If you read last week’s blog, then you already know the plays for the 4 games in “week zero”. I know that everyone expected me to be beyond hyped for this “week zero” nonsense, but I’m really not. We do know the Vegas lines for 2 of the games and all I got to say is “OMFG does New Mexico suck or what?”
Part of the reason that College Football wagering is easier than most other sports is the sheer volume of games played on a single Saturday. There can be upwards of 50 games on a given Saturday, so some things might slip thru the cracks. With only 4 games to focus on, the action will be very “sharp” which is a Vegas insider term that basically means that the book already knows every little secret on a game.
So with this being the very last week of me killing time on the ole blog before the rush of weekly football games begin, I’m going to just write about a few little tidbits that I’ve learned this pre-season.
• Miami Tight end Cam McCormick will enter this season as a 9 year Senior. Starting at Oregon in 2015, thru a few knee tears, followed by Covid, then a transfer, then more knee injuries. I think that 9 years of eligibility is proof that the NCAA does not really pay attention to its own rules but benefitted a player for once, so that’s pretty cool.
• Arch Manning is going to be the man, eventually. Every dang report that I’ve read pre-season says that he has the arm of Eli and the brains of Peyton. Not sure whose forehead he got, but lookout!
• Frostbite can set in 10 minutes on a cold Wisconsin Saturday night. Just a warning to all of our West Coast friends heading East this season.
• Purdue claims to have the world’s largest drum. Go ahead, ask them.
• While we are talking about the death of the PAC 12, how about the timing of Bill Walton’s passing? Died 2 days after the last official PAC 12 event ever. He was the greatest spokesman for the Grateful Dead, the PAC 12, Big guys dunking, LSD, surfing…pretty much anything.
• Michigan hired a coach from the NFL whose name is Wink Martindale.
• Bobby Petrino is back at Arkansas, this time as OC. I wonder if he still has that sweet motorcycle?
• Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh became the first coach to win a National Championship and then immediately leave for the NFL.
• Blue Mountain State is a great TV show for the college football fan. It’s on Netflix, you should check it out sometime.
• Ollie Gordon II from Oklahoma State is a solid Heisman candidate if he can stay healthy and the Cowboys can stay in the Playoff race.
• NC State’s Kevin Concepcion is a baller at wide out who is only a sophomore and led all NCAA freshman in catches and touchdowns last year.
• Delaware State might not make it to the week zero match with Hawaii. They missed their plane.
• Notre Dame will enter a conference the first time they go 10-2 and do not make the playoffs. So perhaps in 7 months.

LAST WEEKS PICK OF THE WEEK RESULTS – Ok, OK, Ok. I get it. I lost for the first time in the preseason, dropping my record to 6-1. What you won’t see me do is cry over spilled milk. For that you have to be watching the game with me and also see me drinking milk in public. Milk was a bad choice.
PICK OF THE WEEK – This one matters as this is the very 1st College Football pick. For this I’m taking Florida State -12.5 over Georgia Tech. I think that the FSU defense is going to have a field day with the QB having lingering turnover issues. The long trip would, on paper, always favor the deeper squad and that is Florida State. The spread is under 2 touchdowns now, and I would not take it if it does creep above 14. PICK – Florida State -12.5
