That's a good point...I think I should put together an all-undrafted team as well. Or maybe a "Mel Kiper's Undrafted Board" with a top three at each position or something.
|
I'd be curious to pull back that old "All Time NFL Players" Draft. That's the only one I've actually participated in, and I think that I actually had a decent team there.
|
Sorry, who is up?
|
NoMyths. He said he wouldn't be able to post for about another 45 minutes.
|
I believe he said "At least 6pm"
|
Yeah - Vbb search sucks, I'm not finding much at all.

Previous Rankings:
Quote:
1. Maple Leafs (some fantastic picks mixed in with NO mistakes). 2. Axxon (you had to make the Stephen King pick, didn't you? A few strong picks could put him in the lead) 3. larrymcg421 (only one pick today, but a good one - if Oz is a children's book...?) 4. Chief Rum (short story's a classic, great poem, strong bio and I love the sci-fi pick) 5. Izulde (Unfamiliar w/ North Dallas 40, but Night is a strong bio pick) If I did six, it would probably be DaddyTorgo. Cartman's Kama Sutra may get voters, but I didn't like the pick too much, nor do I like his poem and Casey seems too childish for Sports (yes, those are all judgement calls. Welcome to the draft! :p) |
I'll send off the expanded info for my pick list to LS and WM, as I've got a 3 hour night class tonight, followed by fraternity stuff, so I probably won't be around when my next turn comes up.
|
Back...will pick shortly.

(On a random note - I used to start a lot more threads here, especially political ones. Guess I finally realized arguing on the internet rarely changed anyone's minds :) ) On a more topical note, I love this draft - both the idea and the ridiculous speed it has been run at. |

I think Casey at the bat is the best sports pick so far. |
Fiction
Single Short Story Poem: 2.5 - The Divine Comedy, Dante Alighieri Fantasy/Science Fiction: 7.6 - Neuromancer, William Gibson Series (A set of books continuing the same story and intended to be read sequentially) 3.6 - The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams Sport Related: 4.5 - Friday Night Lights, H.G. Bissinger Children's: 5.6 - Treasure Island, Robert Louis Stevenson Non-Fiction: 1.6 - On the Origin of Species, Charles Darwin Biography/Autobiography: 6.5 - Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave, Frederick Douglass History No comments. The cyberpunks will find and haxxor me. Internet culture, baby. PWN |
Science Fiction is by and large determined by the time that it was written in. However, all science fiction is about the attitudes of man and technology and the conflict that causes. The first full science fiction novel is one of the most vivid and has given rise to movies, plays, and parodies. That work is Frankenstein by Mary Shelley
Fiction - 3.7 Catch-22 by Joseph Heller Single Short Story - 5.7 Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes Poem - 1.7 The Iliad - Homer Fantasy/Science Fiction - 7.7 Frankenstein by Mary Shelley Series (A set of books continuing the same story and intended to be read sequentially) - 2.4 The Cronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis Sport Related 4.4 Ball Four by Jim Bouton Children's Non-Fiction Biography/Autobiography - 6.4 Profiles in Courage by John F. Kennedy History |

Great picks by CR. Ender's game was one of those series that get some bias points from me. One of my all-time favorites. |
Really good back-to-back Fantasy/Sci-Fi picks.

Agreed. Although I'm biting my tongue or at least holding back my fingers because I don't want to be that guy that talks too much strategy during the draft. Anyway, I think NoMyths is having a very strong draft and is one of the clear contenders to win it. |
Thanks, sabotai. And thanks EF -- I'm pleased to hear that my slate ain't going unnoticed. :)
|
Some really sucky picks today. :) A few good ones, one new category leader (maybe two, I have to look at Sports).
Since I'll be scoring by category and seeing how the participants fall out, I'll update the cateogry winners... |
Sweet sci-fi picks. I was wondering if Frankenstein would show up in sci-fi or not and I find myself glad it did :)

I agree with Frankenstein, I apparently was looking at an older version of the spreadsheet. |
My leaders are pretty close to Buc's.
Fiction: Maple Leafs (Axxon 2nd - I just can't, as much as I love Shogun, put it above Hamlet) Short Story: cartman (Rummy second) Poem: Warhammer (NoMyths second) Fantasy/Sci-Fi: st.cronin (Warhammer second - and NoMyths 3rd) Series: cartman (Axxon second) Sports: Warhammer (cartman second) Children's: larrymcg421 (Maple Leafs second) Non-Fiction: Izulde (cartman second) Bio/Autobio: larrymcg421 (NoMyths second) History: st.cronin (Maple Leafs second) |

Frankenstein is a huge pick this late in the draft. I might be completely ruining my rep here, but I'm going to have to go find out what the hell Neuromancer is.

