Gotta take issue with two of the covers b/c I think the original should be somewhat successful and neither Nothing Compares... or I Love Rock and Roll... were that.

I think of great Cover as exactly the opposite of that....a great cover obscures the original in my mind...it's so distinctively the covering artist's song that the general public doesn't even know that there was an original. |

Not in a long time. Besides, I just googled 'greatest wedding songs' and on the first several lists or CDs that came up, the song wasn't on any of them. |

I agree. :) |

I'm right in the middle of this. I think the important thing is that the "cover" be of high quality. Whether the original is superior or inferior makes no difference in my judgement. |
Weird, I just googled greatest love songs and it was on the first list I found

Yeah, way down on the list below Billy Joel. :) You would think a great love song would also be on a great wedding song list. |

Hendrix pick is the bust of the draft... I think there are better choices for him for classic but he probably should have been used for cover where I think he would have owned the category (Watchtower or Star Spangled Banner). Also a little surprised by the use of Who for Baba O'Reily. Its an amazing song, but I'm not sure enough people will recognize it by name compared to some of their other stuff.

I think that Gary Glitter goof is the "reach" of the draft. There's a couple of other songs that are weak, as well, but considering the options that were open the arena category, that pick was just insane.

Epic category easily has the most whiffs, I think...

There was a song I wanted to put in under Epic but I wondered what you guys thought. I'll wait until we're done to ask.
|
I took my all-time favorite band with my first pick, so I might as well take my second favorite with my last pick.
This one may not have the instant recognition factor of the others... I suspect you had to be young in the early 90s to really get it. I remember going to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in like 1997 when they had a display on youth anthems from each decade, and this song was #2 behind Smell Like Teen Spirit for the 90s. I'm not sure it's held up all that well over time, but it still kicks ass and was also the breakout hit for one of the most critically acclaimed acts of the last 15 years. And besides, as Rage Against the Machine would later demonstrate to perfection, nothing really makes a great anti-establishment song like a course you can chant at the top of your lungs when you're drunk. Bow down before the one you serve, you're going to get what you deserve... Classic - 8.6 - What a Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong Epic - 5.5 - Thriller - Michael Jackson Arena - 1.7 - Welcome to the Jungle - Guns N' Roses Trendsetter - 2.4 - Heartbreak Hotel - Elvis Presley Love Song - 6.6 Unchained Melody - The Righteous Brothers One-Hit Wonder - 9.5 - 99 Luftballons - Nena Party - 4.6 - 1999 - Prince Crossover - 3.5 - Ring of Fire - Johnny Cash Cover - 7.5 - Burning Down the House - Tom Jones & The Cardigans Anti-Establishment - 10.5 - Head Like a Hole - Nine Inch Nails |
Butter_of_69's choice
Classic - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road - Elton John - 9.4 Epic - Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen, 1.4 Arena - Rock and Roll (Part Two) - Gary Glitter, 3.4 Trendsetter - Heart of Glass - Blondie - 8.7 Love Song - My Girl - The Temptations, 6.7 One-Hit Wonder - Take On Me - a-ha - 10.7 Party - Celebration - Kool and the Gang, 5.4 Crossover - Superstition - Stevie Wonder, 4.7 Killing Me Softly - The Fugees - Cover, 7.4 Anti-Establishment - Anarchy in the UK - Sex Pistols, 2.7 |
Not a bad song, but I'm baffled by how it fits the category.
|
What do I like best about my final pick, for Party song? The most famous simile in at least the last fifteen years worth of music? The crossover appeal? The fact that it's an eminently enjoyable tune? Or the fact that unlike most songs that are associated with parties, this one wouldn't be banned on my iPod (Exhibit A: Celebration. Brrrrr). Since my explanations haven't really meant much thus far, I suppose I'm just entertaining myself at this point...but at least I've got a great playlist to pass the time, topped off by this raucous burst of energy:
Classic - 1.3 - Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan Epic - 3.3 - The End - The Doors Arena - 4.8 - Where the Streets Have No Name - U2 Trendsetter - 2.8 - Respect - Aretha Franklin Love Song - 7.3 - Can't Get Enough of Your Love Babe - Barry White One-Hit Wonder - 8.8 - God Bless the U.S.A. (I'm Proud To Be An American) - Lee Greenwood Party - 10-8 - Hey Ya - OutKast Crossover - 6.8 - Lose Yourself - Eminem Cover - 9.3 - Nothing Compares 2 U - Sinead O'Connor Anti-Establishment - 5.3 - Fortunate Son - Creedence Clearwater Revival |
I think you all will be happy that I am broadining my horizons with this pick. It was one of the first songs that combined rap with hard core metal. SLAM by ONYX and BIOHAZARD
Classic -Foxy Lady- Jimi Hendrix- 3.2 Epic - BaBa O'reilly ( also known as teenage wasteland)- The Who - 2.9 Arena - Iron Man- Black Sabbath- 6.9 Trendsetter - Smells Like Teen Spirit- Nirvana- 1.2 Love Song - At Last- Eda James - 4.9 ( heard at every wedding) One-Hit Wonder - Four Non Blondes - Whats Going On? - 9.2 Party - One Bourbon, One Scotch, One Beer - George Thorogood - 7.2 Crossover - Slam-Onyx and Biohazard-10.9 Cover - A little help from my friends - Joe Cocker - 8.9 Anti-Establishment -American Idiot-Green Day 5.2 |
Let's get this last pick out of the way so I can post my list :)

