F1 2010: Sim vs. Arcade
Posted on October 27, 2010 at 05:24 PM.

I’ve been buying racing games for years. When Codemasters announced their plans to release a Formula One game, I was sold. The quality and fun of the Colin McRae series made me optimistic. Buying DiRT and trading it in relatively quickly, then skipping over GRID altogether made me unsure of how this new F1 game would turn out. Upon release of F1 2010, the signals have been mixed. The reviews were favorable, a number of them were raves. Once the public got their hands on the game, there were cries about bugs. A patch for this game is on the way. Codemasters showed good faith by facing the criticism and attempting to fix the issues. This was enough reason for me to buy the game yesterday.

It is too early to dismiss the game. After a couple of sessions many ****** gamers would find this to be a tough game. Codemasters have probably met the demands of hardcore fans by attempting to approach realism. I am one of the crowd who wants sports games to be more sim than arcade. In the case of F1 2010, the learning curve may be so steep, the game so precise and unforgiving, that it may be inaccessible to the masses. This goes beyond the arguments that you need a good racing wheel and racing games are too hard with just a stock controller. You can mention Geoff Crammond’s games, TOCA, the rebooted Need For Speed series, Forza Motorsports, or Gran Turismo all you want. F1 2010 is tough.

This difficulty made me consider the possibility that the game may have a greater replay value. It may be more satisfying if you can conquer it, and work your way up the standings. Is this the game that merits the $60 retail price? Or does it stop being a game, and more of a chore?
