My first "This level looks very dangerous" at 450'. I'm guessing it was the damned red ants that kept sapping my strength, leaving me at 12. :( Or perhaps its the nifty Ring of Damage (+75%) I found on that level. :)

Malificent 04-11-2009 12:43 AM

That's the only thing about the current set of options I miss. I usually run on preserve mode - so if you have an artifact on level, you get the "special feeling" message and you keep plugging away at the dungeon until you find that artifact. :)

Tasan 04-11-2009 02:16 AM

Well I got back to level 12, and down to 450'. I fought a REAL tough named baddie at 400', can't remember the name right now, but I had to keep coming back and whacking, then blinking away and resting til the deed was done. He had a fear touch as well that made things slower, because onced 'feared', I couldn't fight either. Hoping to delve deeper tomorrow.

Thomkal 04-11-2009 10:57 AM

Fell through a trap door on another "very dangerous" level on my return to the dungeon-I think it was for a jelly pit, but at least I had explored most of the level before I hit the trap. :(

Thomkal 04-11-2009 11:18 AM

Well so much for being an "expert" Angband player. :( Got to level 14, decided to try one of the quests, clear out a band of wizards. Wasn't expecting to land right in the middle of them with no stairs going up. Ported a couple times into the midst of even more, then got blinded and something kept hitting me draining my strength, was able to move to one square of stairs before what I assume was a Tengu ported me away.

Guess it's time for DuinathIII.

Sporkimata 04-11-2009 01:09 PM

I have made it to level 13 now. Balo has given me three different chaos weapons. Been a real boon to sell and buy more equipment. He did however give me a wasting disease, how kind.

Malificent 04-11-2009 01:29 PM

Random note: I may never get rid of my current weapon. The stats:

Broad Sword (2d5) (Holy Avenger) (+9, +45%) [+4] (+3 attacks)

It increases your wisdom by 3. It is especially deadly against demons, the undead, and evil monsters. It sustains your dexterity. It provides resistance to fear. It allows you to see invisible monsters. It has been blessed by the gods. It provides protection from demons, the undead, and evil monsters. It was in a chest at 700'.

If I could get some more damage on that puppy, I may take it all the way to the bottom (assuming I don't die a painful death first).

Thomkal 04-11-2009 02:15 PM

Well Balo apparantly felt bad for me losing my first two characters like that, or thought I was so pathetic I needed a boost from him to survive, so upon reaching level 2 he dropped two things for me. A Ball and Chain of Slay Undead (+8, +20%) and a Leather Scale Mail (11, +1). Then he raised all my stats the next level. Then he ignored me, then he raised my stats again, such a fickle patron. Then he gave me my first mutation-I receive warnings about my foes, whatever that means and I picked up a beastman mutation-detect monsters. Then he gave me the light up area mutation. He must have felt very bad/thought I was very pathetic with all these good gifts.

Thomkal 04-11-2009 02:19 PM

Sweet sword there Mali!

JAG 04-11-2009 05:44 PM

Level 20 now and starting to improve statwise, thanks to a patron gift boost. Finally found a piece of eq. with see invisible and starting to feel pretty decent.

Malificent 04-11-2009 07:09 PM

So my ridiculously epic struggle today:

I discover the town of Ninkib, which is near the east wall of the wilderness, almost parallel with Zathdin View. So I immediately check out their quests. The first one was a quick "destroy the evil elves in their lair" - limited size lair and easy monsters for my level (26 at the time). The next quest they offer up is a danger level 34 - "rid the nearby area of venomous insects". Well, it's higher than I would normally do, but my stats are well guarded, so I might be able to kill these insects easier.

I go there, and it is a full dungeon level and I almost immediately stumble into the biggest room in the dungeon - this room is maybe 1/8th the size of the entire dungeon and it is filled with:

A) Traps, traps, and more traps
B) Mirkwood spiders
C) Mi-gos
D) Phase spiders

Mi-gos and phase spiders may be the most irritating low danger monsters in the entire game. Phase spiders can blink away and then either blink you away or blink you to them. Now imagine approximately 100 phase spiders in a room, where you are being blinked back and forth endlessly. Not dangerous, but you are often ready to shoot someone.

Then add mi-gos. They summon. Often. And a lot. And they summon from the Chaos Courts, which means they often summon Tengus...who can also summon. It takes me 1.5 hours real time to clear that room. Then I move on to another room about half the size of that has alternating rock walls and is full of more of the same. And as a bonus, when I would get near the right wall, a phase spider would end up blinking me to a room 50 ft away...and I'd have to go the long way around to get back. So an hour into that, and I'm almost done...

