You shuttlecock!

Abe Sargent 05-13-2009 08:30 PM

By the early part of the 4th round with have an American chosen for every human category except artist and religious figure. That's crazy high.

DaddyTorgo 05-13-2009 08:32 PM

for the record i didn't want an American economist, but i was a bit...hemmed-in

Abe Sargent 05-13-2009 08:32 PM

I'm going outside the box for economist late with a random pick that people will love or hate.

DaddyTorgo 05-13-2009 08:34 PM

that's cool. i thought about going that way too

larrymcg421 05-13-2009 08:53 PM

Okay, I'm gonna get working to update the first post. Barkeep PM'd me that he will pick early in the morning.

MrDNA 05-13-2009 09:04 PM

I love that Hammurabi pick - non western and crazy important (although maybe low on the name recognition factor).

Re: Jim Brown - I don't think he's a bad pick at all! Jim Thorpe would've been my #1 USA Athlete because he was good at many sports like Brown and maybe a little more iconic, but you can't fault Brown. Too early? Yes, but if he didn't lose anyone else he wanted to pick, big whoop.

That's where I would have taken.Ghengis, but there's not much awareness of his social reforms and most people probably just know him from his military conquests so Military Leader might be a better choice in the eyes of the voters.

sabotai 05-14-2009 12:39 AM

dola,

I just looked on the front page. There is no "Military Leader" category. I guess he meant Army Chief?

This pick is intruiging... could go either way, guess it depends on how people are voting.

Barkeep49 05-14-2009 06:53 AM

Sorry there was a miscommunication. I didn't mind larry doing my next pick (sent him a list to do so), but if it came back around to me I wanted to pick.

Moses Lawmaker Egypt Pre-20th

Great pick and one of the two I eventually had as backups for Justiced Minister

Barkeep49 05-14-2009 08:08 AM

Thanks. I had just about decided to go in a different direction, when I thought of a really solid back-up for that category and so I decided to go with Moses.

There goes one of my picks. I've come close to picking her each and every round starting round 2, and each time I've held off. Alas. I was going to put her in Religious, but I think she's an even better pick in Civil Rights. Well done Abe.

DaddyTorgo 05-14-2009 08:51 AM

crap - i was thinking mother theresa for religious as well

I actually thought she would be better in Religious. Was she really even a civil rights activist? I mean, I know she was an activist, but most of her work had to do with the poor, homeless and sick and her activism was more in regards of taking care of them and raising awareness than having to do with civil rights.. or so I had thought at least?

DaddyTorgo 05-14-2009 09:12 AM

but you know what - you can make a case that she'd be a good civil rights activist because of that.

i think people are getting very tied down to "what the person actually did" as opposed to "what else they would be good at."

and i think at some point the draft may veer in that direction

Surtt 05-14-2009 09:48 AM

4.11 Louis Pasteur, Scientist, France, Pre-20th

Abe Sargent 05-14-2009 10:12 AM

Abe Sargent 05-14-2009 10:18 AM

Nice pick. Was the only other person I considered beyond Isaac Newton for my scientist. Well and one more guy who hasn't been chosen so I won't mention his name.

There's a Bolivar statue in the park across from my office.

Abe Sargent 05-14-2009 10:36 AM

Tōgō Heihachirō, Japan, Navy Chief, 20th

One of the best admirals of all time, but not great name factor. Perhaps a reach here, we'll see.

DaddyTorgo 05-14-2009 10:39 AM

Nice pick Abe

Noop 05-14-2009 10:40 AM

Simon Bolivar

I did a paper on him very interesting guy. I might need to get my notebooks to finish out the draft since I have studied a lot of people.

Abe Sargent 05-14-2009 10:41 AM

Thanks. I had Togo targeted as my 6th rounder and Churchill as my 5th, but I couldn;t really find anyone quickly so I just decided to go with Togo.

Surtt 05-14-2009 10:43 AM
