My thoughts as well. |
I think the best Love Song is still on the board, at least if it was put to a popular vote. Might not quite fit the board, but it is also a Classic so you can't go wrong with it.
Only 3 players are eligible for it, will they pick it? Great thread ML. |
OK. Wade just alerted me that it was my turn last night. Luckily it appears everyone went to bed after Bucc's pick anyway. I'll get to work on my 7.3 pick right away.

It's time for me to roll out a classic. This song could have easily gone as an anti-establishment song, much as many of Dylan's songs could have. However, just as with Dylan, this is undeniably a classic. If you use American Idol as a barometer (and you probably shouldn't), it is easily the most used male audition song. I am going to round out the last of my Big Gun categories with "A Change is Gonna Come" by Sam Cooke.
Classic - 8.3 - "A Change is Gonna Come", Sam Cooke Epic - 6.3 - "Space Oddity", David Bowie Arena - 5.8 - "You Shook Me All Night Long", AC/DC Trendsetter - 2.3 - "Rapper's Delight", The Sugarhill Gang Love Song - 7.8 - "Unforgettable" - Natalie Cole with Nat King Cole One-Hit Wonder - Party - 4.3 - "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party)", Beastie Boys Crossover - 1.8 - "Walk This Way", Run-D.M.C. feat. Aerosmith Cover - Anti-Establishment - 3.8 - "Killing in the Name", Rage Against the Machine |
Great song, LS. You won't get any bother from me about taking it. :)

So far, I think the biggest misstep of the draft was the usage of Jimi. Plenty of great choices for him but his version of the Star Spangled Banner at Woodstock might be my #1 cover song ever. Whitney certainly sung it better than anybody else which would have made it a great choice as well, but Jimi's was the best original take on the song. And that is what makes it my #1, taking an already famous song and making a better version in your own style. Really, is there any more famous song in America? |

Guess everybody has a Love Song now, can't believe this song didn't get taken. Won't mention it since it could still be taken in another category. |
Quote:
I think very little imagination was put into the Love Song category. I'm pretty disappointed by that group of picks. |
Quote:
Love Song is one of the categories that's so deep there are a lot of great songs that have been left off. |

I chickened out on one or two picks, most notably Arena Rocker and Love Song. And I was three bourbons in for my Love Song selection. :) |
Quote:
Pffft. Barry White? More babies were conceived to my choice than probably any other song that'll be chosen. :D |
Quote:
I still have you #1, but it will come down to the cover song. |

I already mentioned my Arena Rocker plan since it's been chosen elsewhere. I can PM you my Love Song chicken out or wait until it's all over. Cover Song is going to be tough. It's like Love Song -- there are so many good choices. You could have taken your whole list as cover songs and just filled each category with one and still done very well. |

haha...word. |

Nope, the #1 in THAT category is the one that I'm talking about, but Barry White was a strong pick. |
Went through the lists with the wife and she has Subby in the lead, especially since he has an Arena spot open and there is a very strong option available there.
She also wants to echo that Imagine is the worst pick in the draft :) |

I also had a great love song that I didn't have the balls to take before the artist went off the board. It's a song that I think is a hands down winner if people know the song, but I was afraid not enough people know it.
"All By Myself", Green Day |

Never heard of it. |
Party- Louie, Louie- The Kingsman 8.4

Not surprising. It's a hidden track on Dookie. |
I am heading out for the afternoon, Mapleleafs inbox was full so Hoopsguy is gonna make my picks for me if I am not around.
I do have a question, if a band has a female lead singer does that count as a female artist? |
Quote:
I have been working on that assumption. |
I asked that same question Lathum. The answer Igot back is yes it counts.

If in doubt, PM me and I'll make a ruling. I'll go clear our my PM box. |
Classic -
Epic - 2.5 - Another Brick in the Wall — Pink Floyd Arena - 6.5-Do You Feel Like We Do--Peter Frampton Trendsetter - 1.6 - Good Vibrations - Beach Boys Love Song -7.6 - Baby Love--The Supremes One-Hit Wonder - Party - 8.5-Shout--The Isley Brothers Crossover - 4.5-I Can't Stop Loving You--Ray Charles Cover - 5.6 - Proud Mary--Ike and Tina Turner Anti-Establishment -3.6-London Calling--The Clash |
I was originally going to take this as a Love song but was worried about an Imagine-style backlash. I think it qualifies as a Classic in every sense, but will the voters punish me for being the only one without a rock song in that spot?
Classic - 8.6 - What a Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong Epic - 5.5 - Thriller - Michael Jackson Arena - 1.7 - Welcome to the Jungle - Guns N' Roses Trendsetter - 2.4 - Heartbreak Hotel - Elvis Presley Love Song - 6.6 Unchained Melody - The Righteous Brothers One-Hit Wonder - Party - 4.6 - 1999 - Prince Crossover - 3.5 - Ring of Fire - Johnny Cash Cover - 7.5 - Burning Down the House - Tom Jones & The Cardigans Anti-Establishment - |
Butter_of_69's choice (Butter, the first song on your list was already gone).
Classic - Epic - Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen, 1.4 Arena - Rock and Roll (Part Two) - Gary Glitter, 3.4 Trendsetter - Heart of Glass - Blondie - 8.7 Love Song - My Girl - The Temptations, 6.7 One-Hit Wonder - Party - Celebration - Kool and the Gang, 5.4 Crossover - Superstition - Stevie Wonder, 4.7 Killing Me Softly - The Fugees - Cover, 7.4 Anti-Establishment - Anarchy in the UK - Sex Pistols, 2.7 |
I was waiting on Blondie, suprised nobody used them for Rapture as Crossover.
|
and Rapture coulda worked for trendsetter too.

When did Sam Cooke become a rock artist? ;) |

I never knew Sam Cooke was a rock artist. :) Quote:

Blondie was my wuss out Love Song. I wanted to take "One Way Or Another". |
dola: Louis Armstrong is a great pick.

Pick coming up.

I think the conclusion I'm forced to draw is that fofc just doesn't understand love. |
Quote:
There are some great love songs still out there. Shoot! that was one reason I waited so long on that category. |

The first dance for my wedding will be one that only Wade and I have heard most likely. "Swept Away", The Avett Brothers. |
Quote:
Except I hate that song, so you couldn't have forced me to pick it. :) |
Sooooo many good choices for the One-Hit Wonder category. I went from wanting favorite songs to wanting mass-appeal songs to finally settling on a unique, yet undeniable, one-hit wonder. This artist has never been known for any other hit, yet still performs it to sold out arenas and audiences who sing every word from heart -- and don't feel embarassed to do so. If he were to come to an FOFC convention I have little doubt that he would be as warmly received as he is all over the country. Let's all wave flags:
Classic - 1.3 - Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan Epic - 3.3 - The End - The Doors Arena - 4.8 - Where the Streets Have No Name - U2 Trendsetter - 2.8 - Respect - Aretha Franklin Love Song - 7.3 - Can't Get Enough of Your Love Babe - Barry White One-Hit Wonder - 8.8 - God Bless the U.S.A. (I'm Proud To Be An American) - Lee Greenwood Party - Crossover - 6.8 - Lose Yourself - Eminem Cover - Anti-Establishment - 5.3 - Fortunate Son - Creedence Clearwater Revival |
Quote:
I wouldn't have argued with it there... I love it as a crossover because of the distance of the cross... |
Quote:
Um. Is our definition pop charts? Lee Greenwood has 25+ top 10 country hits and 7 #1 country hits (none of which are God Bless the U.S.A.) |
So you're saying he's got 8 hit wonder locked up?
|
Nothing personal, of course, NoMyths. I am genuinely curious about the critera we're using for one-hit wonder.
|
Quote:
The same criteria I used for Imagine? :) |
Quote:
I think that he means if you mention Lee Greenwood to Country fans, most will name this song as his one big hit. |
Lathum's pick (thanks to hoopsguy for sending it along):
Classic -Foxy Lady- Jimi Hendrix- 3.2 Epic - BaBa O'reilly ( also known as teenage wasteland)- The Who - 2.9 Arena - Iron Man- Black Sabbath- 6.9 Trendsetter - Smells Like Teen Spirit- Nirvana- 1.2 Love Song - At Last- Eda James - 4.9 ( heard at every wedding) One-Hit Wonder - Party - One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer - George Thorogood - 7.2 Crossover - Cover - A little help from my friends - Joe Cocker - 8.9 Anti-Establishment -American Idiot-Green Day 5.2 |
Quote:
That is certainly not the definition of a one hit wonder. Quote:
Well, that makes my cover decision a little easier. :) |