...when my shifting mutation goes off and the entire level resets. Gack! So I go back to town, stock up on Alchemy and Identify scrolls and then descend back in and 2.5 hours and 3 levels later, I manage to clear the whole thing and never want to see another freaking phase spider again.

JAG 04-11-2009 08:05 PM

lol, good read, thanks for sharing.

Thomkal 04-11-2009 08:28 PM

oh my Mali, get rid of that shifting mutation!

Is it possible to get rid of mutations? I mean, the shifting one is irritating, but it has been useful on occasion - normally if I shift during a quest level, it is a small level, and I know exactly what I'm doing, and since quests aren't random, I get duplicate items. But I think I would probably be better off ditching it if I could.

Godzilla Blitz 04-11-2009 11:31 PM

What a fun game! I messed around with this for an hour tonight. I started the Duinith file and took him into the dungeon for the first time. Pretty standard fare for enemies, and I had little trouble crushing the various bugs and kobolds that tried to defy my descent to greatness.

Balo cured some of my wounds when I advanced to Level 2. At Level 3, he bumped me right up to Level 4 and tossed a neat cloak, axe, and light crossbow at my feet. (I'm guessing this stuff is decent because it has all sorts of pluses after the descriptions.) When I hit Level 5, he tossed me a Tanto of yet undetermined strength. At this point I was thinking you all are crazy about his fickleness. What an awesome god!

Then he promptly slapped me with Rotting Disease, which I'm guessing is the cause of my now lowered Constitution.

I didn't go down very far, just 200 feet or so. Only had one close call where some white jelly fish thingie poisoned me a bunch of times. My HP dropped to 16 before stabilizing. Whew!

I can't seem to find anything in town to help cure me of this Rotting Disease and get my Constitution back up, but since there really don't seem to be any hot chicks in this game, I'm guessing things will be okay. Who cares if half my face is falling off?

Tasan 04-12-2009 12:38 AM

Friggin balo! I just had the best fight, killed a half troll while level 14, giving the 300+ xp needed to level. So what does balo decide to do? He says my opponents are unworthy and surrounds me about 5 deep in every direction with Orc Shamans.............I had ZERO mana as well. I forced a blink and it worked but made me pass out. I was still near them though, and the gave chase. When I got the mana, I dared another blink and it was luckily a full 10 north, and they were to the south. They had absolutely hammered me. Friggin Balo....

Tasan 04-12-2009 12:42 AM

So I thought I'd split this up. After the Shaman thing, I went back to town, got healed up and restocked, and headed back out. I came across a Young Red Dragon, which I beat with the help of my dragon slaying halberd. That bumped me up another level (Balo didn't surround me this time, just reset some injuries for me). I continued exploring and ran across a couple of Dark Elves. I killed one, but the other I couldn't get before I ran out of mana and potions to heal with. The dang thing chased me all the way back to town, where I frantically bought everything I could find to fight him off. He kept blinding me, cursing me, and going invis (I think). I don't know what finally happened to him, because I never was able to kill him. I think I lost him with all the buildings and gates and such. I survived with 17 HP after drinking, eating and reading everything I could find in town. So now I'm going back to dungeon diving around 500'. It seems safer down there ;- )

Oh and I'm still sitting at level 16, needing a couple hundred xp to advance.

There's a potion of new life which I believe cures all your mutations, but its pretty deep in the dungeon-though I would suspect you could find one in the 50 million stores that sell potions. :) There should also be a mutatlist (in town/cities?) that can remove them. You can expose yourself to raw chaos somehow and hope that instead of gaining a mutation you lose one because you would have gained a duplicate to one you already have. Or you can hope for the mutation that randomly removes your mutations at random moments. So the mutatlist sounds like the easier choice ;) Have you seen one in the game yet?

Close call there Tasan! You need to carry some teleport scrolls for just this reason. I say this as this is what I should have been carrying when I was attacking the dragons with Duinath I and Balo nuked the nice protected setup I had for fighting them....

Glad you are enjoying it GB! And yes Balo can be pretty awesome until he gives you a horrible mutation like rotting Disease. Had it with one of my Duinath's, and got very lucky and had it cured when I picked up the regeneration mutation. You'll have to hope for items that will boost your con along the way to help negate that mutation or find the mutantlist somewhere in the game to remove it.

Thomkal 04-12-2009 10:32 AM

well I'm really hoping this guy survives now. Balo has raised his stats three times giving him currents of 24,19,15,19,21, and 9. Plus helpful mutations like light an area and detect monsters. But just now when I hit level 10, Balo just dropped...Blue Dragon Scale Mail (30, +13). It gives me protection from electricity, plus I can "breathe" a lightning ball. Woohoo, thanks Balo!

