I think it's up to the voters to punish the categorizations rather than the rule. Nobody would have stopped somebody from drafting Nate Robinson as a center. |

Esp. if we are permitted to "sell" our list before voting begins. You can make a case for one-hit wonders (when they are technically not) because that would be the only hit most can think of. With Imagine, I wanted that song (it's #1 on many lists) so I stretched love songs to mean ballads as well. |
True... though I guess it will be pointed out by the voters that some choices are just horrible and don't fit. And anyway, "God Bless the U.S.A." is probably poorer than a number of one hit wonders left :D.
|
Right now, I think lordscarlet is slamming this draft up its ass. All he needs is the money shot.
It's like a fuckin;' coronation is coming up. |
Quote:
Except his Classic and Epic picks pale in comparison to some others and his Trendsetter definitely belongs in One-Hit. Just sayin'. |
lordscarlet had a hall of fame first half, but his last few picks have been just meh. I still have him in the top group, though.
|
Re: one-hit wonders.
It's actually a very tough category to define. Most songs that we think of as one-hit wonders weren't there artist's only hit, especially if you look at artists from other countries or genres. Wiki has a cool article on this topic: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_hit..._of_definition |
I think Subby is the only one that hasn't made a questional pick. The rest of us has to go on our strengths.

I'd argue a bit with Madonna being a trendsetter only because I have a tough time thinking of much good music that followed her trend, other than her own. I guess female pop singers being skanks was a trend, and if so then may god bless her. |
I'm not a fan of Subby's list, at all, including his first round pick.

Now that is some campaigning! :) Quote:

 I knew Epic and Classic would run up a lot of good choices early. I decided to take things that were as strong as I could in shallow categories early. I hope the strategy works, and I think it has so far. I think my Epic and Classic picks are solid, but may not play as well to the voters as some other picks. I'm willing to accept that because I think they are quality picks. There are definitely some good lineups out there and hopefully I can round out my team with a good finish. |
Quote:
But there was a better one before that. Even if voters generally give me low scores on Imagine, I am hoping some of my other picks will make up for it. A team can still win by hitting nothing but 3-run HRs among strikeouts. |
Speaking of Subby, where is he? It's his pick. Doesn't he know he should be online at 2 O'Clock on a Saturday afternoon?
|
I think the Madonna pick was the biggest stretch yet.
|
I think Maple Leafs is damn solid (Thriller in round 5 helped), but the cover could have been better. He's definately one of the top lists so far, IMO.
|

I agree. |

Even with his lousy cover? Just sayin'. :) :) :) |

Says the guy with "Imagine" as his love song :p. |
I do have some picks from Subby but they're a few days old so I'm going to hold off and give him a chance to drop in. No point rushing, especially since I don't have another pick for Lathum at this point.

Uh, this is like the Houston Texans saying that drafting David Carr was a mistake, they should have taken Joey Harrington. |

Quote:
No it isn't... especially considering how the lists are going to be judged (by voting). I guess it depends on the relative worths of the crossover and cover songs you have to pick from (and the one you actually do). |
Is this going to be a straight up-down vote or will there be scores involved?
|
You like country. You like it with a rock edge. You like when country guys go a little rock. And you like it when satan gets his ass served in a fiddlin' competition. Here's the best crossover from my youth:

I don't see that at all. You don't think "Hurt" would be a quality cover song? |
I like what Oilers has done so far. I don't see a mistep for him so far.

Perhaps so, but there are plenty of this board who'd make the argument that Cash's "Hurt" is the greatest cover song of all time. |

Nice pick! Didn't stumble on the one-hit, so I think the list just improves in ranking. |
well darn it! now igotta find another one hit wonder.

I had it on my short list as well. |
Some times I feel like I've got to
Run away I've got to Get Away! plus that gives me a chance to have supremes songs on my list twice since it is a medley with Where did my Love go?
|
A grand slam home run by the deacon. Brilliant pick.
|
Yeah, plenty of GREAT one hit wonder songs. No reason not to wait until the final few rounds to pick one.
|
Quote:
- a song that everyone likes - a song that everyone knows is a cover (i.e. they know the original too) - a song that feels different enough from the original that it's not just a copy The list of songs like that is pretty short. Proud Mary for sure. Hurt, definitely. Knockin on Heaven's Door, I think so. All Along the Watchtower, yes. A handful of others. I don't think "I Love Rock and Roll", for example, is a great cover, I think of it as a great song that had orignally been recorded by someone else. There's a difference. Of course, the voters may have their own ideas... |
Strangely, my top picks in 3 categories have not been called.
I get the feeling I would not have scored well if I was playing. |
One Hit Wonder- Walking on Sunshine- Katrina and the Waves- 9.7
|
As we head into the final rounds, please check your list and make sure you're going to wind up with two picks with female singers, as per the rules.
|
I am amazed this song is still on the board. I almost didn't pick it because maybe there's something I'm missing that makes it a bad choice. For the 8th pick of the ninth round I select the One-Hit Wonder "Mickey" by Toni Basil.
Classic - 8.3 - "A Change is Gonna Come", Sam Cooke Epic - 6.3 - "Space Oddity", David Bowie Arena - 5.8 - "You Shook Me All Night Long", AC/DC Trendsetter - 2.3 - "Rapper's Delight", The Sugarhill Gang Love Song - 7.8 - "Unforgettable" - Natalie Cole with Nat King Cole One-Hit Wonder - 9.8 - "Mickey", Toni Basil Party - 4.3 - "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party)", Beastie Boys Crossover - 1.8 - "Walk This Way", Run-D.M.C. feat. Aerosmith Cover - Anti-Establishment - 3.8 - "Killing in the Name", Rage Against the Machine |
