It will be really interesting to see how people react to Smells vs Rappers...Smells is like 100% responsible for a 5 year trend, and Rappers is maybe 85% responsible for a 25 year trend that's been immense for the last decade. The 4th and 5th picks prove why neither of these songs was a trendsetter on the level of the first 3(two trendsetters for one trend?). Respect is a great song, and a solid move in terms of wrapping up a top woman, but I don't think of it as a trendsetter.

I couldn't disagree with you more here. Those that say Smells was directly responsible for the grunge movement do not know the grunge movement.

Rappers was much more directly responsbile for creating a genre, where Smells played a large part in a genre of trendy music that is basically dead now... To me Rappers is head and shoulders above Smells because it is more responsible AND the trend lasted longer.

Love Song - Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On (Theme from Titanic)

Oilers when everyone has made their picks in epic/classic and love song I will most the most epically awesome love song ever and its shear awesomeness will make you vomit for months.

You will all kick yourself that you missed this one.

Good save after that titanic of a pick :)

Oilers9911 02-23-2007 01:50 PM

And why is that? Sure its a horrible song but as horrible love songs go it was incredibly popular and you still hear it.

"criteria is which song is most directly responsible for a trend,". He's not saying Smells was the first. He's saying it was responsible for the trend.

The song makes me want to stick bad things in my ears, but a very solid pick if you think about it.

I agree, I don't see why all the hate for that pick. It might be the most bone jarringly annoying song ever but it's a fairly recent, very popular love song and it gets a woman pick out of the way.

I say that because of the audience that will be voting.

Could be wrong, but I see this board as a group that will have much Celine hatred.

Trust me, as do I. She is a blight on my fine nation of Canada :) But hopefully the voting audience will look past their hatred and look at the pick objectively.

st.cronin 02-23-2007 02:03 PM

I actually like Celine Dion. I don't like that particular song, though.

Should I have not mentioned that until AFTER the voting? :)

Warhammer 02-23-2007 02:19 PM

All Coming Back To Me Now is a better Celine song.

I just had my realization that all of the analysis in the world and masses are going to end up picking lists because their 1 favorite song is on there..

stupid masses..

Subby 02-23-2007 02:20 PM

I am pretty sure Bucc was at Chuck Berry's bar mitzvah...just some added flavor there.

Maple Leafs 02-23-2007 02:20 PM

lordscarlet is on the clock.

lordscarlet 02-23-2007 02:21 PM

Ground control to Major Tom
Ground control to Major Tom
It's time for lordscarlet's Epic Song

This is my biggest gamble yet. I think it's a solid choice, but I'm not sure how everyone else is going to feel about it. Everyone has pretty much diverged from ML's original "Epic" definition to what I feel is more appropriate. A sprawling, involved, lyrical song. With the third pick of the sixth round, I choose "Space Oddity" by David Bowie.

Classic -
Epic - "Space Oddity", David Bowie
Arena - 5.8 - "You Shook Me All Night Long", AC/DC
Trendsetter - 2.3 - "Rapper's Delight", The Sugarhill Gang
Love Song -
One-Hit Wonder -
Party - 4.3 - "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (to Party)", Beastie Boys
Crossover - 1.8 - "Walk This Way", Run-D.M.C. feat. Aerosmith
Cover -Anti-Establishment - 3.8 - "Killing in the Name", Rage Against the Machine

Warhammer 02-23-2007 02:22 PM

Bucc has me scratching my head. Good song but trendsetter?

Maple Leafs 02-23-2007 02:24 PM

Well, that certainly screws me over for this round. Thanks, ass.

Subby 02-23-2007 02:24 PM

Crap I was stronlgy considering Ziggy Stardust for trendsetter...

Warhammer 02-23-2007 02:26 PM

Good one LS.

Wade, that what much of it will boil down to in some categories. Trendsetters, Crossovers, and Anti-Establishment have some arguments that can be made one way or another. The others will to some extent come down to personal taste. How else do you define one song being more epic than another?

That said, the reason why I like that Celine song is it was written by Jim Steinman who I happen to really like.

lordscarlet 02-23-2007 02:26 PM

Whoopi for the block, Tom!

ntndeacon 02-23-2007 02:27 PM

lordscarlet that is an inspired choice. and it fits so well in the epic category

vtbub 02-23-2007 02:29 PM

thinking

Trendsetter is the toughest category to really nail imo. By definition the pool of potentials is so slim, it's pretty good when you can block it in another category when you already have a trendsetter.

I agree with you for how you should really analyze it. I just know FOFC and know that some people won't bother to look at it like that like they should and just say "GNR RULEZ!" or something ;)... not everyone, but a certain portion...

The nature of the beast and part of what makes it fun ;)

Karlifornia 02-23-2007 02:30 PM

I think Kiss' "Rock And Roll All Night" could have fit in solidly as a party song, but it does the trick in the arena category.

As far as Space Oddity Goes, I'm torn. It does have some epic qualities to it, I love the song, and I love David Bowie, but..I dunno.

vtbub 02-23-2007 02:41 PM

I must admit that big hair rock isn't my forte, but in thinking of an Arena song, the energy on the floor must have been prety incredible when this was played, plus it has an infectous quality even if you can't understand the words.

Mariano Rivera's Theme:

Arena- Enter Sandman-Metallica 6.4

Maple Leafs 02-23-2007 02:43 PM

Enter Sandman in round six is the Tom Brady of this draft.

Subby 02-23-2007 02:45 PM

You're right, I struggled with that too but I found I had more party choices than I did arena song choices.

I don't think so at all. First, I think a number of the Arena Rockers picked are certainly above it. And while I love Metallica, and in particular "Enter Sandman", I don't know that that is the top pick for Metallica, not even necessarily the top for Arena Rocker.

lordscarlet 02-23-2007 02:52 PM

I do think getting Metallica anywhere is a great pick, though, much less in the sixth round. I'm very surprised it was so far behind GNR.

ntndeacon 02-23-2007 02:53 PM

Someone said how they thought of my 2nd round pick as a great arena song. I have always viewed it as more an epic, when i think of an arena song, the first thought in my head is inevitably the same each time.

Classic -
Epic - 2.5 - Another Brick in the Wall — Pink Floyd
Arena - 6.5-Do You Feel Like We Do--Peter Frampton
Trendsetter - 1.6 - Good Vibrations - Beach Boys
Love Song -
One-Hit Wonder -
Party -
Crossover - 4.5-I Can't Stop Loving You--Ray Charles
Cover - 5.6 - Proud Mary--Ike and Tina Turner
Anti-Establishment -3.6-London Calling--The Clash

If I was playing Born to run would have been my first round pick. I am amazed The Boss made it to the end of the 3rd round.

Maple Leafs 02-23-2007 02:58 PM

OK, so I was going take Bowie's Heroes here as my love song. I've had in pencilled in for like three rounds. But noooo.... lordscarlet had to go and ruin it. Way to go, lord. Thanks for being selfish. Prick.

Luckily for me, now that My Heart Will Go On is off the board I can make this pick without worrying about being the biggest wuss of the draft.

Classic -
Epic - 5.5 - Thriller - Michael Jackson
Arena - 1.7 - Welcome to the Jungle - Guns N' Roses
Trendsetter - 2.4 - Heartbreak Hotel - Elvis Presley
Love Song - 6.6 Unchained Melody - The Righteous Brothers
One-Hit Wonder -
Party - 4.6 - 1999 - Prince
Crossover - 3.5 - Ring of Fire - Johnny Cash
Cover -
Anti-Establishment -

Lathum 02-23-2007 02:58 PM

I love metallica and condidered sandman but IMO that album began the downfall of what was at the time for me the greatest band in the world.
