Due mostly to the lack of animations, "madden like" jukes, spins, and other special moves are not included in the game. I have a side step animation and that's pretty much it. If you're playing in arcade mode and your controller has triggers, you can use those to side step left and right.

People should not be expecting Madden style arcade play. I have always said that arcade mode in Maximum-Football resembles a slimmed down version of NFL Fever 2000.

OK, now he had to go and make things personal.

Slimmed-down version of NFL Fever 2000? Try scraped to the mother-fucking bone you hack! Fever 2000 wasn't the greatest football game ever, but don't even think of putting Maximum Football in the same sentence with it.

Grrrrr....

Ok, so I spent some time looking through dictionaries this afternoon. I find "insolence to the gods" or something similiar ONLY in English dictionaries, and the references are all 20th century.

There is nothing remotely comparable in Greek dictionaries (although I didn't consult MODERN Greek dictionaries.)

Here is a passage from Sophocles' Ajax:

Quote:

Athena: Loook, then, at such things, and never yourself utter an arrogant word against the gods, nor assume conceit because you outweigh another in strength or in profusion of great wealth. Know that a single day brings down or raises up again all mortal things,, and the gods love those who think sensibly and detest offenders!

That's translated from a Greek passage that does not use the word hubris. If it shared that meaning alluded to before with the English language, this is a passage where you would expect to see it.

I'm not sure what to say, other than I'm not sure we're on the same page. I cannot find a definitive source that says, "Yes, Hubris was a word in ancient Greek," but I find numerous references to the greek word Υβρις, which is Greek for hubris apparently.

I find it difficult to believe that the word is not a Greek word considering there was a Greek goddess called Hubris/Hybris, who was according to multiple sources the embodiment of insolence and lack of restraint.

Given the history of etymology in English dictionaries, I find it extremely difficult to belive that they are all wrong when they say that the word hubris does not have Greek roots and that it is merely a 20th centruy misconception that the word hubris as a Greek word is a myth.

But it would certainly be hubris for me to suggest that with any absolute certainty.

It was a Greek word. What I'm saying is that the meaning it has picked up in English (which I could find no evidence it meant anything other than 'rude, snotty' prior to about 1900) is not there in the way it was used in Greek. If you look through Greek texts carefully (perseus project might be useful if you want to spend some time on this - www.perseus.tufts.edu ) you will quickly realize this.

The Greeks said 'hubris' (which you spelled correctly with greek characters, Υβρις, pronounced the same in both languages) most typically meant 'violent.'

st.cronin 03-01-2006 07:30 PM

dola

If I had to guess how it picked up the meaning 'pride, insolence to God,' I would say it had to do with Christian thinkers imposing their values on the Greek texts - trying to add something that wasn't there. The rage of Achilles was not directed at God/Gods - it was directed at his fellow men.

I agree, though I think that the running discussion of the meaning of words in ancient Greek has been an underrated part of this thread. I take part of the blame for yesterday--I tried to force the hot cartoon woman draft in the middle of the thread, and that did not pan out. I think that you have to just let the thread come to you--you can't force it.

That said, I'm glad to know that I am not the only person who thinks of little blue creatures whenever rkmsuf posts.

I'm guessing, but it's probably because he wrote in in DirectX8, and some of the older video cards don't have the capabilities/drivers to support some of the features in DirectX8. It really doesn't matter how many animations he has, if the beer tent uses some new T&L features from DirectX it'll probably cause a problem on older machines.

How about throwing some crayons in the case so you can color in the dvd front? I want female and Area 51 alien player animations. Where's my Johnny Rico Flip 6 3 hole play? How about Black Sunday blimps that terrorize your players? I want my running back to pull out a gun, run down the sidelines, capping players in the knee caps and ultimately blow his head off when surrounded.. Thats what I want..

If you are customizin'.. you are tryin'...

The 6600 is not a "powerful" card. It's more the standard run-of-the-mill "get this if you are buying a new video card today and want a good fast card without breakign the bank" video card. That advice wasn't saying "you need at least this card to run Maximum Football" but rather "you want this card if you're buying a new video card / computer and want to play 3D games on it".

(I can't believe I've been forced to step up and defend Matrix twice because people are LOOKING for bad things to say about the game and aren't reading what Matrix is actually SAYING).

I will be posting a brand new release info thread later today. We're having a conference at the moment to make a final decision on the release based on testing. Things continue to look good and I anticipate we will release tomorrow morning, to give it one more day of final testing, but I encourage you to wait for the final announcement on that later today. You all know the drill at this point - if something new and critical pops up, it will be delayed again. However, nothing like that has popped up so far, so we are keeping our fingers crossed and thinking the last build will be the new final gold master for release.

Locking this thread at this point, I'll post a new one later today.

