The most covered song in the world is my classic pick.

Finally!

Great pick. Would have been my #1 overall. I think that you got a steal at 1.5.

That's hard to say - I'm hardly a music snob, and I think Dylan is pure genius. Rolling Stone (not really a music snob magazine at this point) had Like a Rolling Stone as the number one song of the century.

I guess only the final vote will tell ;).

Bee 02-22-2007 11:23 AM

What's the over/under on a Billy Joel song?

Maple Leafs 02-22-2007 11:32 AM

Hmmm... ntndeacon was here in this thread when bub picked.

We'll give him a few more minutes to come back, then pick for him.

Sublime 2 02-22-2007 11:39 AM

So far it's gone pretty much the way I was thinking except for the Dylan pick. I had it just a little lower, but I still like it.

Maple Leafs 02-22-2007 11:59 AM

Well, not sure what happened to him, so I'll pick for him.

ntndeacon's pick:

Classic -
Epic -
Arena -
Trendsetter - 1.6 - Good Vibrations - Beach Boys
Love Song -
One-Hit Wonder -
Party -
Crossover -
Cover -
Anti-Establishment -

Maple Leafs 02-22-2007 12:02 PM

My pick won't be a big surprise...

Classic -
Epic -
Arena - 1.7 - Welcome to the Jungle - Guns N' Roses
Trendsetter -
Love Song -
One-Hit Wonder -
Party -
Crossover -
Cover -
Anti-Establishment -

Considering they really only put out two "real" albums, it's amazing that you could make an argument for G'n'R having a top pick in four categories: Love song (Sweet Child O' Mine), cover (Knockin' on Heaven's Door) and epic (November Rain). But I'm going with Jungle, a song that kicks so much ass that it's still played at every freaking sporting event in the world 20 years later.

I might have been able to get away with this in the Classics category, but if you've ever seen Jungle performed live you know it belongs here.

Oddly enough, I think there are other songs that are a better pick here than Jungle, but I suspect they have a better chance of still being on the board next round. We'll see if I'm right.

lordscarlet is on the clock at 1.8

KevinNU7 02-22-2007 12:07 PM

GNR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

KevinNU7 02-22-2007 12:10 PM

I'm curious who the first woman selected will be.

lordscarlet 02-22-2007 12:11 PM

Classic -
Epic -
Arena -
Trendsetter -
Love Song -
One-Hit Wonder -
Party -
Crossover - "Walk This Way", Run-D.M.C. feat. Aerosmith - 1.8
Cover -
Anti-Establishment -

This was a very hard pick for me. I have a lot of solid ideas for other categories, but there were a few factors in this pick. I won't reveal them all for stategerie reasons, but I think this is the runaway top crossover pick (and the only I could really think of) and I want to get it (and Aerosmith and Run-D.M.C.) off the board before someone else gets to it.

Very good pick, but he will probably need to explain it a bit to the voters.

ntndeacon 02-22-2007 12:37 PM

I know I was in the room but I was away from my computer...Had a meeting

Maple Leafs 02-22-2007 12:44 PM

Bucc is not around today due to work, but did send a pick:

Classic -
Epic -
Arena -
Trendsetter -
Love Song -
One-Hit Wonder -
Party -
Crossover -
Cover -
Anti-Establishment - 1.9 - Fight the Power - Public Enemy

I think this is another very, very strong choice.

ISiddiqui 02-22-2007 12:47 PM

The Beatles at 1.5 is quite a steal. Yesterday, especially, but plenty of good picks from their library could have been selected and had similar effect in the Classic catagory (Strawberry Fields, Hard Days Night, Come Together, etc).

Maple Leafs 02-22-2007 12:51 PM

Two very strong back-to-back picks from Oilers...

Classic - 1.10 - Hotel California - Eagles
Epic - 2.1 - American Pie - Don Maclean

Arena -
Trendsetter -
Love Song -
One-Hit Wonder -
Party -
Crossover -
Cover -
Anti-Establishment -

I pretty much passed over any Beatles options as I was compiling a list with the assumption that it would be taken before my first pick, much less later as I have a few things I definitely wanted to take higher.

#1 "McLean"
#2 Do you have another Bucc pick?

