fact, I have two eggs, cheese, bacon, V8 juice, coffee and a glass of Lite Vanilla Soy Milk every morning for breakfast and when I tested my cholesterol in December I was at 185, down from over 200 a few years ago.

The other great thing about eggs and cheese is that the fat in them satiate you - so you don't eat as much. Plus they pack a lot of nutrition. Really hard to get that kind of nutrition from any other source at breakfast time.

Eaglesfan27 01-07-2005 10:20 AM

There was an interesting study in the most recident edition of the Journal of the American Medical Academy that demonstrated that the South Beach, Zone, Atkins, and Weight Watchers diets all had similar effects on weight loss, improved cardiac health (as measured by decreased LDL, increased HDL, and one or two other factors which are escaping me right now) as long as they were adhered to. Congrats to Subby and all of the other people who have lost a lot of weight (something I'm working on now.)

Heh - I am pretty sure that if someone followed all of the other principles and exercised seriously then they could still lose a ton of weight in spite of a few brewskis per day. There was one case study mentioned in the book where one of the patients of Dr. Agaston wanted to do the diet, but refused to give up his daily bowl of ice cream...he got his way but followed everything else to the letter and still lost a ton of weight.

The sheer amount of simple carbohydrates the average human consumes in a day is absolutely staggering.

No idea when this came out, but I'm wondering if it's the same study I heard recapped on the radio this week that said that, of the seven leading diet plans, the only one with documented proof of sustained weight loss after "officially" going off the plan was Weight Watchers.

The article I quoted was in the January 2005 edition of JAMA (short for the full name I listed previously.) It is one of the few medical journals I read cover to cover every month, because it has a fairly good reputation.

Eaglesfan27 01-07-2005 02:05 PM

Dola -

This article didn't comment on any effects after someone stopped the diet, it just quoted average weight loss, average improvement in LDL, HDL, and a few other markers after being on any of the diets listed for a year.

Edit: But I digress, back to picture viewing ;)

Probably ... because I didn't word it in a way that even I'm sure I understood what I meant.

Basically, the report I heard appeared to have been saying that:
Of the 7 leading diet plans, only Weight Watchers could show documented proof that, once you stopped being faithful to the diet, you didn't just go right back to your pre-diet weight.

I'm pretty sure I understood what they were trying to say, because there was a couple of minutes of discussion about it afterwards. The general point was along the lines of "nobody goes on Atkins (or any of these plans) expecting to remain on it for the rest of their life". With W.W., apparently your eating habits (or whatever) changed enough that even without consciously following the diet, you managed to avoid going right back up in weight, while with the others the return to pre-diet weight was likely & in fairly short order (I believe it was like 6 months to a year).

There was another caveat worth mentioning I think -- whatever study this was made a point to say that the lack of documentation didn't automatically mean the weight might not stay off -- just that it hadn't been proven.
