Yeah, i'd easily put it in the other category.. that is if i had a gun to my head and HAD to pick that song at this point. |

Wait, do posts in this thread count? |

I don't think they do cronin. it is just your imagination. |

you've entered .... The Cronin Zone. (hums the theme to Twilight Zone in my head) |
Actually, ntn, I have my own theme music.
|
Maybe cronin, but that music is not in my head. (I think I am tankful for this. :) )

OK. I should go to bed.
Maple Leafs: My list I sent to you is no longer valid. I've picked two of them, and I am holding off on the third for now. I doubt it will get back to me before I wake up, or probably before I get to work even (9:00 EST or so). But wade should be around and can handle things if necessary. |

Thanks for getting that stuck in my head. I stand by my pick. :) |
Everytime lordscarlet picks, I mark someone off my draft board
|
OK folks, I'm back. Sorry to disappear last night with no warning, the little one decided to get cranky and "I have to go post on a message board" wouldn't have gone over too well.
Here's my pick: Classic - Epic - Arena - 1.7 - Welcome to the Jungle - Guns N' Roses Trendsetter - 2.4 - Heartbreak Hotel - Elvis Presley Love Song - One-Hit Wonder - Party - 4.6 - 1999 - Prince Crossover - 3.5 - Ring of Fire - Johnny Cash Cover - Anti-Establishment - |

Glad I could be of assistance! It just makes it easier for you to pick, right? Narrows down your choices. :p |
Quick thoughts on some picks:
Imagine -- Risky move, some voters will punish, others won't care. We'll see. I Will Always Love You -- There were two seperate times in the draft when someone had sent this in as a pick, but I held off just in case they changed their mind. It's a great pick, especially with the female requirement, but it's also the sort of thing that a few voters will squawk about. "You picked that song, I can never vote for you!" Sort of like picking Titanic in a movie draft. And by the way, as we go there will be a lot more of those types of picks out there. lordscarlett -- You like rap, don't you? If you pick Ice T's "99 Problems" as a love song, I'm going to start to worry. |
I think that Prince one is pretty solid. I think there's about 3-4 true solids in that category and then a pretty steep drop-off.
side note - anyone else notice that lordscarlet has triggered multiple runs on categories? |

It's seriously hilarious if you knew how much his list right now does not match his musical tastes. |
I'm heading into work, will post Butter's pick around 9:30 if he hasn't been by.
|
My turn now?

Solid pick. |
Been some great picks.

Also, I'm not sure that I'd label "Fight for your Right" as a rap song... I think I'd categorize it as a rock song. |
Classic -
Epic - Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen, 1.4 Arena - Rock and Roll (Part Two) - Gary Glitter, 3.4 Trendsetter - Love Song - One-Hit Wonder - Party - Crossover - Superstition - Stevie Wonder, 4.7 Cover - Anti-Establishment - Anarchy in the UK - Sex Pistols, 2.7 |
1999 and Fight for Your Right to Party the natural 1-2 in that category...still darkhorses in the mix, however.
Having Prince off the board is tough now because I think Purple Rain would have been a solid choice for Love Song. |

If you count Beastie Boys as rap I'm looking at only 30% rap if I don't pick anymore. :) Second, here's my proof that I am not a rap guy: hxxp://www.last.fm/user/lordscarlet/ Quote:
Yep! |

That's what makes it an even better pick. I've blocked anyone from taking the Beastie Boys as crossover. |
Quote:
Yeah, I could buy that too... |
Ok.. maybe i'm ignorant about music, but...
Superstition is a great song... I don't see how in the world it qualifies as crossover though... it's an R&B/Pop song... Stevie is primarily a R&B/Pop Artist... Right? I mean, he's on Motown Records - but in the end he's an R&B/Pop artist... |
Quote:
ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh |

That's what makes it crossover-worthy, I'd argue. |

Is it possible for a song to switch genres over time? Not sure, but this one seems to. |
NoMyths is on the clock. Lathum is next, and I have his picks.
So Subby, start toking now, you'll be up soon. |
Fight for your Right was definitely considered rap at the time.
edit - at least, by white kids. |
Pick up soon.
|
I have a feeling Lathum has one of my picks... :\
|
So far I have Maple Leafs, Lord Scarlet, and Butter as the clear leaders. Superstition was certainly a great pick for crossover, I think people are really going to have problems with that category as time goes on. I think the key categories are going to be:
Anti-Establishment Party Crossover Trendsetter One-hit wonders I think those that chose Arena or Classics early are going to kick themselves, because there are enough of those songs out there, that they are not good values early. The drop off in the categories above are huge. With regards to one-hit wonders, its not so much that there are not a lot of them, but how many have held up over time, and which ones will people remember fondly? For example, while Macarena was the biggest hit ever, it is dated now, and how will people vote? |
Fight for Your Right also takes Sabotage out of the Crossover category.
|
Stepping out of the Sixties wheelhouse now. I'm happy to be taking this band off the board, and the main reason I'm not taking any of their other hits is because they are either better suited to categories for which there are better choices and because it sits atop my current Arena list, with little else of quality besides it.
Classic - 1.3 - Like a Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan Epic - 3.3 - The End - The Doors Arena - 4.8 - Where the Streets Have No Name - U2 Trendsetter - 2.8 - Respect - Aretha Franklin Love Song - One-Hit Wonder - Party - Crossover - Cover - Anti-Establishment - |
Quote:
I wondered about this with Macarena. I think it could be pretty easily argued that it is the "biggest" one-hit wonder of all time. But I think there's a lot of argument as to the one-hit wonder that has held the test of time the longest. I think this will come down to voter opinion because people could feel either element is more important. I think the only way to dispell Macarena as the top choice here, is to feel stronly that standing up over time is important. |
I'm kind of disappointed that Purple Rain wasn't used.
|
Quote:
Good analysis. I thought Macarena was an interesting pick, but probably not good enough. |
Quote:
And Anti-Establishment? ;) |
Quote:
Yeah, but it was a mainstream hit as well. I really look at the Crossover category as a song that was so good in its genre, that people that didn't listen to that did, and enjoyed it. |
Quote:
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh |
Quote:
Isn't Pop/R&B Mainstream? Maybe i'm living in an alternate universe, but what is more mainstream than pop? |
I really thought somebody would tap U2 for a love song in the first couple of rounds. With or without you, maybe.

Plus, I'm worried people are using "their" definition too much... The definition laid out in the rules - Quote:
I think that several of the picks have come far from fitting that definition. |