I assume you are talking about "Head Like a Hole" (great song, btw) here. It's basically an anti-consumerist song. And one can see it as against the capitalist society that makes money a God. |

You know who you are. Looks easily Anti-Establishment to me |
And with the final pick of the 2007 FOFC Music Draft, the Virginia Subbys select I Want Candy - Bow Wow Wow and place it in the one-hit wonder category. Great early MTV staple with awesome special effects!
Classic - Stairway to Heaven, Led Zeppelin (1-1) Epic - Freebird, Lynyrd Skynyrd (3-1) Arena - Ozzy Osbourne, Mama I'm Coming Home (8-10) Trendsetter - Like a Virgin, Madonna (6-10) Love Song - Lola, The Kinks (5-1) One-Hit Wonder - I Want Candy, Bow Wow Wow (10.10) Party - O.P.P., Naughty By Nature (7-1) Crossover - The Charlie Daniels Band, The Devil Went Down to Georgia (9-1) Cover - You Really Got Me, Van Halen (4-10) Anti-Establishment - Fuck Tha Police, N.W.A. (2-10) |
Classic - Sweet Caroline, Neil Diamond
Epic - Paradise by the Dashboard light, Meatloaf Arena - Living on a Prayer, Bon Jovi Trendsetter - Hit me baby one more time, Brittney Spears Love Song - Let's get it on, Marvin Gaye One-Hit Wonder - Electric Slide, Marcia Griffiths Party - Pour some sugar on me, Def-Leopard Crossover - Crazy in Love, Beyonce & Jay-z Cover - Sweet Dreams, Marilyn Manson Anti-establishment - Say It Loud (I'm black and I'm proud), James Brown Classic - I had a lot to chose from here but ultimately went with the Fenway Park favourite as tribute to my last month in Boston. I have no idea how this will do with voters outside of New England Epic - This song kicks all kinds of ass. This is easily my favourite pick out of the whole list. I think this song is probably Top 4 epic out of all the ones picked Arena - Dude no one pick Bon Jovi, what is wrong with you people Trendsetter - She started the whorey-pop trend and is now working on crazy bald chick trend. Look out world! Love Song - This category is about making babies, and other than Barry White there is no song that has created more babies One-Hit Wonder - So many great songs to chose from. I decided to go with the first ever line dance. It's horrible, it is still being played at everything. You know all the words, and don't kid yourself you know the dance Party - Def-fucking-leopard, again what is wrong with you people. I mean this category is about sex, drugs, rock n roll not a wedding song that gets grandma off the floor to dance with all the middle age women who are trying to relive their 20s. Crossover - This pick is shitty, I know. I can't think of any goods ones that were not picked already. The best one was picked in round 1 anyways and no others are even close. I could have gone with about 10 lame songs for the last 5 years so I ended up going with two people who are very recognizable and a song that was #1 for a while Cover - My thing with Covers is the original needs to be know and be a hit in its own right. The cover should also be successful and really be a tribute to the artist making the song his own. With that said I hate both versions of this song but both were hits. Anti-establishment - James Brown needs to be picked and this is not only a great song but fits nicely with the race issues at the time of its release |
Quote:
I had this on my list of possibles, I just didn't think it was that great. Quote:
Didn't we already say Madonna started that trend? Quote:
Ummmm. No. That is just 1,000% inaccurate. Overall some good picks. I think it's very different to pick at the end than during the event, but good nonetheless. One thing is the worry about "blocking" people and being "blocked." You generally picked some good artists, so I can't use this excuse much, but I don't think anyone would have been worried about someone else taking Neil Diamond or Brittney Spears. :) (This is primarily just me making an excuse, I think they're good picks -- A number of them were on my "short list" including "Sweet Dreams" and Meat Loaf) |
Quote:
are you taling about onyx/ Biohazard? |

