I'm interested to see what you thought were better epics... I'm by no means a music expert, far from it...

I would however, think of at least 5 or 10 songs that to me are better values for Classics.. anyway... interested to see how it plays out...

NoMyths 02-22-2007 09:57 AM

I am not unhappy to see Stairway off the board. I'm not sure I would have made it my #1 classic. And maybe not even my #1 from Zeppelin.

Yeah yeah - we know you will pick like five Elliott Smith and two Tom Waits songs just to show us HOW AWESOME YOU ARE!!:mad::mad:

Maple Leafs 02-22-2007 10:04 AM

Stairway is probably a worthy top pick.

Lathum is on the clock with pick #1.2. I'll give him an hour to make a pick, otherwise I'll use the one he originally sent.

DOH! Quit giving away my draft list!!!1

NoMyths 02-22-2007 10:06 AM

dola...

And Lathum better not steal Lou Reed's Metal Machine Music from me...

Lathum 02-22-2007 10:08 AM

Classic -
Epic -
Arena -
Trendsetter - Smells Like Teen Spirit- Nirvana- 1.2
Love Song -
One-Hit Wonder -
Party -
Crossover -
Cover -
Anti-Establishment -

Lathum 02-22-2007 10:09 AM

I can't think of a song that changed a generation of music more. I almost went with the thong song, it was a tough choice.

NoMyths 02-22-2007 10:10 AM

Dang, sorta. On the other hand...

Agreed, but it was not on my list as #1 trendsetter.

Maple Leafs 02-22-2007 10:23 AM

NoMyths, you know you're up, right?

KevinNU7 02-22-2007 10:23 AM

I love this thread. I wish I was participating

NoMyths 02-22-2007 10:24 AM

A hard, hard thing to choose between by top picks. At the end of the day, I had to go with the American iconoclast, who probably stands as the most important musician the country has produced. This is his greatest achievement.

Classic - Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan - 1.3
Epic -
Arena -
Trendsetter -
Love Song -
One-Hit Wonder -
Party -
Crossover -
Cover -
Anti-Establishment -

Damn, give a brotha half an hour! ;)

I'm at work.

Maple Leafs 02-22-2007 10:26 AM

Butter_of_69 is on the clock at 1.4.

I'll give him a little while to make a pick. However, the pick he sent is so strong that I don't mind making it for him if he's not around soon.

wade moore 02-22-2007 10:27 AM

I have to say that I think you put Dylan on a much higher pedestal than many others.

I'm unbothered by where I put Dylan in any discussion with folks who know much about music. ;)

Not that you shouldn't, but you probably could've held that pick for a couple rounds.

albionmoonlight 02-22-2007 10:29 AM

My #1 is now starting to fidget a bit in its suit in the green room.

This is where Maple Leafs comment about "knowing too much" about music could hurt you in this game comes into play.

Maple Leafs 02-22-2007 10:30 AM

Incidentally, I think Stairway to Heaven was in over half of the "top three" submissions I got.

KevinNU7 02-22-2007 10:30 AM

I'm curious how the scoring will work. Will you do 10 points for Top votes in a category followed by 9 for 2nd, ect... or will it just be a contest to see who can get the most Top vote categories?

How to win:
The fun here comes more from the draft itself than from actually winning, but just in case it matters: Once the draft is done, we'll hold a vote and let FOFC choose the winner. FOFC will pick someone shitty. They always do.

It's just a straight-up poll thread. The lists are shown and then the masses get to decide who has the best "team".

In the past we just did a poll. But I suspect that when the draft is over I'll consider various scoring methods, and go with whichever one gives me the best chance to win.

In English:

Whoever picks G'N'R.

KevinNU7 02-22-2007 10:39 AM

Mel how do you feel about the first three picks so far.

1 and 2 went right where I felt they could go. These songs are solid choices in their categories and if a team has a need at that position they are clear selections. Pick 3 for Like a Rolling Stone really blows me away. I had this one in the mid to late rounds and I'm baffelled. This pick will not sit well with the mainstream fans.

I have to agree, you can hear those Giants fans booing already.

Maple Leafs 02-22-2007 10:39 AM

I'll make Butter's pick at noon EST (20 minutes).

Up next, as of now:
1.4 Butter
1.5 Leafs
1.6 Deacon
1.7 vtbub

NoMyths 02-22-2007 10:58 AM

I'm surprised that folks are shocked by Like a Rolling Stone. I suppose I'll pick Chumbawumba's "Tubthumper" next. :P

Me too, actually. I wouldn't have it ranked at #1.3 but I think the odds of it still being there for your second round pick was less than 50/50.

KevinNU7 02-22-2007 11:01 AM

My problem is that Stairway is already a better selection for that category. There are 8 categories that haven't been opened yet, you should have gone for the best in that category first.

KevinNU7 02-22-2007 11:04 AM

Well after butter picks it looks like we will get through the others quickly as Leafs, deacon and vtbub are all online right now

My thought process was also along the lines of defining songs...while there are plenty of bands who have a ton of great songs still on the board, I can see the vote being split over folks who feel the choice of Great Band's Song X over Song Y is terrible. Taking Dylan off the board with LARS -- aside from it is being of the greatest songs ever written and a trendsetter -- avoids that argument somewhat.

No risks = no rewards. Though I'm truly baffled that this pick is seen as risky. I'd have not been surprised to see the song go #1 overall, and would have taken it there myself.

Maple Leafs 02-22-2007 11:04 AM

Here's Butter's selection.... I love this pick.

Classic -
Epic - 1.4 - Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
Arena -
Trendsetter -
Love Song -
One-Hit Wonder -
Party -
Crossover -
Cover -
Anti-Establishment -

Strategerie, my friend. I have other controversial picks for those categories lined up. ;)

Maple Leafs 02-22-2007 11:05 AM

Trade alert

vtbub and I have swapped picks in the first and second rounds. He gets picks 1.5 and 2.6, I get picks 1.7 and 2.4.

vtbub is on the clock at 1.5

MikeVic 02-22-2007 11:05 AM

Butter's pick would have been my #1 if I was in this thing.

KevinNU7 02-22-2007 11:05 AM

unbeatable...

wade moore 02-22-2007 11:06 AM

Interesting... not even my top Queen pick... I think I would have thrown "We are the Champions or "We Will Rock You" as Arena rock over this one here.

Lathum 02-22-2007 11:06 AM

I almost picked that one

The more I think about this, the more I think Butter was smarter with Queen than I would have been ;).

That was my 1-1 pick (if I had one). Good choice. :D

Epic -
Arena -
Trendsetter -
Love Song -
One-Hit Wonder -

The most covered song in the world is my classic pick.

There are tons of Arena songs to chose from, I can think of many many songs out there that would be ahead of either of those.

You're kidding, right? Dylan is probably the greatest artist in American music (hell, music) of the last 50 years.

Bob Dylan appears to be the Vince Young of this draft.

Perhaps for music buffs.

For the general public, I don't think that you'd get a strong vote for Dylan. That's all I'm sayin'.
