Gotta take issue with two of the covers b/c I think the original should be somewhat successful and neither Nothing Compares... or I Love Rock and Roll... were that.

I think of great Cover as exactly the opposite of that....a great cover obscures the original in my mind...it's so distinctively the covering artist's song that the general public doesn't even know that there was an original.

Not in a long time. Besides, I just googled 'greatest wedding songs' and on the first several lists or CDs that came up, the song wasn't on any of them.

I'm right in the middle of this. I think the important thing is that the "cover" be of high quality. Whether the original is superior or inferior makes no difference in my judgement.

Lathum 02-24-2007 07:11 PM

Weird, I just googled greatest love songs and it was on the first list I found

Yeah, way down on the list below Billy Joel. :) You would think a great love song would also be on a great wedding song list.

I agree as long as the original was a legit song on its own before the cover came along...I guess they qualify since they were recorded but didn't really get a lot of love...either way I see your point.

Hendrix pick is the bust of the draft... I think there are better choices for him for classic but he probably should have been used for cover where I think he would have owned the category (Watchtower or Star Spangled Banner). Also a little surprised by the use of Who for Baba O'Reily. Its an amazing song, but I'm not sure enough people will recognize it by name compared to some of their other stuff.

As much as you can argue for other Hendrix songs, I don't think anything is worse than "Image" as a love song. :)

I think that Gary Glitter goof is the "reach" of the draft. There's a couple of other songs that are weak, as well, but considering the options that were open the arena category, that pick was just insane.

Subby 02-24-2007 07:38 PM

Epic category easily has the most whiffs, I think...

True... that one deserves a huge penalty for Bucc, but I bet most people will ignore the categories when they vote.

Crossover Hit

1.8 - Walk This Way, Run-D.M.C. feat. Aerosmith - lordscarlet
3.5 - Ring of Fire, Johnny Cash - Maple Leafs
4.5 - I Can't Stop Loving You, Ray Charles - ntndeacon
4.7 - Superstition, Stevie Wonder - Butter_of_69
6.8 - Lose Yourself, Eminem - NoMyths
9.1 - The Devil Went Down to Georgia, Charlie Daniels Band - Subby

10.2 - Ode to Billie Joe, Bobbie Gentry - Buccaneer
10.4 - On The Road Again, Willie Nelson - vtbub
10.9 - Lathum

Buccaneer 02-24-2007 07:52 PM

There was a song I wanted to put in under Epic but I wondered what you guys thought. I'll wait until we're done to ask.

Maple Leafs 02-24-2007 08:50 PM

I took my all-time favorite band with my first pick, so I might as well take my second favorite with my last pick.

This one may not have the instant recognition factor of the others... I suspect you had to be young in the early 90s to really get it. I remember going to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in like 1997 when they had a display on youth anthems from each decade, and this song was #2 behind Smell Like Teen Spirit for the 90s. I'm not sure it's held up all that well over time, but it still kicks ass and was also the breakout hit for one of the most critically acclaimed acts of the last 15 years.

And besides, as Rage Against the Machine would later demonstrate to perfection, nothing really makes a great anti-establishment song like a course you can chant at the top of your lungs when you're drunk.

Bow down before the one you serve, you're going to get what you deserve...

Classic - 8.6 - What a Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong
Epic - 5.5 - Thriller - Michael Jackson
Arena - 1.7 - Welcome to the Jungle - Guns N' Roses
Trendsetter - 2.4 - Heartbreak Hotel - Elvis Presley
Love Song - 6.6 Unchained Melody - The Righteous Brothers
One-Hit Wonder - 9.5 - 99 Luftballons - Nena
Party - 4.6 - 1999 - Prince
Crossover - 3.5 - Ring of Fire - Johnny Cash
Cover - 7.5 - Burning Down the House - Tom Jones & The Cardigans
Anti-Establishment - 10.5 - Head Like a Hole - Nine Inch Nails

Maple Leafs 02-24-2007 08:52 PM

Butter_of_69's choice

Classic - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John - 9.4
Epic - Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen, 1.4
Arena - Rock and Roll (Part Two) - Gary Glitter, 3.4
Trendsetter - Heart of Glass - Blondie - 8.7
Love Song - My Girl - The Temptations, 6.7
One-Hit Wonder - Take On Me - a-ha - 10.7
Party - Celebration - Kool and the Gang, 5.4
Crossover - Superstition - Stevie Wonder, 4.7
Killing Me Softly - The Fugees - Cover, 7.4
Anti-Establishment - Anarchy in the UK - Sex Pistols, 2.7

st.cronin 02-24-2007 08:53 PM

Not a bad song, but I'm baffled by how it fits the category.

NoMyths 02-24-2007 09:17 PM

What do I like best about my final pick, for Party song? The most famous simile in at least the last fifteen years worth of music? The crossover appeal? The fact that it's an eminently enjoyable tune? Or the fact that unlike most songs that are associated with parties, this one wouldn't be banned on my iPod (Exhibit A: Celebration. Brrrrr). Since my explanations haven't really meant much thus far, I suppose I'm just entertaining myself at this point...but at least I've got a great playlist to pass the time, topped off by this raucous burst of energy:

Classic - 1.3 - Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan
Epic - 3.3 - The End - The Doors
Arena - 4.8 - Where the Streets Have No Name - U2
Trendsetter - 2.8 - Respect - Aretha Franklin
Love Song - 7.3 - Can't Get Enough of Your Love Babe - Barry White
One-Hit Wonder - 8.8 - God Bless the U.S.A. (I'm Proud To Be An American) - Lee Greenwood
Party - 10-8 - Hey Ya - OutKast
Crossover - 6.8 - Lose Yourself - Eminem
Cover - 9.3 - Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinead O'Connor
Anti-Establishment - 5.3 - Fortunate Son - Creedence Clearwater Revival

Lathum 02-24-2007 09:21 PM

I think you all will be happy that I am broadining my horizons with this pick. It was one of the first songs that combined rap with hard core metal. SLAM by ONYX and BIOHAZARD

Classic -Foxy Lady- Jimi Hendrix- 3.2
Epic - BaBa O'reilly ( also known as teenage wasteland)- The Who - 2.9
Arena - Iron Man- Black Sabbath- 6.9
Trendsetter - Smells Like Teen Spirit- Nirvana- 1.2
Love Song - At Last- Eda James - 4.9 ( heard at every wedding)
One-Hit Wonder - Four Non Blondes - Whats Going On? - 9.2
Party - One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer - George Thorogood - 7.2
Crossover - Slam-Onyx and Biohazard-10.9
Cover - A little help from my friends - Joe Cocker - 8.9
Anti-Establishment -American Idiot-Green Day 5.2

KevinNU7 02-24-2007 09:44 PM

My picks are avoiding the selection of the 100+ artists already selected.

KevinNU7 02-24-2007 10:09 PM

Imagine my picks as some who in the previous year had traded all their picks away for Ricky Williams and then he was thrown off the team so I had to build a team from undrafted players

I have never played FOF so I'm not sure what that means. Just imagine that I have every pick in Round 11.

adubroff 02-24-2007 10:24 PM

Yeah, it's the old Island of Misfit Toys concept...I am gonna try a list myself too so it will be interesting to see where we overlap if at all...I think there's a lot of good choices left...

ntndeacon 02-24-2007 10:24 PM

you will have some good people to choose from, Kevin

KevinNU7 02-24-2007 10:30 PM

I'm looking forward to revealing. I think it's better then a few of the 10 competitors.