And the electric slide was a pure cheese selection, there are tons to pick from. I think it is a very difficult category because you could go all over the place
|
I'll throw in a list of undrafteds:
Classic - White Christmas - Bing Crosby Epic - Mr. Roboto - Styx Arena - California Dreamin' - The Mamas and the Papas Trendsetter - Superfly - Curtis Mayfield Love Song - Stand by Me - Ben E King One-Hit Wonder - True - Spandau Ballet Party - Let's Groove Tonight - Earth, Wind and Fire Crossover - How Do I Live - LeAnn Rimes Cover - La Bamba - Los Lobos Anti-Establishment - Land of Confusion - Genesis |
Quote:
Those bottom 3 are great. I toyed with LeAnn for my crossover. Blue was a great song and was a rairity on the country charts as well, being an actual country song as supposed to bad pop with a steel guitar. |
Nice crossover pick. And you didn't use any of my artist which makes it cooler.
|
Quote:
You are correct, sir. :) |
Quote:
The ones I had the most trouble with were Arena and Epic. Toyed with Mrs. Robinson for both. But I needed another girl. And I just like "Mr. Roboto." |
And Thanks for the compliment.
I thik it's between LS and Subby. Subby really finished strong. I still go for LS, though. |
Scoring
I'm going to score max 10 pts per category. I also added a "Misfit Toy" in each slot, based on what's still available at this juncture. I complied with the two woman rule, just for fun.
Quote:
I think Stairway frequently ranks up there in any ranking of all time rock songs. I think it's the most "perfect" song on this list...innovative, stands test of time, interesting lyrics performed by a wonderful voice. Rolling Stone is a favorite, but let's face it folks, Dylan doesn't have a great voice. I think the Beatles are the number one rock band of all time, but for a single outing, I think the Stairway is Don Larsen's perfect game in the world series...well, had that been thrown by a pitcher who was a hall of famer without having thrown it. Great value in round ten to get My Way. Misfit Toy: Every Breath You Take, The Police. For my money, the best song not thus far selected. Quote:
I think Another Brick in the Wall is the most Epic...it's just a big sounding conceptual piece that feels "Epic-y" to me, though I find this a hard category to score and though about awarding it to American Pie several times...and briefly about Freebird. Misfit Toy: Paradise By the Dashboard Light, Big and orchestral, long and winding. Cheesy too... Quote:
I think of Arena rock as a great concert song in a big venue...usually I think that means metal....I love Bruce as much or more as anybody, but I don't think this is a good category for him (nor is it his best entrant for the category, Born to Run). I am not sure what to do with Gary Glitter (other than keep him away form your kids), his song is played repeated in Arenas, but not live.... Misfit Toy: Alive, Pearl Jam. Quote:
This category is the one which sparks the most debate. In the end, my criteria is which song did the most to popularize it's a significant suceeding music movement...had this been a tie, I would have looked at the size of the movement. In my mind, it's not that close to look at the second criteria. Madonna gets an 8 from me because I think she's largely responsible for the MTV based musician. Misfit Toy: Money for Nothing, Dire Straits - Money the album was the first big CD and the video was groundbreaking. Quote:
Giving Imagine a 5 is painful to me, I can't do any better in this category. Lola also...it's too goofy to be a love song. I went with Unchained after tossing it about with At Last for a long time....In the end, I went with Unchained Melody because it's slightly more recognizable I think...I had Baby Love on the eight level for a long time, but took a point because the song is kinda bitter/angry really. Misfit Toy: In Your Eyes, Peter Gabriel - I know even reading the song title will make you want to go find a boom box to hold up. I think this song could have won this category had somebody picked it. Quote:
Misfit Toy: Margaritaville, Jimmy Buffett - Not just a song but now a restaurant chain. Quote:
Misfit Toy: Blinded By the Light, Mannfred Mann's Earth Band....fits my criteria of obscuring a huge artist. Quote:
Misfit Toy: They Don't Know, Tracy Ullman - I like her as a choice because she obviously did have other hits in another field, so she presents irony factor. The song is really catchy as well and I don't know how much work they needed to do on her voice but it sounds excellent. Quote:
Another tight category. All of these songs are Anti Establishment. For me, the most anti establishment of the group is Anarchy is the most angry and snarling of the group, but if this is a kennel, all these dogs can bite. Misfit Toy: Ohio, CSNY- I think this song is more representative of the anti Vietnam sentiment than CCR's Fortunate Son which made that list. I think this song, if it had been selected could have won this category. Quote:
Sucess in this category involves the artist singing in a style for which they aren't known in my mind, although I'm sure some will read it differently. Thus the low marks for Devil, Billy Joe and On The Road, where I still think the country artists are singing country (it's just country that got popular). Walk This Way wins for me because you two huge bands working out of Genre in different portions.... Misfit Toy: Man, I feel Like a Woman, Shania Twain - Considered Melissa Etheridge and Leann Rhymes also, but in the end, who wouldn't want to have Shania on their team. Final Totals, in a real close race(edited, I miscounted Deacon): NtDeacon - 88 MapleLeafs 85 LordScarlet 84 vtbub - 83 Lathum - 82 Butter - 80 Subby - 80 Buccaneer - 78 Oilers - 77 NoMyths 65 |
I was going to choose an undrafted team, and you just snagged most of the ones I had in mind. I was absolutely stunned that no-one chose "In Your Eyes" by Gabriel. Big mistake, IMHO. Solid overall artist, huge song, and you get the bonus 80s tie-in from stuff like Say Anything and every other movie it's been used in.
|
Quote:
First off, great job. There are some real solid teams here, and I think trying to grade them is a tough task. My question here isn't really with my pick for a crossover, but Subby's. That's more of a Southern Fried rocker than a pure country, although I think we interpeted the definition of crossover a bit different. Also, say I had gone with Dolly Parton's 9 to 5 or Dolly and Kenny Rogers Islands in the Stream, would that have met your definition better? Not trying to be picky, you did a great job. |
Just a couple thoughts
#1 When a man loves a woman for love song? #2 No one picked a Grateful Dead song...not sure which one where but damn there are a lot of dead heads... #3 Jimmy Buffet...Same as #2. #3 Pearl Jam - last kiss for cover |
I thought about taking the dead for my anti-establishment one, since they were the ultimate a-e rock band. The problem was finding a single.
(Wasn't Dylan on Touch of Grey?) |

