Weekly take on a positive and a negative after the Sunday NFL games

Positive

How quickly things can change in the NFL. Last week�s �The Day After� article/blog saw the Dallas Cowboys on the negative side. This week, they are in the positive section. Yesterday the Dallas Cowboys did what they were supposed to be doing from day 1. Get the ball to their play-makers. The results were great for the Cowboys as the stars on offense came through. First Dez Bryant, Dez returned kicks and played WR. He was targeted 5 times by Jon Kitna and ended the game with 104 yards and 1 TD. Clearly this player is a Fantasy stud and will continue to play this way as long as they throw him the ball. The other player the Cowboys have been waiting for is Felix Jones. He responded with 47 yards on the ground and 85 receiving yards which included a screen play that went 71 yards for a TD.

Offensive Coordinator Jason Garrett was clearly prepared for this opportunity. He had an answer for every blitz the Giants threw at his quarterback allowing just one sack.

The Cowboys head back home for week 11 to face the Detroit Lions and if you look at the rest of their schedule they can still make a push in the NFC East if the others falter. As a Fantasy Football fan I just hope the real stars continue to produce as they did against the Giants.

Negative

How sad it is when Fantasy Studs stop producing. The average life span of an NFL player is 3 years. It seems like the average lifespan of a Fantasy Stud is the same or less. Players like Peyton Manning, Larry Fitzgerald, Tony Gonzalez, and Randy Moss were at the top of all Mock Drafts, Fantasy Football Magazines and Fantasy Football websites before the season began. What has transpired is the complete opposite. Yes some are still helping their NFL teams win but they are not helping their Fantasy GM�s win.

That is why it is so important to not just draft stars instead draft for depth and watch the free agent wire. When you have depth you have other players that can pick up the slack when your stars or their teams are in slumps. When you watch the FA Waiver wire you end up with players like Peyton Hillis and Legarrette Blount. Players that no one expected fantasy stud quality production from. Let�s take a look at how these same players were doing after week 10 in the �09 season:

These stats show decreases in two of the major categories in performance based fantasy leagues. Yes, we have to admit that these declines are also due to team play and injuries to wide receivers, offensive linemen and defense�s. But you also have to admit that if we do a full scan through the league you will find the same fantasy decline in other players that were rated very high in all Fantasy Football media.

I guess it is safe to say that the NFL average of 3 years is very close to the fantasy football average for a player�s league life span�
