Jeremy Roenick? |
Quote:
I hear you cluckin' big chicken...hehe Answer to your question... SKYDOG :D |
Quote:
So, is he going to blame it on Hackett's untimely retirement? Somebody other than Clarke has to take the blame... |
Quote:
Does Ken Dryden count? |
dola
It might be time for some shady players ML. We're overdue :) |
Quote:
Roenick is so bad that he didn't even shut up when his jaw was wired shut. "Hey everyone, I have a concussion. There are also spots on my x-ray. Um, my doctor says I could die any die now. Oh dear god please won't someone pay attention to me???" |
Eric Lindross' mother and father?
|
Quote:
Agreed. Though I hate the f*cker with the burning passion of a thousand suns, Roy's retort to Roenick mouthing off during the play-offs one year was classic. Roenick blabbed on and on about something and when the reporters asked Roy about what Roenick said, Roy replied "I don't know. I couldn't hear Jeremy Roenick because I had my Stanley Cup rings in my ears." Classic. |
Quote:
I remember that quote by Roy, though I thought it was concerning Van Biesbrook (sp). I could be wrong. You are the only person on earth who hates Roy by the way... RRRIIIIIGGGGHHHHTTTT He's such a skullf*cker. |
Quote:
Whatever happened to the Lindroses? They were all over the place for years and then, all of a sudden, Eric moves to New York and they disappear. I guess it could be the fact that Eric Lindros drifted into mediocrity since the concussion problems. Lindros has to have one of the most fascinating hockey careers ever. From the the whole modification of the junior draft thing, to Quebec drafting him, to Quebec trading him, to the concussions. Just amazing. Despite his many flaws, I thought he was an amazing player for a time there. Just an oustanding combination of size and skill. Though it did piss me off in 1997 when the Flyers beat the Penguins in the play-offs and, during the handshake, Lemieux whispered to Lindros "It's your time." Lindros' time? LINDROS' TIME? GO F*CK YOURSELF, LEMIEUX! IT'S YZERMAN'S TIME! (that was my response when I heard that. And luckily, I was right! :D ) |

I have no Shady Players™ right now, but here's a trivia question: name the only two players who hold the single-season goals record for two different franchises. |
Selanne holds the Ducks and Jets scoring records. I'm drawing a blank on the other.
|
Pavel Bure would be the second
With Vancouver and Florida |
Selanne and Bure are correct.
Here's another good question... It actually doesn't work so well on the internet since it's not difficult to look up the answer, but it's a good one to file away for when you're at the bar with your buddies. Of the NHL's all-time 25 leading scorers, seven played for teams that have since relocated. Name them. |
Point leaders? Francis with Hartford, Hawerchuk with the Jets. That's two. :)
|
oh Sakic with Quebec.
|
is Lafleur in the top 25? He played with Quebec too. That's all from the top of my head though.
|
ah, what's his face....trying not to look it up.
Last name starts with a G...mike or mark somebody. Played with the North Stars |
DOLA
GARTNER! |
Can't forget Mr. Coffey...he was traded to the whalers for shanahan.
So that is 6 if they are all right? |
crap...Gordie Howe played on Hartford as well. That would be 7 if they are all right.
|
Quote:
Damn straight. SI |
You guys got all seven. I'm surprised Howe was the last to go, usually he's the first one people think of.
And kudos for getting Coffey, he's the one people forget about. |
Quote:
The Coffey one was easy...if you live and die with Red Wing Conference and Cup losses. The Gartner one was sort of a cheat because I was playing an Eastside career 2 days ago. |

The more I watch the hit again and again on ESPN, the more I lessen my stance that it was a cheap shot (I think I just got caught up in the emotion of being there last night), but I just don't know how Maltby didn't see the door open. The video shows him looking toward that area as he goes to hit Klesla. I just hope Klesla's okay, he's not had any luck with injuries this year, going down to maybe a more dirtier play earlier in the year w/Scott Parker. Don't worry, I still hate the Wings. I'd like to see something develop between the two teams as the Jackets get a little better, if it came even half as good as the tOSU-Michigan football rivarly, that would be awesome. |
I would have never got Gartner without looking it up.
|
Quote:
Right on man...the NHL could use a good, close rivalry. |
Quote:
Me either, except for the fact he was talked about in a nothstars thread at a local music forum here. It was a good team (on paper) he was on that year. Modano was a rookie. Broten was there, along with Ciccarelli, Gagner, Bellows. cheaters never win! hehe |
Come BlackHawks, you bastards!!! I am willing you to win tonight. Yuk, I'm even pulling for a Red Wing victory.
|
Blues are looking pretty resilient despite detroit scorting a 3rd goal at the end of the 2nd.
|
Wow! Who would have thought that Calgary was the 4th best draw on the road this year beat out by only Detroit, Colorado and Vancouver!
http://sports.espn.go.com/nhl/attend..._avg&year=2004 |
Quote:
It's interesting, but every team draws about the same on the road except Detroit and Colorado. The difference between 92.8 for the 3rd best team and 84.8 for the bottom team just isn't that much. It just goes that show that when the Wings or Avs come to town, you sell out and everyone else gets 90%. That's supposing you have an average team and not something like the Hawks or Pens or Canes who get 60% for home games. SI |
right. and I guess Calgary gets bumped up to the top of the list because they play in a division with Vancouver, Colorado, and Minnesota who sell out ALL of their home games, and a fierce rival in Edmonton. so, right off the bat, almost all of their divisional road games are automatic sellouts.
|
Oh sure, spoil my fun. ;)
|
If you count up goals scored in the Nashville-Chicago game by players who have played for the Blackhawks at one point in this season, it's a 2-all game and Nashville only gets a point... ok, so it was a reach.
SI |
Quote:
The journey of a thousand miles starts with but a single step, kalyman! Good to see the ever-reliable Marc Lamothe pull the Wings' fat out of the fire. The Wings played a flat, uninspired hockey game but managed to pull it out. I guess at this point, after Nashville's back-to-back wins against the Chicago Wolves, I mean Blackhawks, you want to see Nashville win on Saturday. |
Quote:
I agree. I think this is what the NHL envisioned when they started up the Columbus franchise. I'd like to see a strong rivalry grow as well. The Michigan-Ohio State rivalry is a great launching pad for this. I've said it once, and I'll say it again: Columbus, you will not find a more wretched hive of sum and villiany. ;) |
Quote:
Is there any way both teams can lose? A Nashville win would eliminate the Oilers, since they would finish with more wins regardless of what the Oilers do against Vancouver. Since St. Louis plays Minnesota and they'll likely win that game, the best bet is Nashville losing against the Blues and losing against the Avalanche and the Oilers picking up at least a point agianst Vancouver. Yuk, now I really feel dirty, cheering for both the Blues and Avalanche. Oh hockey gods! Why do you torment me so? Quote:
Truth be told, one of my best friends is a huge Red Wing fan even though I don't recall him ever suffering inoperatable brain damage. Go figure. Anyway, the Wings fall behind the Oilers and the Flames on my pecking order of teams to support. And if he ever finds that out, I'm coming after you! :) |
This is what happens when you only make the playoffs once every eight years. :D

And it's nice to hear a playoff theme song that actually consists of more creativity than the name of the team you're playing followed by "sucks". |
[sings]
Avs suck!! [/sings] :) Edit: AND we've got Pantera. |
The local Ottawa sports station did a "Leafs Suck" song to the tune of Outkast's "Hey Ya".
In other words, they took out the words "Hey Ya" and replaced it with "Leafs Suck". Some clever stuff, I tell you. Clever stuff indeed. |
interesting connundrum for the Leafs tonight.
if they beat Ottawa, there's a very chance that they get rewarded by having to play Ottawa in the first round (IF Boston beats the Devils, that is). the whole East playoff situation is just crazy; amazing that the only team that has a particular spot locked up is Tampa, who will be the #1 regardless. All other 7 teams can change positions, in some cases drastically. wow. The West makes a little more sense, although the Nashville/Edmonton thing is still hanging around. Scott Walker's playoffless streak is going to get a huge hit from my negative karma, as I now have to root for the Oilers to beat the Nucks and the Avs to beat the Preds. Sorry Scott. |

That song is awesome and I'm not even a Flames fan! |
Hm.. it's almost time to retire this thread for the new-improved 2004 edition of the playoff thread.

Not yet. Go Oilers! |
Oh well. At least I don't hate the Predators. It looks the Oilers might get themselves knocked out tonight. I got home to see it 3-1 and watch it go to 4-1 before the second period ended. If they had just won a few more of those one-goal games during the rest of the season. Damn.
|
Bah! Hockey is dead to me. :(

Please, hockey gods, let it happen... |
DAMNIT!
Wow do some of those blown leads earlier in the year really come back to haunt the Oiler's now. Maybe this'll finally knock it into MacTavish's head not to sit on a 2 goal lead and try to trap instead of going for the throat and the 3 goal lead (especially if we've been playing well enough to get up by 2). And to think how crazy people thought I was in January when I told them the Oiler's would make the playoffs, now I still get to be crazy instead of insightful. Ah well. |
What a tough way to go into what may be the longest offseason ever.
|
GO BLUES! Were coming for you San Jose!

Come on. If they really hated you, they would make sure your team didn't win a Stanley Cup in your lifetime. :p |
LOL.
I really hope Iggy pots 2 today. A guy with -35 rating shouldn't win the Rocket Richard Trophy. It will be interesting to see if Nash gets named to the World Cup team. |
Isn't that -35 more indicative of the team he plays for? Only one player for Columbus played more games for them than Nash (Vyborny), and he ended up at -26.
As it is, it is going to be a tie between Nash and Kovalchuk who will have to share the award. |

I believe the hockey gods are giving us first round matchups of Boston/Montreal, Toronto/Ottawa, and Philadelphia/NJ. 3 really compelling series, IMO. I'm especially looking forward to the Leafs & Sens. I hope Calgary can slip ahead of Dallas today. while I respect the Flames a great deal, I don't want my Avs to have to face Turco in the first round (er, in any round). |
I'd rather the Avs and Stars meet, so at least one of them would have to depart early.
|
Actually, the Rocket Richard Trophy will be a three way tie because Iginla scored today.
|
Wow....Leafs spanked the Sens last night...i dunno if that bodes well for them in the play off series,or if it will fire up the Sens.

I second that! Heck, throw the Pukewings in there as well. Todd |
Without the Oil, it won't seem like the playoffs. :(

I agree. I would have rather seen them in. Even if Nashville was a better team, it doesn't seem right when classic teams don't make it. Same with teams like the Pens. Though, the Pens shot themselves in the foot...edmonton was in the hunt. |
Predictions
Tampa over Ny in 5 It wouldn't surprise me if NY wins, but I think there to inconsistent, and Tampa looks so good right now Montreal over Boston in 6 I think Theodore will do the same thing he did to Boston 2 years ago Nj over Philly in 6 Goaltending....enough said Toronto/Ottawa To biased to give a prediction......but the LEAFS ARE GOING ALL THE WAY Detroit over Nashville in 4 No repeat of last year....Detroit is'nt going to take Nashville lightly St. Louis over San Jose in 7 St. Louis fought so hard to make it, San Jose, I dont know, just something about them that doesn't scare me... Calgary over Vancouver in 7 Goaltending again will play a factor......and I think Iginla will shine... Colorado over Dallas in 6 Dallas will fight hard, and I suspect a few ot games here, but Colorado has too much talent....a low scoring series |
Woo-hoo!!!
Fantasy Hockey League Champions!!! A very close series. Just too much offensive punch from the Belgos. |
Yeah, my offense just couldn't muster enough to take down your team. Having Turco suspended for 4 games actually didn't hurt as Voukun picked up the slack. But it didn't help that you had an insane 7 game winning goals the last two weeks and I had quite the sinking feeling as soon as Belfour got the shutout a couple of nights ago to put you ahead in that category. I was scoreboard watching today, hoping to pick up the tie with assists, but your guys had outscored me 6 to 1 by about 3pm and, while I made it close, it wasn't to be. Congrats on the win- it was a great series that went down to the last day. And while a pair of Red Wings helped beat me, I take comfort in the fact that it took an Av to win you the title with his 19 PIMs ;)
SI |
Quote:
I was doing a little of same, some box score washing. I agree, after Belfour's shutouts I started feeling pretty good about my chances. I had given up on the rest of the goaltending stats and it basically came down to assists and potentially PIMs. The guys were clutch with the GWGs and Aucoin was a revelation with 7 goals in the last two weeks. No idea where that all came from. I think my team ended up with a lot more goals than assists, which is odd. Barnaby was also a nice addition at the end. Plenty of PIMs and even chipped in a few points. Very, very close and it really did come down to the last day of games. |

ESPN.com news services Linesman Ray Scapinello worked his 2,500th and final regular-season NHL game tonight in Buffalo, in the same city where he began his career on Oct. 1, 1971. Scapinello's 33-year career also includes 406 Stanley Cup Playoff games, 19 Stanley Cup Finals, three NHL All-Star Games and the 1998 Olympic hockey tournament in Nagano. Scapinello worked the Maple Leafs' 2-0 shutout over the Sabres with referee Terry Gregson and linesman Randy Mitton, both also retiring. Together, they have worked 6,754 games, including playoffs. ---------------------------------------- How sad to see Ray go. I always liked Ray Scapinello. I liked Mike Civik too, simply because he was like 6'8" tall and it looked funny when he towered over all the players when breaking up a scrum. I liked Pierre Shampoo too, but only because he had a funny name. So long, Ray, and thanks for the memories! |
Wasn't Civik the linesman that crushed that guy that jumped over the boards with skates on in Minnesota years ago?

For anyone interested...
I'm running (trying to run if I get enough interest) an NHL playoff pool over at the OOTP boards. http://www.ootpdevelopments.com/boar...threadid=58770 |

Lucky guess. :) |
Florida today fires Rick Dudley. Jacques Martin is rumored to be the new coach, and in a total WTF move, Mike "Franchise Dismantler" Keenan is being brought in as GM...presumably to trade away any remaining talent the team may have left.
|
Keenan would work as a GM. However unpopular his moves may be, they often have worked out eventually. Everyone laughed when he brought Pronger over to St. Louis, and he really developed. It was a big joke when he handed the job to Fuhr, and that worked out. He hasn't been able to call the personnel shots since being ran out of St. Louis.
|
Quote:
Sach is not only wise, but modest too! Florida needs a plan and it needs to stick to it, if Keenan and ownership is willing to do that, it will work out, right now they appear to be a franchise in dissaray. They do have a goalie to build upon and we've all seen how that can work out for teams in the past few years. |
Quote:
|
so, is Keenan still getting paid to not coach the Panthers? if so, will the Panthers be paying him twice?
|
He is still being paid not to coach and I doubt he will be paid twice. Teams are thankful when their former coaches/GMs get hired by other teams (except maybe San Jose ;)) because the contract is off the books...
From what I've heard, the owner in Florida is the guy who can't make up his mind. Any bets on how long Keenan lasts this time around? |
More like: how long before Keenan fires his "best friend" Martin and goes behind the bench himself?
|
I HATE Mike Keenan.
I would really love to see Keenan, Mike Milbury and Bobby Clarke go to one team (the Rangers?) so that I could HATE the entire team whole-heartedly. Clarke could be the President, Milbury the GM, and Keenan the coach (if there was room somewhere for Marc Crawford there, all the better). The could take turns running their star players out of town, and blaming someone else (usually the goalie) for their failures. Eric Lindros would need to be on that team (should be entertaining with Clarke). Darcy Tucker as well. I wouldn't mind seeing Alexei Yashin and Brian Marchment there also, but they would just be icing on the cake. |
couldn't we just put them all on the Avs, DD? Then everybody would be happy :D
