He's got nothing on Royals "starting catcher" Miguel Olivo who is 3 for 17 with 11 K's and 0 walks.

How about Tigs starting SS Adam Everett?

Why are all these terrible hitters in the Central?

MrBug708 04-16-2009 12:35 AM

Go Dodgers :)

At least he's not only in the league because the GM wants to show he got something in a trade where he got absolutely swindled. :(

Asshole. I needed those fantasy points.

SackAttack 04-16-2009 01:10 AM

Actually, I have Broxton, too, and the 9th inning rally means that Broxton got the W, so while I feel badly for Kershaw, at least I still got the W out of his heroics. Yay.

He is the 2nd player, behind Rondell White, ever to go 6-6 in hitting for the cycle, and he is the FIRST player in MLB history to do so in a regulation game.

Damn, boys.

Well, correction.

MLB history as defined as 'AL and NL,' yes.

MLB history defined as pre-1901, apparently not. ESPN says Sam Thompson was the last to accomplish the feat in a nine-inning game in 1894, which is why baseball-reference didn't flag it when I was looking it up earlier.

You'll have to be more specific. There's a couple of those on every team ;)

When Reyes gets one in completing his cycle, probably not. When John Olerud does it...maybe so :).

I'm surprised he hasn't been a bit better by now. What's up with Deolis Guerra these days? I'm assuming he's still far away.

Opened the season in A ball.

McCarver definitely sported wood after this Reyes play.

Well you got the Ks.

After watching yesterday, honoring Jackie Robinson by everyone wearing his number was one of the dumbest ideas imaginable.

Ksyrup 04-16-2009 11:14 AM

Yep, another good and well-intentioned idea run into the ground by Cap'n Overkill.

I think the K's single-handedly pulled me out of last, actually. Or if they didn't, Broxton adding 2 K's in the 9th and then getting credit for the W did.

Logan 04-16-2009 03:34 PM

Yankees in the process of getting bombed in the opening game at new Yankee Stadium, thanks to their shitty middle relief.

Ronnie Dobbs2 04-16-2009 03:47 PM

Also, if Sabathia hadn't labored so much, maybe that middle relief wouldn't have been exposed.

Ouch. Alex Gordon goes on the DL with a similar injury to what Alex Rodriguez has. Out 8-10 weeks most likely. Looks like the Teahan at 2nd base move won't last too long. He'll likely head back to 3rd base now.

Royals' Gordon will have hip surgery; earliest return is weeks away - Kansas City Star

sterlingice 04-17-2009 07:42 AM

Yeah, like the Royals offense needed help not scoring runs. But at least that puts Mitch Maier in the outfield instead of Hillman putting Spork there or something equally asinine. At least I hope that's what it does- no guarantees as Hillman isn't exactly a lineup making genius.

I guess this hip injury is the 2009 version of the sports hernia? It seems like every year or so, there's a rash of injuries diagnosed as some obscure/unknown or not well publicized injury. Kinda strange.

I'm sure there are ex-jock nursing home residents all across the country claiming they have the same injury as Alex Rodriguez (and now Alex Gordon). :D

500 for Sheffield!

JonInMiddleGA 04-17-2009 08:49 PM

Down on the farm tonight, former Ga Tech star Matt Weiters gets the first hit ever at the new Gwinnett Braves stadium. Would have gotten the first run too most likely but had to be removed for a pinch-runner after suffering a "mild hamstring cramp", he's now listed day-to-day.

Speaking of the new G-Braves, former wrestling fans might get a kick (like I am) out of hearing their play-by-play announcer: Tony Schiavone.

A very strange, probably one of the most anticlimactic 500th HRs in history. I can't think of any situations where a guy who would be 1 HR away from 500, released from their former team, just to hit their 500th with another team.

I'm going to have to watch the replay later tonight, but I wonder how the Mets fans even reacted to the home run. It was a home run that tied the game, so they were probably more excited about that than anything else.

I still say that Sheff doesnt make it through the year with the Mets. I think he gets released at some point and quietly fades away. I can't see him latching on in some sort of coaching role in the future.

Wow, is that the former WCW announcer? I haven't followed wrestling since the mid 90's, but that name does ring a bell.

Yep, that's him. He's the sports guy for a (pretty good) news/talk AM about 45 minutes north of Atlanta. Does high school football pre-game shows on Friday night and is apparently the voice of the new Gwinnett Braves as well.

Well apparently they all gave him big hugs and there was a standing ovation and curtain call for Sheff.

Mets fans have really accepted him, probably because he is Goodens nephew. They went nuts for him, and have been going nuts each at bat.

I think as long as he keeps the right attitude he sticks, apparently Wright loves him.

true, and in a big spot of a game

The naysayers are already out of the woodwork here. We'll need one of these games this weekend to stem the tide a bit.

Kubel for the Twinkies hits for the cycle tonight. Apparently it's the "in" thing to do now ;).

USFLTecmo 04-17-2009 11:43 PM

I wish we'd just have Suppan go against Santana. Might as well not put both games in jeopardy. I like Gallardo, and he's not quite there yet, but he'll be a good one very, very soon.

Mr. Sparkle 04-18-2009 12:34 AM

Giants finally get another victory, snapping their 6 game skid with a 2-0 over Dan Haren and the Dbacks. Haren is suffering from Matt Cain-itis early on. He's 0-3 with a 1.89 ERA.

That does hurt, although I would say the starting pitching injuries (and, umm, death) have hurt the Angels more, along with an uncharacteristically poor bullpen to start the season (just about everyone in the pen is pitching below their ability and past performance right now).

I'm not trying to make light of Vlad getting hurt. I mean, that's a huge bat to lose. But fact is, at this stage of his career, Vladdy's about a .300-25 HR guy (good, not superstar), on a team with a bunch of .280-20 HR guys. Angels weren't going to blow teams out with or without Vlad. No, if anything hurts them, it will be the inability of the pitching thus far to keep opposing offenses in range of the Angels' hitting.

There is a possible bright side--the Angels might bring up Brandon Wood and give him a regular lineup spot, and by all accounts, the kid's finally ready. Or Napoli will get more DH bats, which will actually provide us more power than Vlad (or anyone else currently on the team actually), although less average-contact-abject fear, of course.

Danny 04-18-2009 02:51 AM

Dodgers have the second best record in baseball and the highest run differential so far!

ISiddiqui 04-18-2009 09:39 AM

From the NY Times re: Sheff's 500th

Quote:

The crowd of 36,436 erupted as he raised his arms and looked into the Mets’ dugout, which emptied to greet him near the on-deck circle. Jose Reyes reached him first, wrapping him in a big hug, and the game was paused for about three minutes as Sheffield accepted congratulations and responded to the crowd’s standing ovation with a curtain call.

So I'm thinking they were excited for Sheff ;).

Mizzou B-ball fan 04-18-2009 10:12 AM

Man, the Royals are playing some great baseball right now. They have a league leading 32 runs allowed and Jacobs and Crisp are really coming on. What's even more surprising is that they are playing so well without what are arguably their two best offensive threats. 1st place feels good.

Greinke's going today, so another win is an awfully good possibility.

TheNorm 04-18-2009 12:04 PM

Justin Verlander looked like an absolute ace for the first four innings against Seattle last night, I'm talking no-hit type stuff...and then the fifth inning happened and everything just imploded.

The Tigers need the 'ace' of the staff to start pitching like the Ace of the staff, and soon.

If things keep up like this, I'll go ahead and predict Johan Santana's end of season line:

8-4, 2.21 ERA.

Looking at his stuff this year (he seems to have gotten 1-2mph on his fastball back) I'd be tempted to take the under on that ERA.