Tasan 04-12-2009 04:20 PM

How can I remove a curse from a weapon I'm using? My mighty halberd has become curse, and I thought just reading a Remove Curse scroll would do it. That, however, seems to be doing nothing. Any ideas?

This follows my first rule of the Wilderness: Don't go there.

Heh, seriously, I wander around in the Wilderness way too much and I usually get killed there somehow. Just yesterday, I stumbled into the outskirts of a Dragon Camp. When the Wyrm drake breathed gravity and nexus on me and cost me 250 HP, I decided it was time for a quick teleport out and confinement to the dungeon for a while.

Hmmmm a Remove Curse scroll should have worked unless it became heavily cursed somehow. Do you know how it became cursed? What did it say when you read the scroll? You likely will need a scroll of *Remove Curse* to remove it then, which will probably be hard to find and expensive I'm afraid. It could also be the "Ancient and Foul Curse", but you should be able to remove the weapon if you have that.

Thomkal 04-12-2009 07:02 PM

Oh and another way to remove lightly cursed items and some cursed artifacts like the sword Calris is to use Enchant Weapon Accuracy and Enchant Deadliness scrolls on them. They have a chance to break the curse. I'm thinking it won't work on your halberd Tasan since remove curse didn't work, but you can give it a try if you can't find/afford a *Remove Curse* scroll.

dwardzala 04-12-2009 08:10 PM

Stupid noob question here - I've gotten to 9th level and haven't seen Balo (or any other gift giving entity). Am I playing the right game or do I have to be a certain race/class? Pretty cool little game otherwise.

dwardzala 04-12-2009 08:26 PM

Nevermind on the above question - I wasn't running the character. (D'oh)

Thomkal 04-12-2009 08:42 PM

welcome dwardzala. I'm glad you figured that out. :)

Malificent 04-12-2009 09:11 PM

Up to level 30 now and just completed a danger level 47 quest to kill a level full of undead, which was relatively easy, since I seem to be protected from all their worst stuff - saw my first room made with unalterable walls (the stuff surrounding towns) and it had a metric ton of traps, monsters, and items. Got a artifact cap out of it...that I'm not using because my current one sustains STR/DEX/CON and that has saved my butt more times than I can count.

One quest got me the Trident of Wrath, which is pretty nice. Off to do another quest now. :)

Sporkimata 04-12-2009 11:47 PM

Finally got a Character to level 22. It's amazing how suspenseful it gets knowing if you die that is it. Balo keeps knocking my stats down and its getting annoying.

Tasan 04-13-2009 12:07 AM

I've made it up to level 18 now via questing. I've run up on this real hard kobold leader one that I just can't get past. Gonna have to stock up on some stuff before trying again.

Lonnie 04-13-2009 12:48 AM

Well I died on my first run at level 15. I finished up a level with a jelly pit and was in bad need of repairs. I figured I'd dive one more level and if it was boring then I'd recall to town. As I descended down the stairs, I found myself right outside of a Dragon pit. I killed a few and teleported away to heal up. Then I worked my way back to the pit and found a nice hallway to lure them into. I killed three and then got blinded and in a single turn was killed before I could blink or teleport.

This was all at 500', the log said the baby multihued dragon was a 900' monster. I guess I should have skipped the dragons and recalled back now that I am sitting here looking back on it.

I did have a nice Balo gift:
a Glaive (Holy Avenger) (2d6) (+5,+75%) [+3] (+3 attacks) {@w0}
You have full knowledge of this item. It increases your wisdom by +3. It
provides 3 extra blows per turn. It is especially deadly against demons,
the undead and evil monsters. It sustains your strength. It provides
resistance to fear. It allows you to see invisible monsters. It has been
blessed by the gods. It provides protection from evil monsters, the
undead and demons. It was granted to you by your Chaos Patron.

Here's my top 10 kills:

[Top 10 deepest kills]

1 Wolfhound Level 20 (1000')
2 Ochre jelly Level 19 (950')
1 Baby multi-hued dragon Level 18 (900')
2 Wolf Level 18 (900')
2 Pseudo dragon Level 17 (850')
1 Knight archer Level 17 (850')
1 Kobold chieftain Level 14 (700')
1 Baby gold dragon Level 13 (650')
1 Baby bronze dragon Level 13 (650')
6 Baby black dragon Level 13 (650')

I guess I'll start again tomorrow.