Maple Leafs 02-22-2007 12:55 PM

A summary of round one:

1.1 Classic -Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
1.2 Trendsetter - Smells Like Teen Spirit- Nirvana
1.3 Classic - Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan
1.4 Epic - Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
1.5 Classic - Yesterday - The Beatles
1.6 Trendsetter - Good Vibrations - Beach Boys
1.7 Arena - Welcome to the Jungle - Guns N' Roses
1.8 Crossover - Walk This Way - Run-D.M.C. feat. Aerosmith
1.9 Anti-Establishment - Fight the Power - Public Enemy
1.10 Classic - Hotel California - Eagles

So far the Classic category is seeing the most action. No women picked yet. Nothing from the last 15 years chosen.

Funny you should ask.

Bucc sent three picks. One was his Public Enemy pick, and the other two are already gone. He also PM'ed me to say he wouldn't be online during the day due to work.

As I see it we have two options here:

- Press pause, wait for Bucc to make his next pick, and resume the draft tonight/tomorrow

- Appoint someone to be Bucc's co-owner (since we may run into this again, assuming he's unavailable every workday)

Any thoughts from the others?

ntndeacon 02-22-2007 01:01 PM

By the way, For my Beach boys pick...This song was one that redefined the Beach Boys. It also used instruments that were at best rare if not foriegn to rock and roll... Like the cello and the therimin. This is one of ther first songs I know of that used a layered production..giving us a type of musical collage. Later seen in Strawberry fields (for example)

Subby 02-22-2007 01:01 PM

So I have a little list of songs I am going to pick when my turn comes back around and they are almost all gone already!

Fight the Power...great pick

NoMyths 02-22-2007 01:02 PM

Re the Beatles pick: that was what was giving me the most trouble, but it seemed to me that since I couldn't decide if A Day in the Life or Strawberry Fields (or hell, Let it Be) would win out, it would fragment the vote too much. Definitely great to have The Beatles on your side, but I'm personally torn as to whether Yesterday is the best song from them.

Logan 02-22-2007 01:05 PM

Re: Bucc...

CO-OWNER PICK!!!

Oh, did you just want input from people who are actually involved in this thing, and not those who want it moving quickly because we're enjoying it so much? :)

Hm. My gut is to attempt to contact him through a private email address for him first. (if anyone has one) Unless he has discussed his picks with someone already (Wade could be used in an emergency for me), I'd hate to see someone pick for him and go in the completely wrong direction. Having said that, I'm eagerly waiting for this to move on. Daytime is also the best time for me to play. :) Looks like three picks is not nearly deep enough for a pre-draft list. :) My vote is an attempt to contact him outside of the board ( I don't recall what Bucc does for a living or if he would be checking email) and go from there. I'd hate to screw him, and I'd hate to see this slow down.

I did PM him this morning, so if he has e-mail notification turned on he should have received that. Other than that, I have nothing.

Lathum 02-22-2007 01:08 PM

re: bucc

I say give him an hour or so, sometimes people say they will be gone then pop in.

After an hour assign a co-owner with the understanding if he has an issue with his pick he gets to redraft it under the assumption he can't take anyone on the board.

Actually, it came out in late 1991 (September?), so technically... ;)

Lathum 02-22-2007 01:10 PM

dola- another solution could be the other 9 owners submit what they would pick and the majority ( if any) wins that pick.

Yeah, the problem there is what if we get ten more picks along, he shows up and decides he doesn't like this pick, but someone who has picked since would have taken that song?

THIS IS THE FOFC MUSIC DRAFT. THERE IS ONLY ONE THING MORE SERIOUS.

In other words, be prepared!

NoMyths 02-22-2007 01:16 PM

I like the co-owner idea, and I don't have a problem with him redrafting if the choice doesn't suit him, but only after every other owner has drafted in between the co-ownered pick and whatever his next pick would be. Seems that way if someone wanted a song that he'd choose, they'd have had the opportunity to grab it.

I think thems the breaks. He can pick anything that is still eligible, and take his next pick.