Quote:
That's one of the less cut and dried categories, so scoring it is tough. I think it certainly can be read as "artist from specialty genre achieving mainstream success", but that isn't how I read it. I think both of these songs would have suffered for the same reasons for me. I was more looking for something along the lines of "Picture" by Kid Rock/Sheryl Crow, "Rapture" by Blondie, or "Honky Cat" by Elton John. |
Just for the heck of it:
Some of the songs I was expecting. Classic - Heartbreaker -Pat benatar Epic - Paradise by the dashboard light - Meat Loaf Arena - Money for Nothing - Dire Straits Trendsetter - Rock the Boat - Hues Corporation (first Disco song) Love Song - The Rose - Bette Midler One-Hit Wonder - Smoking in the Boys Room - Brownsville Station Party - Life's Been Good To Me (So Far) - Joe Walsh Crossover - Margaritaville - Jimmy Buffet Cover - Me and Bobby McGee - Janice Joplin Anti-Establishment - Ohio - Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. |
Quote:
When I was doing my Misfit Toys I really thought about Pearl Jam's Jeremy as Antiestablishment song too... I think there are some more strong groups that didn't make the list and I just couldn't quite find a spot for them: REM - thought about maybe Radio Free Europe as a trendsetter(Indy Music)... Simon and Garfunkel - Thought about Mrs Robinson as the classic or possibly Bridge over Troubled Water (might have been a decent Epic Too). Bonjovi - was mentioned in the thread already but there are a bunch of Bonjovi songs that could have been slotted and competed. I think musc is so deep that you could draft another ten rounds and fill slots with strong choices. |
I actually did a misfit toys as well. the crossover one is the one that I was hving trouble with. tried to stay away from popular country hits. endd up with a rock standard that transfered into the country charts
Classic - Sunshine of My Love--Cream Epic - Ballad of the Edmund Fitzgerald--Gordon Lightfoot Arena - Rock you like a Hurricane--Scorpions Trendsetter - Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag--James Brown Love Song - Lets Stay Together -- Al Green One-Hit Wonder - Come On Eileen--Dexy’s Midnight Runners Party - Dancing in the Street-- Martha and the Vandellas Crossover - Me and Bobby McGee--Janis Joplin Cover - American Woman--Lenny Kravitz Anti-Establishment - What’s Going on? Marvin Gaye |
Good job dude, but I added up 85 for me :)