Tasan 04-13-2009 02:23 AM

Well I've wandered far and wide to find a *Remove Curse* and I don't think they exist. No more new weapons for me, I guess. I've been to 7 towns I believe, and nothing anywhere close to that. I almost got killed in my last wanderings, so I think I'm going back to the dungeon town to go diving for a little while.

JAG 04-13-2009 06:52 AM

They shouldn't be that hard to find. Look for towns with scroll sellers or temples, those are the ones that usually carry remove curse scrolls.

Nothing much new to report, didn't have a lot of time to play.

JAG 04-13-2009 09:28 AM

Oh, one update I guess. I found a shield of resistance and so I was able to swap out my ring mail of resistance for an artifact set of rags (can't remember the name of it). Fairly nifty, +21 AC, +1 str/dex/con, create food every 100 turns (bye bye scrolls of satisfy hunger), sustain strength, and the difference between the shield + rags vs. ringmail saved me about 12 lbs of carrying. I think I'm at lvl 24 currently.

Thomkal 04-13-2009 10:29 AM

Well at least I wasn't the only one to die via dragon pit :)

Thomkal 04-13-2009 10:31 AM

That's some set of rags there JAG. good going at level 24 there

That sucks Tasan. Did you try the scrolls of enhance weapon? What cursed you do you remember?

I was just looking in Galran and found a scroll of *remove curse* in one of the more expensive stores, It was there for 45,000+. :( So the scroll does exist, hopefully you can find it one of the less expensive stores.

Thomkal 04-13-2009 11:20 AM

Hmmm dragon pits seem to be more common more early in this variant, just encountered one at 500' that I'm ignoring given my earlier death.

Found it in the regular scroll store for 11,500 which is a little more manageable.

That's my second law of Zangband: The monsters aren't going anywhere, so feel free to teleport at the first sign of real trouble.

Sucks though. Like Thomkal, I'm curious what killed you.

You'd think so, but it won't. Everyone has countless deaths playing these game (on the usenet, people used to start off posts with YASD to signify Yet Another Stupid Death). My favorite one personally was getting a scroll of recall to work at the last minute bringing me back to town with one hp, only to die by a sparrow in town.

If it makes you feel better, if you had teleported, you probably would've ended up in the middle of a jelly pit and been killed, and would've blamed yourself for teleporting instead of healing.

EDIT: Apparently it was a fruit bat, not a sparrow.

LOL at the posts in that thread JAG. I still recommend Hengband from that post and Magic Eater is still my favorite character class ever.

Tasan 04-13-2009 05:53 PM

I've literally looked in every shop in 6-7 towns and didn't see that *remove curse*...gah...at one point I could have afforded 11.5k, but not right now. Gonna have to quest some more and keep looking. By the way, there are at least 2 towns as big or bigger than the one immediately east of the one we start in. They are to the far west and north west. There's usually some REAL nice stuff there, for pretty decent prices. I found about 10 weapons I would have bought if I could have removed my current one....

Can't it be there's been some sort of error? You die.

JAG 04-14-2009 05:06 AM

Three tips I think you can take from that death:

1. Never allow yourself to stand in a place where you would take a bunch of breath attacks if you can help it (so yes, teleporting would've been the right call).

2. As low as you were in the dungeon, you need to have the four basic resistances (fire, cold, lightning, acid). Even then, you wouldn't have wanted to stay in your situation because you'd still take some damage with only resistance (if you had immunity, it'd be ok). I also wouldn't recommend going that far without see invisible or free action unless you're very careful.

3. As you get higher in level, you need better sources of curing (cure critical wounds, potions of healing, potions of *healing*, etc...)

Nice work though, I'm impressed you survived to fight as deep as you were.

Thomkal 04-14-2009 07:19 AM

I agree with JAG's points. Three things I would add:

1. Don't really need those wands of stone to mud if you have a shovel.

2. Your armor has absolutely no plusses to armor class, and your chain mail is -2. Magical armor is tough to come by in this variant, so I would boost yours as much as possible, especially those you are likely to keep around for a while-the chain mail and helm.

3. I've seen people pick Ray of Frost as one of their spells. I understand the benefits to picking it, but in my opinion its a waste of a spell pick. Take Magic Missile and that frees you up to take something like Mana Burst, which is a must since its your first long range area of effect spell. I'm not a big fan of Polymorph Other either but it does have its uses. I see you improved Magic Missile, do you remember how much damage it was doing for you? Just curious as I haven't improved any of my spells yet.

But like JAG said, good job to get that far in the dungeon with the stats and equipment you had.