Picking now...
|
1. Fiction - 1.8 The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, Mark Twain
2. Single Short Story - 5.8 The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, Washington Irving 3. Poem - 2.3 Paradise Lost, John Milton 4. Fantasy/Science Fiction - 7.8 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, Jules Verne 5. Series (A set of books continuing the same story and intended to be read sequentially) - 6. Sport Related 7. Children's - 6.3 The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, L Frank Baum 8. Non-Fiction - 4.3 Communist Manifesto, Karl Marx 9. Biography/Autobiography - 3.8 Mein Kampf, Adolf Hitler 10. History Surprised this one made it in so late, and actually had to check a few times to make sure it wasn't taken. Wouldn't be worth having a sci-fi/fantasy category if Verne wasn't picked. Very happy to get this one. |
Make that really good back-to-back-to-back Fantasy/Sci-Fi picks.

Alas, we finally disagree. I would put as back-to-wtf-to-back. :) |

I'm just pleased I finally cracked your hard candy coating and got some of the sugar underneath. Then again, ewwwww. Props for fantasy and autobiography? Although you should give me some Treasure Island love as well, considering your handle. ;) |

I can't keep it 100% up to date. :) I have to commute, make dinner, etc. |
Izulde is up?
|
Yep. I think he mentioned he was going to submit his list before heading out.

Terrific pick. One I considered myself before going with Walden (honestly, would have been a reach with my third pick, but not for long after that). |

Bastard. I was strongly considering Confucius for my nonfiction spot. |
Thanks, Chief. Yep, I was shocked and pleased it was still around -- I feel that it and Night are the two top choices in the category. Sided with Douglass because his book helped lead to the abolition of slavery, but I have a deep affinity for the other book as well.

Another really strong pick. This has been a very good drafting day. |
20,000 Leagues Under the Sea was one I was hoping would slip to my undrafted list ;) Nice pick with that. Surprised how strong the sci-fi category is so late in the draft.
|

Lol. That is a good pick but Seuss has become a cultural phenomenon and while I don't think many has read Baum anymore than Stevenson, the Oz movie is still one of those things. Still trying to figure out how to score Grimm, so it's strong category, unlike some of the other ones. |
Quote:
You're implying Neuromancer is a better selection than Frankenstein??? Izulde is up -- he sent me his selection but dinner just finished.. sorry guys, you'll have to wait a few! |
I'm here during break so I'll put my pick up.

1. Fiction - 2.2 Lolita - Vladimir Nabokov
2. Single Short Story 3. Poem - 1.9 "The Waste Land" - T.S. Eliot 4. Fantasy/Science Fiction 5. Series (A set of books continuing the same story and intended to be read sequentially) - 3.9 The Musketeers Saga - The Three Musketeers, Twenty Years After, Le Vicomte de Bragelonne, Louise de la Valliere, The Man in the Iron Mask - Alexandre Dumas 6. Sport Related - 5.9 North Dallas Forty - Peter Gent 7. Children's - 7.9 The Little Prince - Antonie de Sainte Expury 8. Non-Fiction - 4.2 The Art of War - Sun Tzu 9. Biography/Autobiography - 6.2. Night - Elie Wiesel 10. History Another short book, but one of the greatest children's stories ever. An engaging, mysterious, sympathetic figure is the Little Prince and the death scenes are quite touching. Wikipedia also says that it's used to in beginning French classes, which adds to its value, maybe. :D |

No, I got the order mixed up. Somewhere in there is a wtf for androids or something. |

That was several picks ago. Neuromancer-Frankenstein-20,000 Leagues were the last 3 picks. |
Quote:
Izulde, you're thinking elitist again. 1. Probably no child in America has heard of it. 2. They didn't make a popular movie from it. 3. It's French. |
Quote:
I'd argue that Neuromancer is at least its equal, and more so with most techies. Most of our ideas about online culture were shaped by the novel -- I mean, heck, Gibson invented the term cyberspace with it. Dramatically important book, and one that was critically hailed as well -- Time listed it as one of the 100 most important books of the last century, for example. Changed the direction of hard science fiction and led directly to things like The Matrix. |
Quote:
Ok, how about wft-to-back-to-back? Cool? :) |
I find Gibson a very tough read.
|
Oh, and World of Warcraft/Second Life? Yep, all sprung in various forms from Neuromancer -- philosophically, at least.