Crapshoot 02-22-2007 01:25 PM

So yeah, I'd be glad to pick.Bucc liked my taste in the TV draft - but that's because I picked The Wonder Years. :D

Subby 02-22-2007 01:29 PM

Looking forward to all the obvious ones dropping off the board (well, obvious except for that bizarre Dylan pick, of course) and getting into more obscure/inspired picks...

NoMyths 02-22-2007 01:32 PM

Could have been worse...I could have chosen a second or third best Zeppelin song to lead the whole draft off. ;)

This word inspired, I do not think it means what you think it means.

Maple Leafs 02-22-2007 01:32 PM

OK, so it's settled. Crapshoot will be picking for Bucc if he hasn't shown up within a half hour.

Nothing inspired about my pick...that's the curse of the 1-1. You have to pick the 800 lb gorilla. Picking another Zeppelin song before Stairway would be like going Dylan in the top 3. Or picking Sam Bowie before MJ... :D

Walk This Way is like Tony Gonzalez in a fantasy draft five years ago. Not necessariy the best overall player available, but so far ahead of everyone else at the position that it's a good pick.

If there was no "one song per artist" limitation, G'n'R would have about five songs taken in the first three rounds.

And incidentally, if you'd been here and done that, I would have cancelled the draft, deleted my account, and started cutting myself.

Bucc already has an anti-establishment song.

Not a bad song, but I think anti-establishment is such a deep position that you don't really need to reach at this stage.

With the "revised" pick 2.2, Bucc/Crapshoot take
I can't get no satisfaction by the Rolling Stones in the Epic category. Perhaps the greatest song by the greatest rock band in history - can't go wrong with that.

So Bucc's list is now:

Classic -
Epic - 2.2 - Satisfaction - Rolling Stones
Arena -
Trendsetter -
Love Song -
One-Hit Wonder -
Party -
Crossover -
Cover -
Anti-Establishment - 1.9 - Fight the Power - Public Enemy

lordscarlet is up

Maple Leafs 02-22-2007 02:08 PM

I like the pick, but is Satisfaction really an epic (vs. just a classic)?

st.cronin 02-22-2007 02:10 PM

If he had gone with the Britney Spears version, he could have gotten the woman out of the way, and kept the Stones on the board for a later pick.

:D

I didn't think the Stones would last past this round. ML's right - in retrospect, I would have put it in the Classic category, as opposed to the Epic.

On the other hand, is Crapshoot a co-owner or just a proxy for us to help Bucc make the best choice to beat us? ;)

does anyone else get the feeling the one hit wonders are gonna be like closers in a baseball draft. Once someone picks one there will be a mad scramble on them

Nope.

I was thinking that would happen with covers, actually.

Classic -
Epic -
Arena -
Trendsetter - 2.3 - "Rapper's Delight", The Sugarhill Gang
Love Song -
One-Hit Wonder -
Party -
Crossover - 1.8 - "Walk This Way", Run-D.M.C. feat. Aerosmith
Cover -
Anti-Establishment -

My pick last round factored in picking again 4 slots later; I could have easily taken "Rapper's Delight" at 1.8. My original pre-draft email to ML said that I wanted trendsetter first no matter what (I had "Smells Like Teen Spirit" originally.) This was still a tough pick for me. I had some thoughts in other categories since 1.8 and some other thoughts here. I will expand when it will no longer help anyone else.

On to "Rapper's Delight". It is the definitive rap song. There is no argument as to what started the genre, hell, it named the genre. I couldn't go with a better trendsetter. I don't know that this is quite the Tony Gonzalez pick that "Walk This Way" was, but I think it's like picking between LT, LJ and Alexander.

guess I'm weird

Very strong pick in the trendsetter category.

lordscarlet draft so far: A+

Sounds fair.

Lordscarlet, did you grow up a rap fan?

I am just wondering because I have never heard of the sugarhill gang and your first pick was also a rap song, kind of.

I agree, I think he's just about lapped the competition at this point. This draft is now for second place.

lordscarlet 02-22-2007 02:25 PM

Oh, and.. Maple Leafs is on the clock at 2.4!

I knew people would think this. But, no. I grew up with Country in the 80s, Grunge Rock, Country and some mainstream rap in the 90s, and primarily indie rock and punk rock in the 00s.

Raise your hand if you have heard of The Organization !!