JAG 04-14-2009 08:44 AM

The only spells I use are magic missile, trap / door destruction, blink, and mana burst. When I get my failure level down some, I'll probably take some big hitters from the other book. Flame strike is a reasonable choice to take down big single enemies, but there are quite a few monsters with res. fire. Two other thoughts after looking at your equipment:

---Check in shops (jewelers / magic wares) for a better ring than a ring of slow digestion. Food / scrolls of satisfy hunger are cheap and light to carry, there are far better enchantments available on rings (my current two are one that adds +3 to int (not that great really) and one that adds +55% to weapon damage). Same with the amulet as the immortality one doesn't really do anything useful.

---I prefer a lantern to a torch at all times, even if the torch doesn't require fuel like the one you have. Fuel is cheap, readily available, doesn't weigh too much, and lasts a long time. Being able to see 2 in each direction vs. 1 is a big help in letting you see what's coming and exploring rooms more quickly.

That's a lot to digest, but hopefully this all helps for your next go at it.

JAG 04-14-2009 08:45 AM

I'm up to lvl 25. Not a lot to report, except that I found a nice set of gloves of power in the shop (+5 strength), so finally I feel more like a warrior and don't have to sweat my inventory weight as much, at the cost of some mana.

Thomkal 04-14-2009 09:35 AM

Had to face a unique Wormtongue last night and thought it might be a tough fight for me. So saved him until I had cleared the level, checked all my gear and made a plan to attack him. Figured I'd soften him up first with my Blue Dragon Scale Mail Lighting Breath. Well all that planning for naught. One breath=one dead Wormtongue. Dropped a nice Battle Axe of Flame which I'm using as a primary weapon now, but keeping my Undead Slayer and a Mace of Slay Orc in my inventory to take out those specific mobs. Don't usually carry more than one hand-to-hand weapon, so interested to see how this works for me. Level 17 now with Duinath III.

Thomkal 04-14-2009 09:56 AM

well keeping the slay orc mace seems like a good idea as I just found an orc pit. I also had a terrible revisiting of Duinath I's death by baby blue dragon when I found another baby blue dragon pit with a few energy hounds thrown in. Thankfully I have a detect monsters mutation so I saw the pit before I opened the door.

I'm actually protected against lightning thanks to my blue dragon scale mail. But thanks to a mutation I'm also vulnerable to all four elemental attacks. If this was a normal character I might chance it, but given this is a comp, and my history with dragon pits in them, I'll not going to attempt it.

Thomkal 04-14-2009 10:08 AM

well it wasn't an orc pit, but Lagduf, the Snaga and his escort. My nifty mace and a potion of heroism made short work of him. He dropped....a normal scimitar. *&^&*&!

Yikes, that's an awful mutation. I found my first pack of hounds this morning too, fire hounds. I went down a level and I was stuck in the middle of them. I tried blinking and stayed stuck in their midst so they happily breathed all over me. Fortunately I had resist fire so after my first failed blink I just mana burst most of them to death then picked off the few stragglers that were left. Hounds (specifically time hounds) and summoners are my two most hated classes of monsters.

Malificent 04-14-2009 10:51 AM

I'm level 31 now - about 1600' deep and I'm pretty buff as it goes - I have two stats (DEX and CON) that are maxed out at 40+. Artifact weapon and main armor. My biggest issue at the moment is that freaking mutation that causes the level to reset. I just had the 4th time where I had a great vault that I was slowly working my way through and the level reset before I had a chance to grab any items.

And no mutalist to be found, unfortunately. I have a lot of great mutations, but this one is starting to really bug the living snot out of me.

Thanks for the tips. What amazes me about this game is how I'm learning something new every time I play it. I love the competition and hope we can get another down the road now that I'm getting the hang of it.

I keep getting a fatal error when hitting a hallucinating gas trap. Anyone else experience this and any clue to fix it?

There does seem to be some kind of bug with hallucinations. Here's a link to a thread that discusses it along with a bunch of stuff. You might look earlier in the thread to see if its discussed more or not.

Yeah, another competition would be fun, especially with a heavy magic using class like a mage.

well the winner gets to decide the next competition, so there's some incentive for you. :)

Malificent 04-14-2009 06:24 PM

My new weapon of choice:

The Broad Sword of Brutality (3d5) (+22, +95%) (+4)

It increases your strength, stealth, and perception by 4. It does extra damage from frost. It is especially deadly against orcs and demons. It uses psychic energy to strike great blows. It sustains your charisma. It provides resistance to blindness and confusion. It slows your metabolism. It produces an electric sheath. It provides protection from demons and orcs. It cannot be harmed by the elements. You found it in a vault at 1850'.

