Amen. It's allergy season in southern Indiana. You can see the pollen float through the air. Of course this happens during one of the most pleasant months weather wise. Once the pollen settles down, the high humidity and temperatures will settle in.

Hallstatt, Austria

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hallstatt

flere-imsaho 05-05-2014 09:09 AM

I've been to Hallstatt. Just a fantastic trip. If you take the train (and you should - it's beautiful) the train station is on the other side of the lake, so you take a boat over (I think the reason for this is that the mountains are so steep you can have the road on one side of the valley and the train on the other side, but not both).

If you like to hike, it's heaven. I stayed 3 days, and did a different 8 hour hike each day.

I think the starting point is probably the throwing of the shovel. I mean, as effective use of a weapon goes, that's high quality stupidity right there.

And, based on several articles I read when trying to figure out the source of the Vine, there was discussion of ground rules prior to the fight. It's not like one of them Pearl Harbored the other or something.

It's kind of the white girl version of the Sharkeisha video, except with less sneak attack.

ColtCrazy 05-05-2014 09:35 PM

Perhaps it's because this could have easily happened right around here.

FWIW, I don't think it's possible to have a better breakdown of a shovel fight than that. :D

For the most part, but I was pretty surprised to see more applications to Marquette when it has about a quarter of the enrollment that Madison does.

Right, which is why larger undergraduate enrollments will have a built-in advantage. Larger enrollment = more spots = more people applying, particularly since Large Public U can often be a safety school for those with higher aspirations, or the name recognition of those schools makes it a more popular choice.

Marquette as the most applicants in Wisconsin shocks me. Washington University in Missouri is a little surprising as well, but I seem to vaguely recall that it has a pretty decent general national reputation with not as strict admissions standards as other elite schools... but I might also be thinking of the wrong Midwestern Washington University.

What? I wasn't criticizing the map - only pointing out why some of the results may seem surprising at first, such as UCF in Florida, but taking the above factor into account makes the result perfectly logical. Granted, that's not an absolute rule - see Marquette beating out Madison in Wisconsin - but it does in general advantage the larger undergraduate enrollment schools.

Washington University surprised me because it is fairly prestigious. They have more than 70,000 applications. They have almost as many postgrads and as undergrads. Maybe it is a bit of a "safety school" for the Ivy League crowd. It also has a strong international student body, so I'm wondering how many of those applicants are international students just hoping for a slot.

But those number of applications are off the hook.

Are you counting post-grad applications in that? I ask because their own webpage lists "1,488 freshmen were selected from 28,823 applicants".

As Wiki notes, they are also the subject of criticism due to their intensive marketing campaign which is apparently intended to drive up applications in order to drive up their ranking in several of the various systems.

Probably faulty math on my part. I read they have a 17% acceptance rate and calculated the application number based on the entire student body, which is erroneous because it should only be based on freshmen and new grad students. 28,000 is still a pretty good number, and I'm sure would but them ahead of Missouri-Columbia.

The marketing campaign criticism wouldn't surprise me either. Good way to game the system to make you look like a more Elitist Richard. :)

Hmong American - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hmong Americans are Americans of ethnic Hmong descent. Hmong Americans are one group of Asian Americans. Many Lao Hmong war refugees resettled in the U.S. following the communist takeover of Laos in 1975. Beginning in December of that year, the first Hmong refugees arrived in the U.S., mainly from refugee camps in Thailand; however, only 3,466 were granted asylum at this time under the Refugee Assistance Act of 1975.

There are fairly sizable Hmong and Somali refugee/immigrant populations the Twin Cities area.

I was not at all surprised that Italian was #3 for New Jersey. There are a few Korean communities in New Jersey, but I was surprised to see two states with Korean as their third most spoken language.

And FWIW, Louisiana, Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire had French as #2 ahead of Spanish, North Dakota's #2 is German, Hawaii's #2 is Tagalog and Alaska's #2 is Yupik. The rest of the states had Spanish as their #2 language.

Vince, Pt. II 05-14-2014 02:33 AM

I'm floored that German is so prevalent.