SO the verdict is great write up but poor math skills :)

Well istill don't like his definition of a great cover.
|
I still think a cover should be identifiable at least as much as the original. I did not even know that I love Rock and Roll was performed before Joan Jett got her hands on it. Just like I would not have called Tainted love a cover.
|
Quote:
I agree. A cover should have a recognizable original or else it's just you performing a song someone else wrote. Just about every country song had an original writer that performed a demo tape version of it at a minimum. |
Quote:
You are correct...I think I missed a category on you somehow.... |
My misfit toys lineup:
Classic - Mrs Robinson - Simon and Garfunkel Epic - Aenema - Tool Arena - Alive - Pearl Jam Trendsetter - Radio Free Europe - R.E.M. Love Song - Time after Time - Cyndi Lauper One-Hit Wonder - Louie Louie - The Kingsmen Party - Dancing in the Street - Martha and the Vandellas Crossover - (Sittin' on) the Dock of the Bay - Otis Redding Cover - I Will Survive - Cake Anti-Establishment - Ohio - CSNY |
DOLA, epic was probably the hardest to fill and crossover the hardest to understand the meaning of (I went with an artist achieving mainstream success with a stylistic departure for my pick there).
|
My biggest dissapointment is that Bon Jovi wasn't selected by any of the teams :(
|
Quote:
No She Bop? |

While I understand your crossover definition, it's not the one Maple Leafs laid out in the rules. |

Quote:
I would have taken Meatloaf for my epic if Freebird hadn't still been around in round 3. |
Given that many people are interpreting Crossover to be someone from achieving mainstream success from another genre, I'm shocked that (unless I missed it) we've had zero mention of Garth Brooks.
Also, given that a woman was required, I had a deep sense of dread that someone would take Sweet Child of Mine by Sheryl Crowe as a cover. If they had, I was going to delete the thread. |
i figured Crossover would be pretty hard to fill, which is why iwent with Ray Charles. I can't stop Loving you is definately not in his normal genre.