Yum!

Thomkal 04-14-2009 06:57 PM

wow, that sword is just brutal! :) I'm completely jealous ;)

Malificent 04-14-2009 07:09 PM

Some random advice/thoughts:
  • Stealth has to be one of the most underrated abilities in the game. My stealth is monstrous right now thanks to several items and I can wander through huge groups of monsters killing them one at a time without waking the others. Saves me so much time and pain getting ganged up on.
  • For inventory space saving, stick with one healing potion type - whatever the biggest one you can easily afford a lot of. If you get smaller stuff, ignore them. Bigger, better potions - save them in the house until you pile up enough to carry with you.
  • Carrying a bundle of identify scrolls is really useful, but also really heavy. But I hate carrying around a staff of perception, because those always seem to get burned up, leaving me with no identify. Rods are the way to go, for sure.
  • When you reach midgame and you get lots of pits of random monsters, leaving way more items than you can carry and/or care to sort through, just clear out any scrolls and staves on the floor and then start throwing around some fireballs - that will burn anything that isn't magical, saving a bunch of work.
  • The most annoying creatures have to be the summoners. I hate those guys. I mean, I *really* hate those guys. They can turn what should be a quick and easy fight into a long and involved one or occasionally into a battle to my death when someone summons in really powerful creatures.

Ahhhh, YASD. Did a quest that was too tough for my level and paid the ultimate price. He did 500+ hp with that last fire breath. Woo-boy. At some point, I lost the fire resistance I had and didn't realize it and it cost me. This will probably be my entry, since I don't think I'll be able to build him back up that high by next Monday.

Thomkal 04-14-2009 09:05 PM

wow Mali, surprised to see a death report from you given those stats and items. That will teach you to keep an eye on your resistances. ;) Great job, certainly will be tough to beat.

JAG 04-15-2009 08:59 AM

Well, I've got a clear target to hit now. I'm up to level 27 and had some highs and lows last night and this morning.

Highs: Found the Phial of Galadriel (sp?) from a quest, also The Hard Leather Cap of Thranduil [2,+10] (+2) in a quest (res blind + nexus, +2 int/wis, telepathy) and in a shop found a ring of permanence (sustain all stats, hold life) and in another shop found a decent weapon of Westernese (+2 str/dex/con, free action, see invis., kill/protect orc, troll, giant). Now that I've got the key resists (minus poison) covered, I'm doing some diving to try and find some stat potions.

Low: Veterans are stupid too. I accidentally destroyed my chaotic weapon when going through a bunch of stuff I picked up (I liked it for the extra MPs). I identified The Hard Leather Cap of Thranduil on the floor and thought I had picked it up...but I didn't. I'm used to a different option for picking items up which has caused me to backtrack and pick things up again multiple times. Well this time I didn't backtrack so the artifact is lost for good. Sigh...

On my most recent full dive I found a level with 3 lesser vaults, one with some stat pots. That one had a Mezzodaemon but fortunately Bullroarer the Hobbit (friendly) was in the vault and cleared out a lot of the bad guys. (tip: friendly uniques can't be killed by other monsters, but they can kill any non-uniques). Nothing else was too terribly difficult. I'm on another level with visions of death floating through my mind and I forgot to bring scrolls of detection with me, so this should be interesting...

Thomkal 04-15-2009 10:34 AM

Ooof on losing out on an artifact like that JAG. There are a couple different options for picking stuff up if you didn't know that already. You can have it pick things up by default or not and prompt to pick things up or not. It's the first two options under Inventory Options. Good luck the rest of the way, but get that poison resist! :)

Yeah, I set a number of options that don't really affect the gameplay but just make things how I like them, but after my initial setup, I haven't touched it. For whatever reason I didn't set the pickup command to my usual (don't pick up by default, don't prompt by default). The thing that annoys me especially was losing telepathy since it's usually only available via the head slot and I don't nearly have a good enough char to just slap a helm of telepathy on. Oh well, hopefully I'll find a nice random artifact to stick on my head and I do have a couple decent items for that equipment slot. I'd really like to upgrade my weapon / amulet and a few other spots. Upgrading the weapon would be tough without some other better equipment though due to losing free action / see invisible.

re: poison resistance...I know, it'll only take one drolem to ruin my character at this point. And my detection abilities are basically non-existent.

Tasan 04-15-2009 03:45 PM

Balo is one funny dude.

Upon reaching level 20, he turned me into a female vampire. Yay.