Regards,

- Erik

I think Antmeister should have done a parody song of Annie's "tomorrow, tomorrow"

Passacaglia 03-02-2006 12:23 PM

At this point, why do they even bother posting updates? They're not saying anything significant anyway, and nobody really expects the game to be out on any given day.

A thought just occured to me:

If this game wanted to be truly customizable and worth purchasing, Daivd should have made a simple scripting language (or used Python) to allow modders to fully customize rulesets. It'd allow you to do crazy shit; it'd allow almost any action in the game to affect the score, number of timeouts, or anything else (number of players on the field?). That would be real customizability and flexibility. What Daivd's doing is a complete and utter joke compared to that.

cartman 03-02-2006 01:13 PM

To the tune of the Beatles' "Yesterday"

Yesterday, the game release seemed so far away
Now it looks as though we're about to play
Oh, I can't wait for yesterday.

Suddenly, I'm not seeing InstallShield in front of me,
Gained 5 on 2nd and 10, now it's 3rd and 3.
Oh, beta testing came suddenly.

Why the release won't go, I don't know, they couldn't say.
I post something wrong, now I long for yesterday.

Yesterday, football was such an easy game to play.
Now I need a place to post away.
Oh, I believe in yesterday.

Well, basic things like onside kicks, fake kicks and options "break" the AI, so I would guess anything that customizable would vaporize the AI.

That's a testament to the Beatles, I guess; I heard the Billy Dean version of this song. When a semi-obscure country artist is covering your stuff, that says what kind of an impact you've had across the breadth of music.

Nevermind.

I'm an idiot.

The CFL has 12 players on the field at a time.

I know we have people going over the video right now like the Zapruder film--but I don't think that you will find anything. After the last video, I think that they went over this one with a fined toothed comb before releasing it to the public.

I believe it is themost covered song of all time.

FWIW, I wasn't looking for problems..

I just looked at the lineups and said "that sure seems like a lot of people on the field"...

And I was right, but it wasn't NFL rules ;)...

albionmoonlight 03-02-2006 02:27 PM

Of course, whether you should--as a matter of good PR--review the materials that you are putting on the web in order to generate interest in your product is an exercise that I will leave for the reader.

Personally, I think that it should be the rule and not the exception.

I can't watch the video from work...does the TE fall down at the beginning of every run play again?

JeeberD 03-02-2006 02:34 PM

Alas, there is no gameplay footage, Bee. It's just showing league setup screens...

Nah, it just shows menu screens and formation screens. No in-game action in this one.

Bee 03-02-2006 02:41 PM

ahh...ok, thanks.

Of course if you allowed such heavy customizability of rules, you'd also encourage AI coders to work on custom AIs to complement the rules.

It'd be really hard, though. I definitely would NOT want to try to code a game that tried to do what i'm suggesting AND have 3d graphics.

When he's scrolling through the roster of Toronto in the video, all of the Offensive Line have either 59 or 60 speed and te QBs have 70ish speed. They're fast sons o' bitches compared to the HBs who all have 80ish speed. The ratings in general also seem to be artificially bloated like madden's.

Training camp looks good, though. I like how simple it appears.

The offense appearantly only has 4 formations. Weird.

I wonder if that's the number of members for all of the entire Matrix boards. Still, that's a lot of damn users...
They do a good job managing the forums and to be honest I'm a tad jealous that they appear to be able to have someone monitor it full-time (well during office hours at least) ....

PS> The jungle that is the sigames.com forums currently have over 100,000 users - we police the jungle to the best of our ability, however there are lawless areas and users enter at their own risk ;)

I have to admit I like the look of the interface. Uncluttered, consistent, appears to be easy to navigate. Doesn't look like things like stat/ratings columns are sortable, though.

OTF is policed? That's like the red zone area that pizza delivery refuses to go to.

Gotta agree with st.cronin on this one.

However, it would have taken a big step towards completion if Marc had told us that "Maximum Football" was a name that they had copyrighted as a potential name when they couldn't use Championship Manager anymore.

:D

I agree. Like most everyone here, I hope that the game is good. Movies like this are nice to see in that regard.

st.cronin 03-02-2006 05:03 PM

This thread can't be complete. I haven't once mentioned the quarterback for my favorite football team, and I don't think we've seen a picture of Pumpy yet.

Desnudo 03-02-2006 05:07 PM

We are only two pages away from 50 too. Up over Heartbreak Hill people!

The game'll come out
Tomorrow
Bet your bottom dollar
That tomorrow
There'll be bugs!

Just thinkin' about
Tomorrow
Clears away the hard drive,
And the defect list
'Til there's none!

When I'm stuck a play
That's grey,
And phony,
I hike it to my tight end
And Grin,
And Say,
Oh!

The game'll come out
Tomorrow
So ya gotta hang on
'Til tomorrow
Third and negative 8 you say
Tomorrow! Tomorrow!
I'll release ya Tomorrow!
You're always
A day
A way!
