Don Cherry went off on that, saying it was one of the very few times he was ever embarassed to be a Canadian and then went on some rant about how America always defended Canada in wars or would defend Canada in a war and Russia wouldn't or something Don Cherry-esque like that. It was enjoyable.

Yeah I remember that rant, and I agree. U.S.-Canada is like a big brother-little brother thing to me. If they're facing each other, I want Canada to win. Otherwise, I'd rather see the U.S. win a lot of the times unless there's some cool story underdog or a defeat would serve a lesson (like the basketball team doing poorly in some world championships, so that they'd take it more seriously and field a crazier team). But U.S.-Russia, I'd rather see U.S. win for sure.

Don't read too much into Cherry's comments, if it had happened in Toronto instead of Montreal he would been applauding the fans for booing the USA because of US/Canada Trade Agreements, border restrictions and who knows what else.... It was an another opportunity to take a shot at Montreal who robbed him of ever winning a Stanley Cup as a coach...;)

whomario 02-24-2010 05:31 PM

whoa, the neutral crowd cheered the underdog on, never heard of that ... Oh wait, i was there doing the same thing during the soccer world cup in ī06 .

Seriously, when Latvia played Russia they cheered for Latvia, when Germany played Sweden they cheered for Germany. When switzerland plays the US, they cheer for the swiss.

Donīt read more into it than it was. Maybe they cheered a bit more, but it wasnīt like they were chanting against the US or anything.

I didn't come out from there, but I'm planning to go in there within the next 5 minutes or so.

Spelunking? Make sure you wear your hat with the light on it.

Dr. Sak 02-24-2010 06:37 PM

Best of luck to my Canadian friends.

Big Fo 02-24-2010 06:44 PM

C'mon Russia.

bhlloy 02-24-2010 06:52 PM

I can't believe the NHL is considering not allowing players to play in Sochi. The US-Canada and this game so far have been some of the most exciting hockey I've ever seen. Of course first they have to get the game on a real TV channel but this has to be an amazing advert for the game. Only Bettman could screw something like this up.

Stoked that Getzlaf has the goal. Would love to see him succeed and help Canada get a medal.

Neuqua 02-24-2010 06:57 PM

Canada's possessed.

Big Fo 02-24-2010 06:58 PM

Damn, 3-0 down already. Get it together Russia, I don't want the US to have to play these guys again.

Logan 02-24-2010 07:00 PM

"Blitzed" was definitely a good word.

bbor 02-24-2010 07:06 PM

Russian firepower could get them back in the game real fast.

bbor 02-24-2010 07:08 PM

or not.....4-1

Travis 02-24-2010 07:11 PM

Nice to see, that for at least a period, the Canadians have remembered how to play the game.

Now here's hoping they don't stop what they're doing until the Olympics are over. They already got away from their physical play once they were up 3-0 then got it going again after Russia got their first goal, they'd better keep it up the rest of the way or this game could get a lot more interesting than it should.

Logan 02-24-2010 07:12 PM

Canadians dominated that period. :)

DeToxRox 02-24-2010 07:12 PM

The last thing I think any Russian fan wanted to hear coming out of this game was Nabakov being in playoff form.

LOL

bbor 02-24-2010 07:30 PM

5-1...wow.

Logan 02-24-2010 07:31 PM

WTF is Nabakov doing?

bbor 02-24-2010 07:32 PM

Damn...6-1

Logan 02-24-2010 07:33 PM

Heh...tried re-posting "WTF is Nabakov doing?" and got a message that I can't repost something over a 5 minute span.

Logan 02-24-2010 07:34 PM

Big celebration from Afinogenov.

Big Fo 02-24-2010 07:34 PM

What a letdown.

Oh, Russia makes it 6-2. The comeback is on!

bbor 02-24-2010 07:34 PM

Nice goal.

SackAttack 02-24-2010 07:36 PM

So I remember being shocked at the beatdown the American women were laying on the Russian women, thinking at first it was men's hockey.

This is no less shocking. What the hell happened to Russia here?

Logan 02-24-2010 07:36 PM

LOL...did Edzo just start complaining about the Russians not granting interviews?

sterlingice 02-24-2010 07:38 PM

Man, I'm feeling bad for the Russians here. This is just embarassing

SI

Lathum 02-24-2010 07:41 PM

If I have to hear them say during curling "the hammer is like a power play in hockey" one more time I may lose my mind.

bbor 02-24-2010 07:42 PM

Just wow...what a goal!

Logan 02-24-2010 07:44 PM

So, uh...who are the guys associated with this Russian team that are going to be hesitant to start their cars?

I actually agreed that regardless of who people thought was the "dominating" team in the Canada-U.S. game, the U.S. deserved to win, etc. Some of the arguments by U.S. posters were pissing me off, so I left the thread for hockey stuff. I come back here, and that's what I see again, "we Americans."

it was more directed towards my fellow Americans rather than the majority of you Canadians MikeVic.

jbergey22 02-24-2010 08:01 PM

Just curious is Luongo cold as well or because they are winning is he doing just fine?

DaddyTorgo 02-24-2010 08:02 PM

YAY CANADA!!!!

Dr. Sak 02-24-2010 08:42 PM

Way to go Dan Boyle.

Dr. Sak 02-24-2010 08:48 PM

Congrats Canadian fans....great win. Most impressive!

SirFozzie 02-24-2010 09:04 PM

Canada may not be #1 yet, but Russia's Definitely #2! :P

SirFozzie 02-24-2010 09:19 PM

And we have CONTROVERSY in the Short Track Relay.. I'm honestly shocked that they DQ'd the South Korean skater for that move.. didn't even look like there was real contact there!

Big Fo 02-24-2010 09:21 PM

Tough call against the South Korea relay team imo, but tack on another medal for the US despite finishing in dead last by half a lap.

sterlingice 02-24-2010 09:30 PM

WTF? Doesn't the lead skater have the right of way? I thought China should have been DQ'd if anyone was.

SI

sterlingice 02-24-2010 09:42 PM

Wow- what a rash of crazy crashes these last couple in bobled. And the brake-woman ejected. Amazing everyone has come out ok.

SI

sterlingice 02-24-2010 09:48 PM

Awesome! The USA underdog sled with a medal (probably bronze)! Canada will probably get gold and silver.

SI

sterlingice 02-24-2010 09:51 PM

Wow- that Canada 2 heat 4 was just so fast and got them the silver. But Canada 1 was the best sled out there all 4 times and they got the gold they deserved.

He looked ok to me on that save against Malkin.

But seriously, what goals would you fault him on? He made a couple big stops, a whole bunch of 'normal' stops, and let in 3 goals that were very nice shots/plays from talented hockey players.

So my answer? Not sizzling hot, but certainly not cold. A solid B+ performance.

Hi there, has this been posted?

I don't like that polka dot one. Too much fabric.

sterlingice 02-24-2010 10:02 PM

No, NBC, Mancuso's situation doesn't equate to Sven's. But thanks for the Monday morning QB'ing. They were running people down at 1 minute because of the conditions that obviously were deteriorating bad enough that they canceled the second run until tomorrow.
