The U.S. seems to get goalies (besides Hiller) off their game.

Nice move by Wilson to put Thomas in.

MIJB#19 02-26-2010 04:37 PM

The USA are on a roll today, apparently. In speed skating the team pursuit teams both pulled an upset, beating the heavily favored Canadian women and Dutch men.

In other news, Nicolien Sauerbreij is the first ever dutch medal winner without skates. :D

So Canada and the US were dominant. I remember the US getting the bronze at the last Olympics. I also seem to remember many other countries dominating specific sports for a long length of time.

Germany has won 60% of all medals in the luge. Norway and Finland had won over 50% of the total medals in Nordic combined before these Olympics. Ski Jumping? It's all about Austria, Norway and Finland.

Canada won 6 of the first 7 hockey golds in mens hockey. Then Russian won gold in 7 of the next 9 Olympics. Leave the damned thing along. . . it'll get competitive if you give it time. In the meantime, you have one hell of a good rivalry to lean on until others catch up.

If you go to the Summer Games, then you get into the really one sided stuff. For some reason, table tennis is an Olympic Event. China and South Korea have 23 of the 24 gold medals handed out since 1988, They have 58 of the 76 medals.

The only reason some of these individual events are competitive is because 1-3 countries bring multiple teams. Everyone else sends a qualifier for forms sake. Fine. The Canadians and Americans will send 3 women's teams each next time, and the other 6 slots can go to the rest of the world. It'll look more competitive that way.

By upsetting the Dutch the US will at worst tie their previous best for most medals in a Winter Olympics. They won 34 medals in Salt Lake, right now the count is 32 and it's either gold or silver to come in both men's hockey and men's speed skating team pursuit.

Can Germany still catch us in total medals?

I'll put my spoiler tags since I'm counting stuff that happened today that NBC will likely show tonight...

Spoiler

whomario 02-26-2010 05:23 PM

Iīd prefer a counting of Gold x 3, Silver x 2 and Bronze x 1 or sth along those lines, similar to how itīs done all season long in world cup competition (well, there first gets 100 and 30th 1 for example, but you get the picture).

whomario 02-26-2010 07:02 PM

anybody saw the 4 men bobsled ? That track really borders on insanity, just unbelievable scenes in that 2nd heat ... Whoever approved that ought to be tied onto a luge/sled and be sent down a couple times himself right now ...

I believe that was the original route for the luge competition.

MJ4H 02-26-2010 07:05 PM

Good grief did anyone see that epic fail by Sweden in women's curling?

yeah it was. They canīt move the bobsled-start whereas you have a bit of flexibility to go down for the luge/skeleton.

sterlingice 02-26-2010 07:47 PM

No! Canada! :(

Wow- hopefully Bernard can pull it out in extra ends

SI

Celeval 02-26-2010 07:49 PM

Wow, that was a huge swing. I thought Canada had it in the bag.

MJ4H 02-26-2010 08:08 PM

Fantastic match. Great comeback by Sweden when it looked like they were out of it.

Celeval 02-26-2010 08:09 PM

Can't help but feel Canada blew that - they should have won it in the 10th, and had a chance in the 11th (but that was a tough shot).

Big Fo 02-26-2010 08:14 PM

Well played Sweden, glad to see them win it.

sterlingice 02-26-2010 08:14 PM

Yeah, that was just a brutal loss for Canada and a great finish by Sweden

SI

MJ4H 02-26-2010 08:15 PM

Yeah looked like Canada had it wrapped up about twice in that one. Think Bernard choked. She is still a MILF.

Big Fo 02-26-2010 08:21 PM

Some Korean threatened to bomb the Australian embassy due to their DQ from the women's relay (referee is an Aussie). Get over it you fucks.

Galaxy 02-26-2010 08:22 PM

If Canada loses to Slovakia (a team that has plenty of talent), does it kill the hype and excitement for the gold medal game in the U.S.?

Big Fo 02-26-2010 08:23 PM

I don't think so. We like to see our people with a chance of winning gold no matter who the opponent is.

Personally I'd much rather have Slovakia win tonight.

JonInMiddleGA 02-26-2010 08:24 PM

If this has already been posted forgive me (wait for the connection to this thread at the end if you haven't seen it already)

Was talking about this with a friend today. I want to play Canada. If we lose, a silver is a nice consolation for a team that wasn't expected to medal, especially knowing that better things could be ahead for the team if everyone plays in 4 years. But being able to take the gold from Canada on their home ice would be very special, like what they did to us in 2002 but with even more meaning.

cartman 02-26-2010 08:28 PM

How much better could that be? None more better.

Same here. I figured we already beat Canada. :)

jbergey22 02-26-2010 08:57 PM

This short track racing is so awesome. Other than the hockey this has been the highlight of the Olympics for me.

Same here. This has been the only must watch event for me besides USA hockey.

My son kind of wondered about the upselling of it by Costas earlier tonight (as I wandered through the den that my wife has turned into Olympic central) and I explained that short-track speed skating was kind of like a green-white-checker finish at Bristol Motor Speedway.

Few minutes later there's the pileup in the quarterfinal & my analogy made perfect sense :)

Yeah they fucking pathetic. I remember the Ohno thing in SLC they were threatening the guy's life openly all over the place. Geez they sure missed the point of the Olympics.

Galaxy 02-26-2010 09:23 PM

Did Apollo just knock down two guys?

Eaglesfan27 02-26-2010 09:23 PM

I wonder if Ohno gets disqualified for that first guy that went down.

Big Fo 02-26-2010 09:24 PM

Ohno might have knocked down one. The guy who was in second fell on his own maybe.

Eaglesfan27 02-26-2010 09:26 PM

Seems like a fair call.

Big Fo 02-26-2010 09:29 PM

I dunno, that wasn't much contact watching it again. Harsh on Ohno maybe. And the Korean who got silver without finishing the race either fell on his own or was touched by Hamelin, who was not DQ'd, winning gold. Kind of a weird sport with shady judging really even though it is fun to watch.

cartman 02-26-2010 09:31 PM

I didn't see any push from Ohno, but I guess anything that might knock you off the line in the sport is frowned upon.

I thought the Korean slid across the line after he fell? Rewinding it to watch it again. Yeah, he slid across the line 3rd behind Ohno and he was in 2nd when he fell.

Galaxy 02-26-2010 09:52 PM

Looking like the US will play Canada for the gold. 3-0 Canada going into the 3rd.

The bronze should be a good game.

Eaglesfan27 02-26-2010 10:02 PM

Nice race by Katherine Reutter.

That silver (plus the two guaranteed gold or silvers mentioned earlier) means the US will finish with more medals than they won at any previous Winter Olympics. At least 35. Germany holds the all-time record with 36 in a Winter Olympics. So c'mon USA, get one in this short-track relay.

That explains the Korean silver at least. I still think the DQ was iffy.

Apparently Ohno said the ref being Canadian might have had something to do with it? I'd switched over to hockey after the race.

Eaglesfan27 02-26-2010 10:14 PM

Yes, he did say that in the post race interview. He kind of laughed when he said it.

Galaxy 02-26-2010 10:19 PM

Did the Korea guy hold up Apollo at the end with his arm out?

EagleFan 02-26-2010 10:29 PM

Okay, how freaking funny would a Slovakia comeback be after the fans were chanting "We Want USA"?

EagleFan 02-26-2010 10:33 PM

Uh oh... eh :)