So is sunlight gonna harm me now, or can I do a "drink blood" attack that steals life for me? I wish I had more time right now for this game, I'm digging it.

path12 04-15-2009 03:56 PM

OK, been really busy since Friday and am behind but plan to play a bunch tonight.

Question I saw last night -- what do you do with friendly uniques? I saved and quit with Bullroarer in the same room but couldn't target him.

Also, I'm just at level 9 -- should I start with quests now? I'm not finding anything worthwhile in either the dungeons or the stores.

Balo mutated my spell potential way down. I've got 6 SP points now. Yeesh.

Hey JAG,

It just occurred to me that preserve artifacts is on, so it is possible you will get another shot at that helm. I don't normally play with it on, but did so for the newbies in the comp.

Yep sunlight is going to hurt you now unless you have resist light. Be careful of artifact light sources too.

Hey Path,

not too familiar with friendly uniques, but I assume you can do what I do with a normally "friendly" Farmer Maggot at the town level. Shoot him with a distance weapon/magic missile/area of effect spell/item. You don't have to target him. Just get in a line with him and shoot in the direction he's from you. If you want to keep him friendly, he may wander around the dungeon and kill things for you which can be good or bad.

As for quests, would have to see your equipment and resists, but you might be able to do swarming insects if you have a way to detect monsters, light up a room, and area of effect spells to take things out quickly or you will be overwhelmed. Perhaps a Potion of Speed will help too. If you follow the road north, you will get to the town of Zathdin View which has a couple of lower level quests-make sure you have detect invisible options handy.

6 MP? Oooof.

This variant of Angband is perhaps the most "stingiest" of any I've run across when it comes to good equipment in the dungeon. I went several levels down before I finally got a piece of armor with a + on it with Duinath III here. Try going "next door" to Galran to your south and east a little for a large variety of stores.

I think the kicker with preserve artifacts is that the artifact will reappear only if it hasn't been identified when you leave the level. I left it ID'ed (and even *ID'ed* since I had a scroll on me) on the ground. *smacks forehead again*

Both. Use the 'U' command to see your vampire power and any other random ones you may have received from mutations. Light will damage you (it's basically impossible for you to travel by day, use Control-T to see what time it is in-game if you're in the dungeon) unless you have resist light, then you're alright. Might want to check jeweler stores to see if you can find a ring of light and dark resistance. As a vampire you get lots of cool resistances too, res cold, res poison, hold life, maybe see invisible? And some stat boosts too I believe. All in all you got a pretty fortunate transformation.

Ah you are right, I stand corrected.

Thomkal 04-15-2009 04:37 PM

Have to say I'm really enjoying the monster pits in this version. On the level I'm on now I just had a ranger/druid pit, and now I've found a "cold" pit-freezing spheres, cold vortex, frost giants, white baby dragons, etc. Now if only the Rod of Fire Balls I got from one of the rangers would just activate...

Perhaps a Potion of Speed will help too. If you follow the road north, you will get to the town of Zathdin View which has a couple of lower level quests-make sure you have detect invisible options handy.

6 MP? Oooof.

Man, I got nothin'. Seriously. Finding tons of everburning lanterns and torches and average weapons. I did manage to find one *enchant armor* scroll in a store which got my mail up to +7, but other than that I've got a basic cap, sword and boots. I can't even find a bow or sling in a dungeon or a store as of yet (I've been down to 450' in the dungeon so far).

Balo has twice given me chaotic main gauches, but those only give me 2 blows with an avg of 7 or 8 damage (plus my beak attack). With my plain broad sword I get those same 2 blows but an avg of 12 damage/blow.

Well, I'm not likely to win this particular competition anyway at this point so might as well give a quest a shot tonight. I'll try those other towns for stores too.

EDIT: Forgot, I did find a wand of fire bolts that I'm holding onto as well, though my magic skills are bad enough I'll probably fry myself trying it. :)

Yeah definitely try the other towns. I mentioned earlier in the thread that I was having some of the same problems as you. The other towns definitely have a lot more to choose from. Galran is bigger and a little closer, and if you are lucky you might get a courier quest to bring you back to the home town or the other town I mentioned. Can get you a nice chunk of change.

Great. Now I've been mutated into an incredible coward. I'm gonna need to carry tons of boldness potions.

Tasan 04-16-2009 12:40 AM

I'm actually OK with my vampire. Something on me either protects me from light (I didn't see anything saying that) or its just not bothering me, because I've been running around in daylight to no ill affect. Another bonus is the food requirement. Its like having a slow metabolism plus regular food doesn't do anything for you, you just bite something and you're full. Now I figured out the purpose to all those townfolk running about ;- )

Tasan 04-16-2009 12:41 AM

Oh and scroll of satisfy hunger works on me as well, which is a bonus when I'm up against a bunch of "bad tasting" opponents.

Man Path, you seemed to have gotten the grumpy demon patron out of all of us.

You should be able to tell what it is unless its an item that needed to be *Identified* Do a Shift-C for your character sheet, then n for next page to see your resistances if you haven't figured that out already.

On the level I'm on now I just had a ranger/druid pit, and now I've found a "cold" pit-freezing spheres, cold vortex, frost giants, white baby dragons, etc. Now if only the Rod of Fire Balls I got from one of the rangers would just activate...

Have to say though that they are a little less enjoyable when you return to the same level and get another "cold" pit. They should be rarer than that.

The current dungeon I'm romping through is a vault-fest. Every level I've been on has had at least one (not to mention every level giving me 'visions of death flashing through my head'). It makes it slow to clear out, but I've found some decent stuff. I replaced my gloves of power with artifact gloves that basically do the same thing but had better enchantments. I found The Steel Helm of Hammerhand (+3 str/dex/con, woohoo) so I don't feel as bad about losing that other cap. I could stand an improvement in the weapon department and hopefully I'll come across some int pots because 27 mana isn't cutting it, but I have come across some stat pots (mostly CON / CHA). And still no poison resistance. Other than that, things are going great. Only 1-2k from lvl 28.

Yeah, I'm about ready to bag it. I might start another character just to explore Z+ a little more -- there are some things I really like about it.

Thomkal 04-16-2009 04:30 PM

I got my revenge against the mage quest that killed my other character, hurrah!

JAG 04-17-2009 11:02 AM

Still chugging along, helped by some insomnia last night. I predictably ran into some poison breathers, but fortunately no major ones (some bats and hounds). I was in the midst of a vault when I got a perfect patron gift ('allow me to remove thine enemies' or something like that)...must have been a mass genocide and I got to scoop up the loot with zero risk. It didn't extend the entire way through and I detected a chaos drake when I had no chaos res., so I gave up on that (another tip, if in doubt, run away). There was a pit nearby with a bunch of warriors and the king of the Neblungs that was too tough for me...he hit to disenchant, stole 5k gps, and could self-heal completely when I couldn't do near enough damage to him. In the warrior pit were black knights that not only hit hard but cast cause wound spells, so I unfortunately had to give up fighting there as well. I explored dungeons and did some quests for a while (I got blasted by Balo when I hit lvl 29 after leveling up from a quest...good thing I wasn't in the middle of fighting). Stats are coming along fairly well. And finally when I returned to town at the end of the night I found a shield of res. that had poison resistance as well. Hurrah. Still got a chance to pull this off. My lack of familiarity with Z might do me in though because I don't remember a lot about the monsters (been playing more of T.O.M.E. the past couple years). For example I was next to a phantom beast, didn't seem to be a big deal, until I realized he was hitting me for 100 damage per turn in melee, far more than just about anything I had fought. Anyway, having fun, gotta get some more kill power and then I'll feel safer. It's nice having mana around 70ish instead of 22 that it had been for a while.

Thomkal 04-18-2009 10:41 AM

Still alive at Level 23. Just found my first artifact-the Phial of Galadriel, the normal first artifact found by many. Still nice to have a light source that doesn't need fuel, and now I can get rid of my rod of illumination. Only at 800' so need to dive some. Balo very nicely provided me with free action gauntlets so I should be fine around 1000' and deeper.

Just a reminder that the comp ends tomorrow at 11:59 EST-so far only Mali has posted an official entry. Even if you can't beat his level, would love to see your character dump to see what happened with your version of the character. Hope you all enjoyed the comp as much as I did.

Malificent 04-19-2009 09:08 AM

I toyed around with the character for a little while after my painful death, but couldn't quite get up the momentum again - in the meantime, been toying with some other class types. :)

Can't blame you after getting so far. Had a hard enough time getting into Duinath II when I had such a good start with I. III is the best though. :) And that rogue I had you test the file on is pretty fun too in this variant. I don't usually play rogues, but he's pretty rocking with a sling in his hand and backstab ability.

Godzilla Blitz 04-19-2009 05:38 PM

I got stuck catching up on some work stuff, so I didn't really have time to get back to this until this weekend. I figured it was a bit late to make any sort of a serious run.

I'll likely end up playing the game more though. It's fun.

Thomkal 04-19-2009 06:51 PM

That's cool GB. Part of the reason for doing a comp was to get people to try a roguelike and hopefully like it. Feel free to ask questions and post character dumps here if you want some advice and help.
